This study formulates a model to maximize the profit of a lignocellulosic biofuel supply chain ranging from feedstock suppliers to biofuel customers. The model deals with a time-staged, multi-commodity, production/distribution system, prescribing facility locations and capacities, technologies, and material flows. A case study based on a region in Central Texas demonstrates application of the proposed model to design the most profitable biofuel supply chain under each of several scenarios. A sensitivity analysis identifies that ethanol (ETOH) price is the most significant factor in the economic viability of a lignocellulosic biofuel supply chain.  相似文献

Selection can occur in the pistil, during a series of stages that include both pre-zygotic (pollen germination, pollen tube growth, and fertilization) and post-zygotic events. This study explores the extent to which selection, at this level, could be due to the environmental conditions under which the maternal parent is growing. Five plants of Mimulus guttatus, tolerant to copper, were vegetatively cloned and each clone was grown in control and in solutions to which copper was added. The maternal plants received pollen from plants either tolerant or sensitive to copper. Seeds and ovules were counted to estimate the number of seeds/capsule, the seed/ovule ratio, the percent fertilization, and the proportion of zygotes aborting for each clone, treatment and pollen source combination. There were large differences among the pollen recipients for each of the measurements. However, there was a consistent pattern to seed production depending on the pollen source and copper treatment. The seed/ovule ratio was unaffected if pollen came from tolerant sources but was reduced by an average of 24% for both copper supplemented treatments if pollen came from copper sensitive sources. Thus, the data indicated that selection due to environmental factors could occur within the pistil. Differences in percent fertilization were not statistically significant, but the seed/zygote ratio showed a pattern that was similar to seed production suggesting that abortion of immature seeds was responsible for most of the difference in seed production.  相似文献

Roughly 80% of animal species have complex life cycles spanning a major habitat shift, and delayed life history effects play an important role in their population dynamics. Through their effect on size at metamorphosis, factors in the pre‐ metamorphic environment often have profound effects upon survival and fecundity in the post‐metamorphic environment. Here, we adopted a combined experimental and field observational approach to investigate the factors that determine size at metamorphosis in pond‐breeding amphibians, and to predict some of their downstream effects on population stability. We set up ecologically realistic mesocosm communities for the endangered California tiger salamander Ambystoma californiense to test the effects of larval density, prey density and hydroperiod on mean size at metamorphosis. We found significant effects for all three factors, with mean size at metamorphosis negatively correlated with larval density and positively correlated with prey density and hydroperiod. We also used six years of field survey data to identify the most informative model explaining mean size at metamorphosis and thus validate our mesocosm results. The optimal three‐term model identified terms that were roughly analogous to each of the mesocosm treatments and with similar effect sizes, providing strong field confirmation of our experimental results. The field data also provide correlations between each factor and the number of metamorphs recruited to the population, allowing us to predict the effect of each factor on population stability. Finally, we show that these populations of the endangered A. californiense are strongly resource limited, which has important implications for their management and recovery as an endangered taxon.  相似文献

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and is especially prevalent in the elderly. Because aging is a risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus, and insulin resistance may contribute to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), anti-diabetic agents (thiazolidinediones-TZDs) are being studied for the treatment of cognitive decline associated with AD. These agents normalize insulin sensitivity in the periphery and can improve cognition and verbal memory in AD patients. Based on evidence that Ca2+ dysregulation is a pathogenic factor of brain aging/AD, we tested the hypothesis that TZDs could impact Ca2+ signaling/homeostasis in neurons. We assessed the effects of pioglitazone and rosiglitazone (TZDs) on two major sources of Ca2+ influx in primary hippocampal cultured neurons, voltage-gated Ca2+ channel (VGCC) and the NMDA receptor (NMDAR). VGCC- and NMDAR-mediated Ca2+ currents were recorded using patch-clamp techniques, and Ca2+ intracellular levels were monitored with Ca2+ imaging techniques. Rosiglitazone, but not pioglitazone reduced VGCC currents. In contrast, NMDAR-mediated currents were significantly reduced by pioglitazone but not rosiglitazone. These results show that TZDs modulate Ca2+-dependent pathways in the brain and have different inhibitory profiles on two major Ca2+ sources, potentially conferring neuroprotection to an area of the brain that is particularly vulnerable to the effects of aging and/or AD.  相似文献

Background

The diversity of visual systems in fish has long been of interest for evolutionary biologists and neurophysiologists, and has recently begun to attract the attention of molecular evolutionary geneticists. Several recent studies on the copy number and genomic organization of visual pigment proteins, the opsins, have revealed an increased opsin diversity in fish relative to most vertebrates, brought about through recent instances of opsin duplication and divergence. However, for the subfamily of opsin genes that mediate vision at the long-wavelength end of the spectrum, the LWS opsins, it appears that most fishes possess only one or two loci, a value comparable to most other vertebrates. Here, we characterize the LWS opsins from cDNA of an individual guppy, Poecilia reticulata, a fish that is known exhibit variation in its long-wavelength sensitive visual system, mate preferences and colour patterns.

Results

We identified six LWS opsins expressed within a single individual. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that these opsins descend from duplication events both pre-dating and following the divergence of the guppy lineage from that of the bluefin killifish, Lucania goodei, the closest species for which comparable data exists. Numerous amino acid substitutions exist among these different LWS opsins, many at sites known to be important for visual pigment function, including spectral sensitivity and G-protein activation. Likelihood analyses using codon-based models of evolution reveal significant changes in selective constraint along two of the guppy LWS opsin lineages.

Conclusion

The guppy displays an unusually high number of LWS opsins compared to other fish, and to vertebrates in general. Observing both substitutions at functionally important sites and the persistence of lineages across species boundaries suggests that these opsins might have functionally different roles, especially with regard to G-protein activation. The reasons why are currently unknown, but may relate to aspects of the guppy's behavioural ecology, in which both male colour patterns and the female mate preferences for these colour patterns experience strong, highly variable selection pressures.

Copper tolerance is expressed in the diploid sporophyte as well as the microgametophyte of Mimulus guttatus. Previous studies, based on reproductive output, suggested that selection for copper tolerance could occur within the pistil. The objective of this study was to determine if selection within the pistil can increase sporophytic tolerance to copper and to determine whether this selection occurs pre- or postzygotically. Mixtures of pollen from copper tolerant or sensitive sources or from plants heterozygous for tolerance to copper were applied at two intensities to plants cloned and grown in control or copper supplemented solutions. The proportion of copper tolerant progeny showed a small, 7%, but significant increase when pollen recipients were grown with added copper. Comparisons of the numbers of tolerant progeny, as well as various components of reproduction, following light and heavy pollinations suggested that microgametophytic selection was unlikely to account for this increase. However, the 8 to 10% decrease in the seed/zygote ratio, compared to control values, was sufficient to account for the difference in proportion of copper tolerant progeny from control and copper treated plants. Thus, it appeared likely that selection for copper tolerance could occur within the pistil, and that much of this selection occurred postzygotically through the early failure of developing seeds.  相似文献

Repertoire matching occurs when one songbird replies to another with a song type that the two birds share. Repertoire matching has previously been demonstrated to occur at well above chance levels in a western population of song sparrows, where it is hypothesized to serve as a low level threat in a hierarchy of aggressive signals. Here we test for repertoire matching in an eastern population of song sparrows. Previous work indicates that this eastern population differs from the western one in having lower levels of song sharing between neighboring males and in showing no association between song sharing and territory tenure. Here we confirm that males in this eastern population on average share few whole songs with their neighbors. The eastern males are familiar with their neighbors’ repertoires, as evidenced by a stronger singing response to stranger song than to neighbor song. Males in the eastern population did not repertoire match: when played an unshared song type from a specific neighbor, they did not reply with a song type shared with that neighbor more often than expected by chance or more often than in response to playback of a control song (an unshared stranger song). The results thus demonstrate a qualitative difference in vocal signaling strategies between two populations of the same species.  相似文献

Male red-winged blackbirds were given implants of testosterone or flutamide in order to manipulate the level of androgen reaching receptor sites. Implants of cholesterol were given as controls. Radioimmunoassay showed higher levels of testosterone and DHT in the plasma of testosterone-implanted birds than in the plasma of the pooled flutamide-implanted and cholesterol-implanted birds. Dominance was significantly correlated with effective androgen level. Androgen level was not correlated with rates of supplantations per subordinate but was correlated with rates of escalated attacks per subordinate. Thus androgen level influences dominance in male red-winged blackbirds by influencing one component of aggressiveness.  相似文献
