We measured the food consumption rates in the omnivorous copepod Mesocyclops thermocyclopoides on different animal prey types in the presence of, and in the absence of one of the algal food types, the small, nonmotile Chlorella, or the large, motile Chlorogonium. Animal prey tested included different zooplankton species covering a size range of 88 to 1446 μm. The number of animal prey consumed was inversely proportional, but the total weight consumed was directly proportional, to the body size and dry weight of the prey item. There was a significant reduction in animal prey consumption in the presence of algae, being higher with cladoceran prey than with ciliates and rotifers, and in the presence of Chlorogonium than in the presence of Chlorella. Cannibalism in M. thermocyclopoides was low when algal food was available.  相似文献

Understanding protein stability at residue level detail in the native state ensemble of a protein is crucial to understanding its biological function. At the same time, deriving thermodynamic parameters using conventional spectroscopic and calorimetric techniques remains a major challenge for some proteins due to protein aggregation and irreversibility of denaturation at higher temperature values. In this regard, we describe here the NMR investigations on the conformational stabilities and related thermodynamic parameters such as local unfolding enthalpies, heat capacities and transition midpoints in DLC8 dimer, by using temperature dependent native state hydrogen exchange; this protein aggregates at high (>65°C) temperatures. The stability (free energy) of the native state was found to vary substantially with temperature at every residue. Significant differences were found in the thermodynamic parameters at individual residue sites indicating that the local environments in the protein structure would respond differently to external perturbations; this reflects on plasticity differences in different regions of the protein. Further, comparison of this data with similar data obtained from GdnHCl dependent native state hydrogen exchange indicated many similarities at residue level, suggesting that local unfolding transitions may be similar in both the cases. This has implications for the folding/unfolding mechanisms of the protein. Multiplayer games are representative of a large class of distributed applications that suffer from redundant communication, bottlenecks, single points of failure and poor reactivity to changing network conditions. Many of these problems can be alleviated through simple network adaptations at the infrastructure level. In this paper, we describe a model in which game packets are directed along the edges of a rooted tree connecting the players, aggregated during the upstream flight and multicast from the root to the leaves. This tree is constructed based on a heuristic, and can dynamically adjust itself in response to changes in network conditions. This gaming infrastructure is built and maintained using active networks, which is currently the only open architecture suitable for these types of applications. We have designed and implemented a prototype using ANTS that performs these adaptations for unmodified DOOM clients. We present analytical and simulation results that illustrate the reduction in communication overhead, and show that the multicast tree can quickly adjust to changing network conditions. The overhead of the active network-based middleware is acceptable, especially in wide-area networks.  相似文献

Summary The oxidative activity of mitochondria freshly isolated from brown adipose tissue of rats was stimulated two-fold on the addition of small concentrations of exogenous cytochrome c to the reaction medium. Loss of membrane-bound cytochrome c did not occur during isolation of mitochondria. Estimation of the high-affinity binding sites on the organelle membrane indicated that less than a third of these sites remained saturated with cytochrome c. The pigment is thus shown to be a functionally limiting electron transport component in brown adipose tissue.  相似文献

Summary The effect of a commercial granular formulation of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) on nitrification in a flooded soil was studied at 10 and 100 ppm a.i. The oxidation of the added ammonium to nitrate was inhibited significantly at 10 ppm and almost completely at 100 ppm, concomitant with a proportional decrease in the, populations of ammonium- and nitrite-oxidising autotrophic bacteria. Of special interest is the synergistic increase in the inhibition of nitrification by a combined application of HCH and carbofuran.  相似文献

The gastric branch of the vagus nerve, close to the stomach was stimulated electrically and the evoked potentials recorded from the fasciculus solitarius of frog within the stereotaxic coordinates P 4.1-4.6; L 0.5-0.8 and V 0.3-0.5. A predominantly monophasic negative potential, the amplitude (1.0-3.0 mV) of which rises with increase in stimulus strength up to 6 V, could be recorded. From the velocity of conduction (30 m/sec) it appears that the gastric afferent fibres belong to Group A. The depth-recording resulted in the reversal of the negative sign of the potential at depth beyond 180-200 mu. The significance of the appearance of a positive potential and the cellular configuration of the area of fasciculus is discussed in the context of a possible dipole that might exist in the spatial structure from which the depth-recording has been made.  相似文献
