The Alborz Mountains, the second largest range in Iran, is, on its southern slopes, mainly covered by steppe vegetation. These dry slopes also include ‘green islands’ of wetland. Floristic diversity and environmental characteristics of 45 of these little-studied wetland sites have been assessed along an altitudinal gradient using one-way ANOVA, Pearson r and detrended correspondence analysis/canonical correspondence analysis (DCA/CCA) analyses. The wetlands proved to be of conservation importance with 310 plant taxa, including 35 endemics or subendemics. Predictably, and consistent with the phytosociological classification of Klein [2001. La végétation altitudinale de L’Alborz Central (Iran): Entre les régions Irano-Touranienne et Euro-sibérienne. Institut Français de Recherche en Iran, Téhéran], there were parallel changes in vegetation both within wetlands and the surrounding steppes and in DCA/CCA analyses altitude appeared to be the primary determinant of floristic composition. Upper mountain wetlands are particularly species-rich and contain many endemics and other species of a narrow phytogeographical distribution. Soil pH declined with altitude, perhaps in part as a consequence of low salinity (and high pH) in the mountains. Consistent with the work of Raunkiaer [1934. The life forms of plants and statistical plant geography. Clarendon Press, Oxford], hemicryptophytes are mainly restricted to upper mountain areas. Though correlated both directly with altitude and with correlation in DCA/CCA plots, phytogeography, life-form and soil pH fail to adequately explain the ecological processes that maintain the altitudinal gradient in vegetation types and species composition. Further studies on site productivity, soil chemistry and climate-related variables are, therefore, on-going in an attempt to understand more fully the ecosystem processes maintaining the diversity of these important wetland sites.  相似文献

Beach Ridges Interspersed with Swales (BRIS) is a sandy soil and in Malaysia it is found exclusively in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is a marginal soil because of its low nutrient and water-holding capacity. However, with proper management and organic matter amendments some areas with BRIS soil are cultivated. Napropamide is a selective herbicide widely used to control weeds in BRIS soil. No previous studies have been reported on the effects of organic matter amendments on napropamide sorption in BRIS soil. This study was conducted to determine sorption and desorption of napropamide in BRIS soil amended with chicken dung (CD) and palm oil mill effluent (POME) at 0, 20, 40, and 80 Mg ha?1. Potential interaction of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) with napropamide and their competition for sorption sites were also determined. Sorption isotherm data were fitted to the log-transformed Freundlich's equation. Sorption of napropamide was higher in soils amended with CD and POME as compared to non-amended soil. At the same rates of application, sorption was higher in soil amended with CD than POME. The Freundlich's coefficient (Kf) values were 0.22, 3.96, and 41.6 for nonamended soil, soil amended with 80 Mg ha?1 POME, and soil amended with 80 Mg ha?1 CD, respectively. Desorption of napropamide showed positive hysteresis and the hysteresis were greater with higher rates of CD and POME. There was no association between napropamide and DOC extracted from BRIS soil amended with either CD or POME and also there were no competitions between napropamide and DOC extracted from either CD or POME for sorption sites of the soil samples.  相似文献

As sessile organisms, plants have to cope with diverse environmental constraints that may vary through time and space, eventually leading to changes in the phenotype of populations through fixation of adaptive genetic variation. To fully comprehend the mechanisms of evolution and make sense of the extensive genotypic diversity currently revealed by new sequencing technologies, we are challenged with identifying the molecular basis of such adaptive variation. Here, we have identified a new variant of a molybdenum (Mo) transporter, MOT1, which is causal for fitness changes under artificial conditions of both Mo-deficiency and Mo-toxicity and in which allelic variation among West-Asian populations is strictly correlated with the concentration of available Mo in native soils. In addition, this association is accompanied at different scales with patterns of polymorphisms that are not consistent with neutral evolution and show signs of diversifying selection. Resolving such a case of allelic heterogeneity helps explain species-wide phenotypic variation for Mo homeostasis and potentially reveals trade-off effects, a finding still rarely linked to fitness.  相似文献

In High Performance Liquid Chromatographic (HPLC) determination of chemicals with acidic functions, different labeling agents are used to improve sensitivity of the assay. 9-Fluorenylmethyl chloroformate (FMOC-Cl), on the other hand, is a suitable labeling agent, which reacts with both primary and secondary amines and less readily with hydroxyl groups in alkaline conditions. However, the reagent has not been applied in labeling of chemicals with acidic function yet. In this study which is the first report on application of FMOC-Cl in derivatization and analysis of a drug with acidic function, valproic acid (VPA), one of a series of fatty carboxylic acids with anticonvulsant activity, was derivatized using the reagent and quantified in serum samples by HPLC with fluorescence detection. In addition, to document the reaction between the labeling agent and carboxylic acid moiety of the drug, we developed a liquid chromatography-tandem MS/MS (LC-MS/MS) method. Following liquid-liquid extraction, derivatization of the drug and an internal standard was achieved in alkaline medium. The elute was monitored by a fluorescence detector with respective excitation and emission wavelengths of 265 and 315 nm. The present method is more sensitive comparing with other published HPLC procedures for analysis of VPA. The assay is sensitive enough to measure drug levels obtained in human single dose studies with a limit of quantification of 0.01 μg/mL. Also the method is linear over the concentrations range of 0.01-32 μg/mL of VPA in human serum using 100 μL serum sample and 5 μL injection. The coefficient variation values of both inter and intra day analysis were less than 12% and the percentage error was less than 4%. The method performance was studied and the validated procedure applied in a randomized cross-over bioequivalence study of two different VPA preparations in 24 healthy volunteers.  相似文献

Microalgae play an important role during the tertiary treatment of municipal wastewater. Cell immobilization techniques have been developed in order to improve the quality of the treated wastewater and avoid wash out of the biomass. Since cell immobilization method may affect the nutrient removal efficiency, ten strains of microalgae were immobilized in sodium alginate gel in different-diameter circular screens, and orthophosphate removal efficiency from municipal wastewater was studied. Results indicate that the alginate immobilization screen size and contact surface with wastewater affects the microalgae synthesis activity and thus orthophosphate removal efficiency. Increasing the contact surface by making smaller alginate screens will increase the cation exchange rate and reduce the orthophosphate concentration in the medium. Among all microalgae treatments, Scenedesmus rubescens MCCS 018, Chlamydomonas sp. MCCS 026, and Chroococcus dispersus MCCS 006 had the highest PO 4 3- -P removal efficiency of 68.8%, 71.9%, and 72.3% within 12?days.  相似文献

Background:Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a calcium homeostasis regulator and can affect bone marrow niche. PTH leads to the bone marrow stem cell niche expansion as well as the induction of stem cell mobilization from the bone marrow into peripheral blood. In this study, we evaluated the association between pre- transplantation serum PTH levels and the number of circulating CD34+ cells along with the platelets/white blood cells (Plt/WBC) engraftment in patients who underwent autologous Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.Methods:Subjects for the study were 100 patients who received autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (auto-HSCT), retrospectively. Serum levels of PTH, calcium, phosphorus, and alkaline phosphatase were measured before mobilization. Their impacts were measured on the number of mobilized CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells, and Plt/WBC engraftment.Results:High levels of serum PTH (> 63.10 pg/mL) was significantly associated with higher number of CD34+ cells in peripheral blood after granulocyte- colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-induced mobilization (p= 0.079*). Serum calcium at low levels were associated with higher number of circulating CD34+ cells post mobilization. Pre- transplantation serum levels of phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase on CD34+ numbers were not statistically significant. Serum Plt/WBC engraftment was not improved in presence of high levels of serum PTH.Conclusion:We suggested that serum PTH levels before transplantation could be influential in raising the number of circulating CD34+ hematopoietic stem cell after mobilization.Key Words: Auto-HSCT, CD34+ Cell, Pre- transplant PTH  相似文献

We hypothesized that oxidative stress may contribute to the development of hypertrophy observed in mice with cardiac specific ablation of the insulin sensitive glucose transporter 4 gene (GLUT4, G4H(-/-) ). Measurements of oxidized glutathione (GSSG) in isolated mitochondria and whole heart homogenates were increased resulting in a lower ratio of reduced glutathione (GSH) to GSSG. Membrane translocation of the p67(phox) subunit of cardiac NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) was markedly increased in G4H(-/-) mice, suggesting elevated activity. To determine if oxidative stress was contributing to cardiac hypertrophy, 4-week-old control (Con) and G4H(-/-) mice were treated with either tempol (T, 1 mm, drinking water), a whole cell antioxidant, or Mn(III) tetrakis (4-benzoic acid) porphyrin chloride (MnTBAP, 10 mg·kg(-1) , intraperitoneally), a mitochondrial targeted antioxidant, for 28 days. Tempol attenuated cardiac hypertrophy in G4H(-/-) mice (heart : tibia, Con 6.82 ± 0.35, G4H(-/-) 8.83 ± 0.34, Con + T 6.82 ± 0.46, G4H(-/-) + T 7.57 ± 0.3), without changing GSH : GSSG, glutathione peroxidase 4 or membrane translocation of the p67(phox) . Tempol did not modify phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase 3β or thioredoxin-2. In contrast, MnTBAP lowered mitochondrial GSSG and improved GSH : GSSG, but did not prevent hypertrophy, indicating that mitochondrial oxidative stress may not be critical for hypertrophy in this model. The ability of tempol to attenuate cardiac hypertrophy suggests that a cytosolic source of reactive oxygen species, probably NOX2, may contribute to the hypertrophic phenotype in G4H(-/-) mice.  相似文献
