A recent investigation of the influence of periodic inhibitory trains on a crayfish pacemaker neuron showed not only well-known locked periodic responses but also intermittent, messy, and hopping responses. This communication studies the responses of the Bonhoeffer-van der Pol (BVP) model with self-sustained oscillation when exposed to periodic pulse trains inputs. The analysis is similar to that used in crayfish and reveals interesting features, both comparable and complementary to those seen in the living preparation.Supported by Trent H. A recent15N dilution/N balance study confirmed that certain sugar cane varieties are capable of obtaining large contributions of nitrogen from plant-associated N2 fixation. It was estimated that up to 60 to 80% of plant N could be derived from this source, and under good conditions of water and mineral nutrient supply, it may be possible to dispense with N fertilization of these varieties altogether. The recently discovered bacterium,Acetobacter diazotrophicus, apparently responsible for this N2 fixation associated with the plants, has unique physiological properties for a diazotroph, such as tolerance to low pH, and high sugar and salt concentrations, lack of nitrate reductase, and nitrogenase activity which tolerates short-term exposure to ammonium. Furthermore, it also behaves as an endophyte, in that it is unable to infect sugar cane plants unless through damaged tissue or by means of VA mycorrhizae and is propagated via the planting material (stem pieces).  相似文献

Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCFs) harbour high levels of biodiversity and large carbon stocks. Their location at high elevations make them especially sensitive to climate change, because a warming climate is enhancing upslope species migration, but human disturbance (especially fire) may in many cases be pushing the treeline downslope. TMCFs are increasingly being affected by fire, and the long‐term effects of fire are still unknown. Here, we present a 28‐year chronosequence to assess the effects of fire and recovery pathways of burned TMCFs, with a detailed analysis of carbon stocks, forest structure and diversity. We assessed rates of change of carbon (C) stock pools, forest structure and tree‐size distribution pathways and tested several hypotheses regarding metabolic scaling theory (MST), C recovery and biodiversity. We found four different C stock recovery pathways depending on the selected C pool and time since last fire, with a recovery of total C stocks but not of aboveground C stocks. In terms of forest structure, there was an increase in the number of small stems in the burned forests up to 5–9 years after fire because of regeneration patterns, but no differences on larger trees between burned and unburned plots in the long term. In support of MST, after fire, forest structure appears to approximate steady‐state size distribution in less than 30 years. However, our results also provide new evidence that the species recovery of TMCF after fire is idiosyncratic and follows multiple pathways. While fire increased species richness, it also enhanced species dissimilarity with geographical distance. This is the first study to report a long‐term chronosequence of recovery pathways to fire suggesting faster recovery rates than previously reported, but at the expense of biodiversity and aboveground C stocks.  相似文献

This communication compares the well known phenomenon of respiratory driving by the respiratory pump through the Breuer Hering reflex with a model (Segundo, 1979) of a neuronal pacemaker (i.e. regularly firing) interactions via IPSP's. The assumption involves a linear dependence (“delay function”) of the postsynaptic interval lengthening (or “delay”) produced by the IPSP's on the position (or “phase”) with respect to the preceding spike of the latter's arrival. Cats anesthetized and paralized with gallamine were artificially ventilated using a computer driven respirator. The pump period and the respiratory period (identified by the phrenic discharge) corresponded to the model's presynaptic pacemaker interval and to that of the post synaptic one, respectively. The delay of the respiratory period by an inflation was related linearly and in increasing manner to the latter's phase with respect to the inspiration onset. In the steady state, plots of average respiratory period versus pump period consisted in a succession of broad “paradoxical” segments with positive slopes 3, 2, 1, 1/2, 1/3 in which respiration was locked with the pump as predicted by the model. The locked condition were less easy to reach when FA CO 2increased or when level of anaesthesia decreased. The limits of paradoxical segments were different when measured using pump periods that increased or using periods that decreased. There was therefore a hysteresis as if the delay function parameters changed, a behavior that was not part of the model that assumed fixed characteristics. These modifications were related to dependency of each cycle on the preceding one. The model proposed for simple neuronal pacemaker interactions can thus be applied satisfactorily to the drive of the complex respiratory neuronal oscillator by the respiratory pump through Breuer Hering reflex, providing nevertheless some additonal assumptions concerning respiratory cycle interdependency are introduced to account for the hysteresis phenomenon. The Breuer Hering reflex could be considered as the equivalent of IPSP acting on the central respiratory oscillator. FA CO 2increase and anesthesia level decrease produced the same effect as the addition of noise to the model's presynaptic pacemaker, thus leading to the hypothesis that they act by adding noise (e.g., randomly distributed excitatory input) at the level of Breuer Hering reflex inhibition.  相似文献

Organ dysfunction is a major concern in sepsis pathophysiology and contributes to its high mortality rate. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) have been implicated in endothelial damage and take part in the pathogenesis of organ dysfunction in several conditions. NETs also have an important role in counteracting invading microorganisms during infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate systemic NETs formation, their participation in host bacterial clearance and their contribution to organ dysfunction in sepsis. C57Bl/6 mice were subjected to endotoxic shock or a polymicrobial sepsis model induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). The involvement of cf-DNA/NETs in the physiopathology of sepsis was evaluated through NETs degradation by rhDNase. This treatment was also associated with a broad-spectrum antibiotic treatment (ertapenem) in mice after CLP. CLP or endotoxin administration induced a significant increase in the serum concentrations of NETs. The increase in CLP-induced NETs was sustained over a period of 3 to 24 h after surgery in mice and was not inhibited by the antibiotic treatment. Systemic rhDNase treatment reduced serum NETs and increased the bacterial load in non-antibiotic-treated septic mice. rhDNase plus antibiotics attenuated sepsis-induced organ damage and improved the survival rate. The correlation between the presence of NETs in peripheral blood and organ dysfunction was evaluated in 31 septic patients. Higher cf-DNA concentrations were detected in septic patients in comparison with healthy controls, and levels were correlated with sepsis severity and organ dysfunction. In conclusion, cf-DNA/NETs are formed during sepsis and are associated with sepsis severity. In the experimental setting, the degradation of NETs by rhDNase attenuates organ damage only when combined with antibiotics, confirming that NETs take part in sepsis pathogenesis. Altogether, our results suggest that NETs are important for host bacterial control and are relevant actors in the pathogenesis of sepsis.  相似文献

Tropical peatlands store a significant portion of the global soil carbon (C) pool. However, tropical mountain peatlands contain extensive peat soils that have yet to be mapped or included in global C estimates. This lack of data hinders our ability to inform policy and apply sustainable management practices to these peatlands that are experiencing unprecedented high rates of land use and land cover change. Rapid large‐scale mapping activities are urgently needed to quantify tropical wetland extent and rate of degradation. We tested a combination of multidate, multisensor radar and optical imagery (Landsat TM/PALSAR/RADARSAT‐1/TPI image stack) for detecting peatlands in a 2715 km2 area in the high elevation mountains of the Ecuadorian páramo. The map was combined with an extensive soil coring data set to produce the first estimate of regional peatland soil C storage in the páramo. Our map displayed a high coverage of peatlands (614 km2) containing an estimated 128.2 ± 9.1 Tg of peatland belowground soil C within the mapping area. Scaling‐up to the country level, páramo peatlands likely represent less than 1% of the total land area of Ecuador but could contain as much as ~23% of the above‐ and belowground vegetation C stocks in Ecuadorian forests. These mapping approaches provide an essential methodological improvement applicable to mountain peatlands across the globe, facilitating mapping efforts in support of effective policy and sustainable management, including national and global C accounting and C management efforts.  相似文献
