Under temperature sex determination (TSD), sex is determined by temperature during embryonic development. Depending on ecological and physiological traits and plasticity, TSD species may face demographic collapse due to climate change. In this context, asymmetry in bilateral organisms can be used as a proxy for developmental instability and, therefore, deviations from optimal incubation conditions. Using Tarentola mauritanica gecko as a model, this study aimed first to confirm TSD, its pattern and pivotal temperature, and second to assess the local adaptation of TSD and variation of asymmetry patterns across four populations under different thermal regimes. Eggs were incubated at different temperatures, and hatchlings were sexed and measured. The number of lamellae was counted in adults and hatchlings. Results were compatible with a TSD pattern with males generated at low and females at high incubation temperatures. Estimated pivotal temperature coincided with the temperature producing lower embryonic mortality, evidencing selection towards balanced sex ratios. The temperature of oviposition was conservatively selected by gravid females. Asymmetry patterns found were likely related to nest temperature fluctuations. Overall, the rigidity of TSD may compromise reproductive success, and demographic stability in this species in case thermal nest choice becomes constrained by climate change. 相似文献

Tropical montane communities host the world's highest beta diversity of birds, a phenomenon usually attributed to community turnover caused by changes in biotic and abiotic factors along elevation gradients. Yet, empirical data on most biotic factors are lacking. Nest predation is thought to be especially important because it appears to be common and can change selective pressures underlying life history traits, which can alter competitive interactions. We monitored 2538 nests, 338 of which had known nest predators, to evaluate if nest predation changes along a tropical elevational gradient. We found that nest predation decreased with elevation, reflecting the loss of lowland predators that do not tolerate colder climates. We found different “super” nest predators at each elevation that accounted for a high percentage of events, suggesting that selection pressures exerted by nest predator communities may be less diffuse than has been hypothesized, at least for birds nesting in the understory. 相似文献

By reducing the concentration of nitrogen (from 5.0 to 2.5 mmol 1-1 ), batch cultures of Xanthomonas campestris induced the enzyme UDP-glucose dehydrogenase and stimulated the Entner-Doudoroff pathway enzyme glucose-6-P dehydrogenase. The surplus energy generation was directed to xanthan biosynthesis resulting in a 10% polysaccharide increase. The nitrogen restriction led to a higher consumption of nitrogen (93%) whereas glucose consumption did not surpass 75% utilization. Low concentrations of both magnesium and sulphur exerted a negative effect on xanthan formation. Both restrictions reduced the phosphomannose isomerase enzyme activity by 10-fold turning the mannose transference presumably into the rate-limiting step for xanthan biosynthesis. Conversely, the rate of synthesis of glucuronic acid residues did not affect the rate of xanthan biosynthesis. Polysaccharide synthesis in magnesium and sulphur cultures was negatively affected in comparison with cell formation as the cell volumetric production rate increased from 0.037 to 0.091 g 1-1 h-1 and the xanthan volumetric production rate dropped from 0.133 g 1-1 h-1 to the minimum obtained at 0.083 g 1-1 h-1 . Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) is a vector for serious diseases in tropical regions. This pest is mainly controlled by commercial larvicides but the application of such products has led to environmental problems. Essential oils (EO) have been consistently reported as molecules with insecticidal activity and can be used to produce more environmentally friendly larvicides in the control of A. aegypti. In this study, the larvicidal effect of essential oils (EO) from the leaves of three Artemisia species was evaluated against A. aegypti. The oils were obtained from steam distillation and their chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The EO of Artemisia camphorata was the most active in the screening bioassay and presented LC50 and LC95 of 64.95 and 74.18 μg ml−1, respectively. In addition, we found that germacrene D-4-ol was the constituent responsible for the toxicity of this EO. Artemisia camphorata EO and its major constituent, germacrene D-4-ol, are promising for the development of natural larvicides against A. aegypti. 相似文献

Summary Explants of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill cv. Ailsa Craig) were co-cultivated with Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58C1Rifr::pGSFR1161 in the presence of 20 (M acetosyringone). Transformed root clones were selected on kanamycin medium and the presence of the nptII gene in the plant DNA confirmed by the polymerase chain reaction. Root clones derived from acetosyringone treatment grew more vigorously in the presence of kanamycin and synthesized a greater amount of NPT-II enzyme. The conclusion is that acetosyringone treatment enhances the transformation process, possibly by stimulating multiple insertions of the T-DNA into the host genome.Abbreviations AS

Gulls, as largely flexible opportunistic individuals, have been increasingly breeding in many cities around the world, but it is still unclear whether urban habitats are of equal or higher quality than traditional natural habitats or represent an ecological trap with immediate reproductive benefits but longer-term detrimental consequences to health. Here we present a study of breeding parameters (nest density, egg dimensions, clutch size, hatching success and adult body condition) and physiological parameters (erythrocyte sedimentation rate, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, haemoglobin concentration and measurements of oxidative stress) as indicators of the general health condition of Yellow-legged Gull Larus michahellis adults and chicks from natural and urban colonies. Yellow-legged Gulls in the largest urban area (Porto) laid smaller eggs and clutches, showed a significantly lower occurrence of inflammatory processes in chicks, and showed a slower early chick growth than in the natural colony of Deserta. This suggests that urban gulls might be facing important trade-offs between the advantages of breeding in lower density urban colonies, with fewer intraspecific interactions and a lower disease transmission probability, and the disadvantages of having an anthropogenic diet usually lower in nutritional value. 相似文献
