Distribution ranges of plant species are related to physical variables of ecosystems that limit plant growth. Therefore, each plant species response to physical factors builds up the functional diversity of an ecosystem. The higher the species richness of an ecosystem, the larger the probability of maintaining functions and the higher the potential number of plant functional groups (FGs). Thus, the richness potentially increases the number of functions of the highly diverse Atlantic Rainforest domain in Brazil. Severe plant growth limitations caused by stress, however, decrease species richness. In the Spodosols of the Mussununga, an associated ecosystem of Atlantic Rainforest, the percentage of fine sand is directly related to water retention. Moreover, the depth of the cementation layer in the Mussununga??s sandy soil is a physical factor that can affect the plants?? stress gradients. When a shallow cementation layer depth is combined with low water retention in soils and with low fine sand percentage, the double stresses of flooding in the rainy season and water scarcity in the dry season result. This study aimed to identify FGs among Mussununga plant species responding to water stress gradients of soil and to verify the effects of the gradients on plant species richness of the Mussununga. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of species abundance and soil texture variables was performed on 18 plots in six physiognomies of the Mussununga. Species richness rarefactions were calculated for each vegetation form to compare diversity. The two main axes of the CCA showed two FGs responding to soil texture and cementation layer depth: stress tolerator species and mesic species. Physical variables affect plant diversity, with species richness rising as the fine sand proportion also rises in the Mussununga. The effect of the cementation layer is not significantly related to species richness variation. 相似文献

Histidine‐rich, unstructured peptides adsorb to charged interfaces such as mineral surfaces and microbial cell membranes. At a molecular level, we investigate the adsorption mechanism as a function of pH, salt, and multivalent ions showing that (1) proton charge fluctuations are—in contrast to the majority of proteins—optimal at neutral pH, promoting electrostatic interactions with anionic surfaces through charge regulation and (2) specific zinc(II)‐histidine binding competes with protons and ensures an unusually constant charge distribution over a broad pH interval. In turn, this further enhances surface adsorption. Our analysis is based on atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, coarse grained Metropolis Monte Carlo, and classical polymer density functional theory. This multiscale modeling provides a consistent picture in good agreement with experimental data on Histatin 5, an antimicrobial salivary peptide. Biological function is discussed and we suggest that charge regulation is a significant driving force for the remarkably robust activity of histidine‐rich antimicrobial peptides. Throughout the Amazon region, the age of forests regenerating on previously deforested land is determined, in part, by the periods of active land use prior to abandonment and the frequency of reclearance of regrowth, both of which can be quantified by comparing time-series of Landsat sensor data. Using these time-series of near annual data from 1973–2011 for an area north of Manaus (in Amazonas state), from 1984–2010 for south of Santarém (Pará state) and 1984–2011 near Machadinho d’Oeste (Rondônia state), the changes in the area of primary forest, non-forest and secondary forest were documented from which the age of regenerating forests, periods of active land use and the frequency of forest reclearance were derived. At Manaus, and at the end of the time-series, over 50% of regenerating forests were older than 16 years, whilst at Santarém and Machadinho d’Oeste, 57% and 41% of forests respectively were aged 6–15 years, with the remainder being mostly younger forests. These differences were attributed to the time since deforestation commenced but also the greater frequencies of reclearance of forests at the latter two sites with short periods of use in the intervening periods. The majority of clearance for agriculture was also found outside of protected areas. The study suggested that a) the history of clearance and land use should be taken into account when protecting deforested land for the purpose of restoring both tree species diversity and biomass through natural regeneration and b) a greater proportion of the forested landscape should be placed under protection, including areas of regrowth. 相似文献

The effects of high doses of dietary or intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected retinol acetate on the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.) innate immune system were studied. Gilthead seabream specimens were fed a commercial non-supplemented diet containing 1.75 mg of vitamin A kg(-1) (as control) or the same diet supplemented with 50, 150 or 300 mg of retinol acetate kg(-1) (as vitamin A source). After 1, 2, 4 or 6 weeks, serum samples and head-kidney leucocytes were obtained from each fish. Serum lysozyme activity and myeloperoxidase (MPO) content were unaffected by the vitamin A diet content. The phagocytic and respiratory burst activities of head-kidney leucocytes were established, as well as their myeloperoxidase content. While phagocytosis was not enhanced by dietary vitamin A intake and was even slightly decreased after 2 weeks, respiratory burst activity was enhanced in specimens fed supplements of 150 and 300 mg retinol acetate kg(-1) diet for 1 or 2 weeks. Leucocyte MPO content was also enhanced when seabream were fed the highest vitamin A dose for 2 or 4 weeks and after being fed the 150 or 50 mg supplemented diets for 4 or 6 weeks, respectively. Three different groups of seabream were i.p. injected with 1 ml of phosphate buffer containing an amount of retinol acetate equivalent to the daily dietary supplements from the first experiment (0-control-, 0.05 or 0.30 mg 100 g(-1) biomass). Both injection doses of retinol acetate were toxic for the gilthead seabream which showed hypervitaminic effects. These data show that retinol acetate plays an important role in the gilthead seabream nonspecific cellular immune system due to its antioxidant properties. They also point to the importance of the way in which it is administered, by dietary uptake or intraperitoneal injection. 相似文献

In this work, we present a computational investigation on the reactions between two well-known antioxidants (quercetin and morin) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH). A density functional theory (DFT) approach with the B3LYP functional and the 6-31G(d,p) basis set was used for the simulations. The structural and energetic parameters (Gibbs free-energy, ΔG, and Gibbs free-energy of activation, ΔG++) were determined to provide information on the antioxidant activity as well as to evaluate the contributions of each hydroxyl group to the referred property. According to the results obtained, quercetin presented three hydroxyls as being thermodynamically spontaneous in the reaction with DPPH (4\(^{\prime }\)-ArOH, 3\(^{\prime }\)-ArOH, and 3-ArOH, with ΔG = -4.93 kcal/mol, -2.89 kcal/mol, and -1.87 kcal/mol, respectively) against only two in the case of morin (2\(^{\prime }\)-ArOH and 3-ArOH, with ΔG = -7.56 kcal/mol and -4.57 kcal/mol, respectively). Hence, quercetin was found to be a more efficient antioxidant, which is in agreement with different experimental and computational investigations of bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs). However, the order of contribution of the OH groups of each compound to the antioxidant potential present some differences when compared to what was seen in the previous investigations, especially for morin. These findings are in contrast to what was observed in studies based on the determinations of BDEs. Therefore, experimental investigations on the hydrogen-atom transfer mechanism (HAT) for both compounds are encouraged in order to clarify these observations. 相似文献

Amphibian populations are decreasing worldwide due to a variety of factors. In South America, the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is linked to many population declines. The pathogenic effect of Bd on amphibians can be inhibited by specific bacteria present on host skin. This symbiotic association allows some amphibians to resist the development of the disease chytridiomycosis. Here, we aimed (1) to determine for the first time if specific anti-Bd bacteria are present on amphibians in the Andes of Ecuador, (2) to monitor anti-Bd bacteria across developmental stages in a focal amphibian, the Andean marsupial tree frog, Gastrotheca riobambae, that deposits larvae in aquatic habitats, and (3) to compare the Bd presence associated with host assemblages including 10 species at sites ranging in biogeography from Amazonian rainforest (450 masl) to Andes montane rainforest (3200 masl). We sampled and identified skin-associated bacteria of frogs in the field using swabs and a novel methodology of aerobic counting plates, and a combination of morphological, biochemical, and molecular identification techniques. The following anti-Bd bacteria were identified and found to be shared among several hosts at high-elevation sites where Bd was present at a prevalence of 32.5%: Janthinobacterium lividum, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Serratia sp. Bd were detected in Gastrotheca spp. and not detected in the lowlands (sites below 1000 masl). In G. riobambae, recognized Bd-resistant bacteria start to be present at the metamorphic stage. Overall bacterial abundance was significantly higher post-metamorphosis and on species sampled at lower elevations. Further metagenomic studies are needed to evaluate the roles of host identity, life-history stage, and biogeography of the microbiota and their function in disease resistance. 相似文献

Strategies to minimize dengue transmission commonly rely on vector control, which aims to maintain Ae. aegypti density below a theoretical threshold. Mosquito abundance is traditionally estimated from mark-release-recapture (MRR) experiments, which lack proper analysis regarding accurate vector spatial distribution and population density. Recently proposed strategies to control vector-borne diseases involve replacing the susceptible wild population by genetically modified individuals’ refractory to the infection by the pathogen. Accurate measurements of mosquito abundance in time and space are required to optimize the success of such interventions. In this paper, we present a hierarchical probabilistic model for the estimation of population abundance and spatial distribution from typical mosquito MRR experiments, with direct application to the planning of these new control strategies. We perform a Bayesian analysis using the model and data from two MRR experiments performed in a neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during both low- and high-dengue transmission seasons. The hierarchical model indicates that mosquito spatial distribution is clustered during the winter (0.99 mosquitoes/premise 95% CI: 0.80–1.23) and more homogeneous during the high abundance period (5.2 mosquitoes/premise 95% CI: 4.3–5.9). The hierarchical model also performed better than the commonly used Fisher-Ford’s method, when using simulated data. The proposed model provides a formal treatment of the sources of uncertainty associated with the estimation of mosquito abundance imposed by the sampling design. Our approach is useful in strategies such as population suppression or the displacement of wild vector populations by refractory Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, since the invasion dynamics have been shown to follow threshold conditions dictated by mosquito abundance. The presence of spatially distributed abundance hotspots is also formally addressed under this modeling framework and its knowledge deemed crucial to predict the fate of transmission control strategies based on the replacement of vector populations. 相似文献
