In 15 dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) the basal prolactin concentrations (means of 6 determinations; range 2.8-24.7 micrograms/l) were significantly higher than those of 23 healthy control dogs (0.9-10.5 micrograms/l). In five dogs with hyperadrenocorticism due to adrenocortical tumour (ATH) the prolactin concentrations were also significantly elevated, but still significantly lower than the values of the dogs with PDH. The prolactin concentrations of the dogs with PDH responded supranormally to TRH-stimulation, whereas in the dogs with ATH the response was not significantly different from the results in the control dogs. Following bromocriptine administration the plasma prolactin concentrations of the dogs with PDH decreased considerably but remained higher than the values obtained in the control dogs and the dogs with ATH. It is concluded that PDH in the dog is associated with a disturbance in the regulation of prolactin secretion, that is not secondary to hypercortisolism per se.  相似文献

In a previous study of normal subjects exercising at sea level and simulated altitude, ventilation-perfusion (VA/Q) inequality and alveolar-end-capillary O2 diffusion limitation (DIFF) were found to increase on exercise at altitude, but at sea level the changes did not reach statistical significance. This paper reports additional measurements of VA/Q inequality and DIFF (at sea level and altitude) and also of pulmonary arterial pressure. This was to examine the hypothesis that VA/Q inequality is related to increased pulmonary arterial pressure. In a hypobaric chamber, eight normal subjects were exposed to barometric pressures of 752, 523, and 429 Torr (sea level, 10,000 ft, and 15,000 ft) in random order. At each altitude, inert and respiratory gas exchange and hemodynamic variables were studied at rest and during several levels of steady-state bicycle exercise. Multiple inert gas data from the previous and current studies were combined (after demonstrating no statistical difference between them) and showed increasing VA/Q inequality with sea level exercise (P = 0.02). Breathing 100% O2 did not reverse this increase. When O2 consumption exceeded about 2.7 1/min, evidence for DIFF at sea level was present (P = 0.01). VA/Q inequality and DIFF increased with exercise at altitude as found previously and was reversed by 100% O2 breathing. Indexes of VA/Q dispersion correlated well with mean pulmonary arterial pressure and also with minute ventilation. This study confirms the development of both VA/Q mismatch and DIFF in normal subjects during heavy exercise at sea level. However, the mechanism of increased VA/Q mismatch on exercise remains unclear due to the correlation with both ventilatory and circulatory variables and will require further study.  相似文献

Telemetry studies on aquatic animals often use external tags to monitor migration patterns and help to inform conservation effort. However, external tags are known to impair swimming energetics dramatically in a variety of species, including the endangered European eel. Due to their high swimming efficiency, anguilliform swimmers are very susceptibility for added drag. Using an integration of swimming physiology, behaviour and kinematics, we investigated the effect of additional drag and site of externally attached tags on swimming mode and costs. The results show a significant effect of a) attachment site and b) drag on multiple energetic parameters, such as Cost Of Transport (COT), critical swimming speed (Ucrit) and optimal swimming speed (Uopt), possibly due to changes in swimming kinematics. Attachment at 0.125 bl from the tip of the snout is a better choice than at the Centre Of Mass (0.35 bl), as it is the case in current telemetry studies. Quantification of added drag effect on COT and Ucrit show a (limited) correlation, suggesting that the Ucrit test can be used for evaluating external tags for telemetry studies until a certain threshold value. Uopt is not affected by added drag, validating previous findings of telemetry studies. The integrative methodology and the evaluation tool presented here can be used for the design of new studies using external telemetry tags, and the (re-) evaluation of relevant studies on anguilliform swimmers.  相似文献

Summary Respiration and N2-fixation (acetylene reduction) ofAzotobacter vinelandii have been studied at a variety of soil water potentials. Both processes were strictly linked and strongly reduced at water potentials between –0.6 and –1.3 MPa. Complete inhibition occurred below –2.1MPa. Osmotic potentials in soil compared to matric potentials of the same value were less inhibitory to respiration and acetylene reduction by Azotobacter. The N2-fixing efficiency (mg N/g glucose) was not influenced by water potentials ranging from –0.1 to –2.1 MPa.  相似文献

Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus, strain Bd. 109 Sa, generates ATP mainly by oxidative phosphorylation during electron transport. During exponential growth the ATP pool is constant (9 nmoles/100 μg N) indicating that energy-producing and energy-consuming reactions are well balanced. The ratio of substrate respiration/endogenous respiration is approx. 2.5/1. Energy charge is constant both in endogenous and substrate respiration at values of 0.62 to 0.64. During endogenous respiration (starvation) the ATP pool oscillates at regular intervals. ATP over-production is started after the ATP pool has decreased to a minimum level of 6 nmoles/100 μg N. The alternating over- and under-production of ATP is interpreted as a special regulation which enables the organism to make economic use of its own cellular materials. Addition of substrate (glutamate) to starving cells does not influence the type of ATP pool oscillation as observed in endogenous respiration. The parasitic strain Bd. 109 Pa exhibits the same periodicity of ATP overproduction as does its saprophytic derivative, Bd. 109 Sa. Decrease of viability during starvation is paralleled by a decrease of the ATP pool.  相似文献

Impaired wound healing can lead to scarring, and aesthetical and functional problems. The cytoprotective haem oxygenase (HO) enzymes degrade haem into iron, biliverdin and carbon monoxide. HO‐1 deficient mice suffer from chronic inflammatory stress and delayed cutaneous wound healing, while corneal wound healing in HO‐2 deficient mice is impaired with exorbitant inflammation and absence of HO‐1 expression. This study addresses the role of HO‐2 in cutaneous excisional wound healing using HO‐2 knockout (KO) mice. Here, we show that HO‐2 deficiency also delays cutaneous wound closure compared to WT controls. In addition, we detected reduced collagen deposition and vessel density in the wounds of HO‐2 KO mice compared to WT controls. Surprisingly, wound closure in HO‐2 KO mice was accompanied by an inflammatory response comparable to WT mice. HO‐1 induction in HO‐2 deficient skin was also similar to WT controls and may explain this protection against exaggerated cutaneous inflammation but not the delayed wound closure. Proliferation and myofibroblast differentiation were similar in both two genotypes. Next, we screened for candidate genes to explain the observed delayed wound closure, and detected delayed gene and protein expression profiles of the chemokine (C‐X‐C) ligand‐11 (CXCL‐11) in wounds of HO‐2 KO mice. Abnormal regulation of CXCL‐11 has been linked to delayed wound healing and disturbed angiogenesis. However, whether aberrant CXCL‐11 expression in HO‐2 KO mice is caused by or is causing delayed wound healing needs to be further investigated.  相似文献
