The purpose of this study was to test the general hypothesis that sympathoinhibitory cardiopulmonary baroreflexes modulate sympathetic outflow during voluntary exercise in humans. Direct (microneurographic) measurements of postganglionic sympathetic nerve activity to noncontracting muscle (MSNA) were made from the right peroneal nerve in the leg, and arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate (HR) were recorded in 10 healthy subjects before (control) and for 2.5 min during each of five interventions: 1) lower-body negative pressure at -10 mmHg (LBNP) alone, 2 and 3) isometric handgrip exercise at 15 and 30% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) alone, and 4 and 5) handgrip at 15 and 30% MVC performed during LBNP. During LBNP alone, which should have reduced cardiopulmonary baroreflex sympathoinhibition, AP and HR did not change from control, but MSNA increased 93 +/- 24% (P less than 0.05). Handgrip elicited contraction intensity-dependent increases in AP and HR (P less than 0.05), but MSNA increased above control only at the 30% MVC level (165 +/- 30%, P less than 0.05). The HR, AP, and MSNA responses to either level of handgrip performed during LBNP were not different from the algebraic sums of the corresponding responses to handgrip and LBNP performed separately (P greater than 0.05). Since there was no facilitation of the MSNA response to handgrip when performed during LBNP compared with algebraic sums of the separate responses, our results do not support the hypothesis that cardiopulmonary baroreflexes modulate (inhibit) sympathetic outflow during exercise in humans.  相似文献

Insect reproduction is extremely variable, but the implications of alternative genetic systems are often overlooked in studies on the evolution of insecticide resistance. Both ecotypes of Pediculus humanus (Phthiraptera: Pediculidae), the human head and body lice, are human ectoparasites, the control of which is challenged by the recent spread of resistance alleles. The present study conclusively establishes for the first time that both head and body lice reproduce through paternal genome elimination (PGE), an unusual genetic system in which males transmit only their maternally derived chromosomes. Here, we investigate inheritance patterns of parental genomes using a genotyping approach across families of both ecotypes and show that heterozygous males exclusively or preferentially pass on one allele only, whereas females transmit both in a Mendelian fashion. We do however observe occasional transmission of paternal chromosomes through males, representing the first known case of PGE in which whole‐genome meiotic drive is incomplete. Finally, we discuss the potential implications of this finding for the evolution of resistance and invite the development of new theoretical models of how this knowledge might contribute to increasing the success of pediculicide‐based management schemes.  相似文献

Achenes of all the Tragopogon species from the Iberian Peninsula were examined by means of scanning-electron microscopy and stereomicroscopy. The achenes of the eight species are described, illustrated and compared. The results are contrasted with the systematics of this genus. The isolated position of T. lamottei with regard to the other seven species is noted. A key is provided to enable the different species to be distinguished.  相似文献

Abstract Mosquito collections were conducted during a dengue outbreak in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, July-December 1995. A total of 6694 adult mosquitoes (four genera and nine species) were captured, of which 2986 (78.3% females and 21.7% males) were Aedes albopictus and 2339 (39.7% females and 60.3% males) were Ae.aegypti. These two species comprised 84.2% of the total collection. Specimens were grouped into pools, nearly 50% of them processed for detection of virus by cythopathic effect in C6-36 and VERO cell cultures and by haemagglutination test. Five pools gave positive haemagglutin-ation reactions and were examined by immunofluorescence using monoclonal antibodies to flavivirus and to dengue virus. One pool of ten Ae.albopictus males was positive for dengue virus: serotypes 2 and 3 were identified by serotype-specific monoclonal antibodies arid confirmed by RT-PCR. This is the first report of Ae.albopictus naturally infected with dengue virus in America. Also, it is the very first time Ae.albopictus males have been found infected with dengue virus in the wild.  相似文献

Tanaka, Hirofumi, and Douglas R. Seals. Age and genderinteractions in physiological functional capacity: insight from swimming performance. J. Appl.Physiol. 82(3): 846-851, 1997.One experimentalapproach to studying the effects of aging on physiological functionalcapacity in humans is to analyze the peak exercise performance ofhighly trained athletes with increasing age. To gain insight into therelationships among age, gender, and exercise task duration with use ofthis model, we performed a 5-yr (1991-1995) retrospective analysisof top freestyle performance times from the US Masters SwimmingChampionships. Regression analysis showed that in both men and womenendurance swimming performance (i.e., 1,500 m) declined linearly frompeak levels at age 35-40 yr until ~70 yr of age, whereuponperformance declined exponentially thereafter. In both genders, thevariability among the top 10 winning times in each 5-yr age intervalincreased markedly with advancing age. Compared with the 1,500-mfreestyle, performance in the 50-m freestyle (short-duration task)showed only a modest decline until ages 75 and 80 yr in women and men,respectively. The rate and magnitude of the declines in both short- andlong-duration swimming performance with age were significantly(P < 0.05) greater in women than in men. In the women, the percent decline in swimming performance over a50-yr age period from the 19- to 24-yr to the 69- to 74-yr age groupsbecame progressively greater from the shortest distance (50 m) to thetwo longest distances (800 and 1,500 m), whereas in men, no differenceswere observed in the magnitude of performance decline with age amongthe five longest distance events (i.e., 100-1,500 m). The percentgender difference in performance throughout the age range studiedbecame progressively smaller (P < 0.05) with increasing distance from 50 m (19 ± 1%) to 1,500 m (11 ± 1%). The findings in this cross-sectional study indicate that from peak levels at age 35-40 yr, physiological functionalcapacity, as assessed by swimming performance, decreases linearly until ~70-80 yr of age, whereupon the decline becomes exponential.Moreover, the rate of decline with advancing age appears to beassociated with event duration and gender.

Fitzgerald, Margaret D., Hirofumi Tanaka, Zung V. Tran, andDouglas R. Seals. Age-related declines in maximal aerobic capacityin regularly exercising vs. sedentary women: a meta-analysis. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(1): 160-165, 1997.Our purpose was to determine the relationship between habitualaerobic exercise status and the rate of decline in maximal aerobiccapacity across the adult age range in women. A meta-analytic approachwas used in which mean maximal oxygen consumption(O2 max) values fromfemale subject groups (ages 18-89 yr) were obtained from thepublished literature. A total of 239 subject groups from 109 studiesinvolving 4,884 subjects met the inclusion criteria and werearbitrarily separated into sedentary (groups = 107; subjects = 2,256),active (groups = 69; subjects = 1,717), and endurance-trained (groups = 63; subjects = 911) populations.O2 max averaged 29.7 ± 7.8, 38.7 ± 9.2, and 52.0 ± 10.5 ml · kg1 · min1,respectively, and was inversely related to age within each population (r = 0.82 to 0.87, allP < 0.0001). The rate of decline inO2 max withincreasing subject group age was lowest in sedentary women (3.5ml · kg1 · min1· decade1), greater inactive women (4.4ml · kg1 · min1· decade1), andgreatest in endurance-trained women (6.2ml · kg1 · min1 · decade1)(all P < 0.001 vs. each other). Whenexpressed as percent decrease from mean levels at age ~25 yr, therates of decline inO2 max were similarin the three populations (10.0 to 10.9%/decade). Therewas no obvious relationship between aerobic exercise status and therate of decline in maximal heart rate with age. The results of thiscross-sectional study support the hypothesis that, in contrast to theprevailing view, the rate of decline in maximal aerobic capacity withage is greater, not smaller, in endurance-trained vs. sedentary women.The greater rate of decline inO2 max in endurance-trained populations may be related to their higher values asyoung adults (baseline effect) and/or to greater age-related reductions in exercise volume; however, it does not appear to berelated to a greater rate of decline in maximal heart rate with age.
