Plant Management in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, Mexico. Plant management types currently practiced in the Tehuacán-Cuicatlán Valley, México, were documented and analyzed based on ethnobotanical studies conducted in 13 villages with six indigenous groups and Mestizo people. The information was organized in a data base, and then detailed and guided to a consensus through six workshops carried out by ethnobotanists working in the area. From a total of 1,608 useful plant species, we identified 610 with at least one management type other than simple gathering. Managed species are mainly used as food, fodder, medicinal, and ornamental, and they belong to 101 plant families. The higher species numbers were recorded in Cactaceae, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Crassulaceae, and Agavaceae. Nearly 60% of the managed species are native to the region and the rest are introduced from other regions of Mexico and the world. In total, 400 species are ex situ managed out of their natural environments through seed sowing and/or planting their vegetative propagules or entire young plants; 373 species are in situ managed in their natural habitats as follows: all these species are deliberately left standing during vegetation clearance, 76 species are also enhanced intentionally favoring their abundance through modifications of their habitat, or directly by planting their propagules, and 51 receive protection through regulations, particular strategies of extraction, and actions against herbivores, competitors, freezing, radiation, and drought. Most management forms involve artificial selection at different intensity levels. The information allows visualizing co-occurrence of incipient and advanced forms of management at different intensity levels within and among species, which helps to postulate testable hypotheses on factors influencing plant management and domestication in an important area for studying the origins of agriculture.  相似文献

Background  

Candida parapsilosis is known to show limited genetic variability, despite different karyotypes and phenotypes have been described. To further investigate this aspect, a collection of 62 sensu strictu C. parapsilosis independent isolates from 4 geographic regions (Italy, n = 19; New Zealand, n = 15; Argentina, n = 14; and Hungary, n = 14) and different body sites (superficial and deep seated) were analysed for their genetic and phenotypic traits. Amplification fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis was used to confirm species identification and to evaluate intraspecific genetic variability. Phenotypic characterisation included clinically relevant traits, such as drug susceptibility, in vitro biofilm formation and aspartyl protease secretion.  相似文献

Mass spectrometry-based approaches are commonly used to identify proteins from multiprotein complexes, typically with the goal of identifying new complex members or identifying post-translational modifications. However, with the recent demonstration that spectral counting is a powerful quantitative proteomic approach, the analysis of multiprotein complexes by mass spectrometry can be reconsidered in certain cases. Using the chromatography-based approach named multidimensional protein identification technology, multiprotein complexes may be analyzed quantitatively using the normalized spectral abundance factor that allows comparison of multiple independent analyses of samples. This study describes an approach to visualize multiprotein complex datasets that provides structure function information that is superior to tabular lists of data. In this method review, we describe a reanalysis of the Rpd3/Sin3 small and large histone deacetylase complexes previously described in a tabular form to demonstrate the normalized spectral abundance factor approach.  相似文献

There are many aspects of “mothering” that may provide information to the mammalian infant about environmental conditions during critical periods of development. One essential element of mothering involves the quantity and quality of milk that mothers provide for their infants, but little is known about the consequences of variation in milk production. Mother's milk may affect infant behavior by contributing to brain development and to the development of behavioral dispositions. Here we present the first evidence for any mammal that natural variation in available milk energy (AME) from the mother is associated with later variation in infant behavior and temperament in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta, N=59). In the early postnatal period, heavier mothers with more reproductive experience produced greater AME, which is the product of milk energy density (kcal/g) and milk yield (g). Moreover, infants whose mothers produced greater AME in the early postnatal period showed higher activity levels and greater confidence in a stressful setting later in infancy. Our results suggest that the milk energy available soon after birth may be a nutritional cue that calibrates the infant's behavior to environmental or maternal conditions. These data provide new insight into potential mechanisms for the development of behavior and temperament and illuminate new directions for investigating maternal effects, nutritional programming, and developmental plasticity. A study is presented of the effect of chemical modification of lysine amino groups on the redox and protonmotive activity of bovine heart cytochrome c oxidase. Treatment of soluble oxidase with succinic acid anhydride resulted in succinylation of lysines in all the subunits of the enzyme. The consequent change of surface charges from positive to negative resulted in inversion of the orientation of the reconstituted enzyme from right-side-out to inside-out. Reconstitution of the oxidase in phospholipid vesicles prevented succinylation of subunits III and Vb and depressed that of other subunits with the exception of subunits II and IV which were predominantly labeled in a concentration-dependent manner by succinic acid anhydride. This modification of lysines produced a decoupling effect on redox-linked proton ejection, which was associated with a decrease of the respiratory control exerted by the delta pH component of PMF. The decoupling effect was directly shown to be exerted at the level of the pH-dependent rate-limiting step in intramolecular electron flow located on the oxygen side of heme a.  相似文献

High-performance liquid chromatography and radioimmunoassay were used to identify the prostaglandins synthesized by mouse embryo palate mesenchyme cells. Serum stimulated the release of several different metabolites of arachidonic acid including 6-ketoprostaglandin F1 alpha (the stable product of prostacyclin, prostaglandin I2), prostaglandin E2 and prostaglandin F2 alpha. Compared to control cells, the serum-stimulated cells produce elevated levels of prostaglandin E2 (36-fold), 6-ketoprostaglandin F1 alpha (15-fold) and prostaglandin F2 alpha (7-fold). The acetylenic analogue of arachidonic acid, 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraynoic acid prevented this accelerated synthesis.  相似文献
