The effect of environmental conditions on distribution,growth and life span of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Protothaca euglypta</Emphasis> (Mollusca: Bivalvia)

The distribution and growth of the bivalve mollusk Protothaca euglypta in Peter the Great Bay and at the northern boundary of its area were investigated. It is shown that in some biotopes P. euglypta biomass reaches 1–2 kg/m², which exceeds the estimated values of abundance obtained for most associated species of mollusks. It has been established that local variability of P. euglypta growth rates can be compared with latitudinal variability, and the life span increases from the southern part of the area towards its northern boundary. It has been concluded that P. euglypta occupies a more prominent position in the malacofauna of shallow waters in its abundance, than it was considered earlier.

Dynamics of byssal thread production in <Emphasis Type="Italic">Crenomytilus grayanus</Emphasis> and <Emphasis Type="Italic">Modiolus modiolus</Emphasis> (Bivalvia) upon reattachment to substrate

It was established that the process of repeated attachment to a substrate in bivalve mollusks Crenomytilus grayanus (Grays mussel) and Modiolus modiolus (the northern horse mussel) involved several successive stages which took in vitro about one month at a water temperature of 19 ± 2°C. Comparison with Grays mussel revealed that the northern horse mussel had a higher rate of byssal thread production and a greater thread number by the end of the complete formation of the byssus complex. Analytical characterization of cytochrome oxidase preparations with regard to metal and phospholipid contents, peptide composition and catalytic activity

A number of preparations of cytochrome oxidase have been analyzed for metals by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The EPR characteristics, the peptide compositions, the protein and phospholipid contents as well as the catalytic constants of the samples have also been determined. It is confirmed that the enzyme functional unit contains three copper atoms and one zinc atom in addition to two iron atoms. On the basis of the parameters determined for the different samples it is suggested that a high catalytic activity of a preparation can be correlated to a number of other analytical characteristics.     

Influence of the Conductivity of the Discharge Liquid on the Microbicidal Effect of Transient Electric Arcs in Aqueous Systems

The microbicidal effect of electrical discharges on microorganisms suspended in the discharge liquid was reduced when the liquid contained high concentrations of inorganic salts (conductivity k >/= 5 mmho/cm). A higher discharge voltage and a smaller distance between the submerged electrodes counteracted this reduction. The decrease in the microbicidal effect was accompanied by a change in the electrical current and by a decreased yield of microbicidal photons from the electric discharge.
