Variation in the percentage of lambs seroconverting to bluetongue viruses was seen between sites and years in Barbados. Transmission at some sites was nearly absent whereas all lambs at one site became seropositive. The agar gel immunodiffusion test for bluetongue gave consistent results in series of serum samples from 112 of 121 sentinel lambs. Collections of biting midges in association with sheep yielded six species: Culicoides insignis Lutz, C. pusillus Lutz, C. phlebotomus (Williston), C. furens (Poey), C. jamaicensis Edwards and C. trilineatus Fox. The first two species comprised 92% of those caught during a sentinel lamb study and were the predominant species trapped for virus isolation. No viruses were recovered from 5517 C. insignis, 614 C. pusillus, three C. trilineatus and two C. furens placed into pools during two brief intensive trapping operations.  相似文献

1. Aggregative behaviour in fungivorous soil arthropods is widespread; its adaptive value, however, is largely unknown. In this study, the spatial foraging behaviour of a collembolan, Folsomia candida, and the fitness consequences of feeding at different densities on the filamentous fungus Aspergillus nidulans were investigated. The effect of two fungal strains were compared; a wild‐type (wt) and a transgenic strain that lacks the ability to express the global secondary metabolite regulator LaeA (ΔlaeA). 2. In laboratory foraging tests, F. candida exhibited aggregated distributions of individuals across four distinct fungal colonies that were arranged in short distances from each other. By quantifying the extent of the feeding damage at each single colony, a more evenly distributed feeding activity was found among wt colonies than among chemical‐deficient colonies. 3. In a fitness experiment, where collembolans at different densities were restricted to feed on single A. nidulans colonies, mean growth rate of F. candida was positively related to density on the wt A. nidulans strain, but negatively related to density on the chemical‐deficient strain. 4. Depending on the fungus' ability to express secondary chemicals and availability of fungal food sources, F. candida may employ different foraging strategies: (i) avoidance of prolonged feeding on single colonies in a rich habitat (travel costs low), and (ii) intensified group feeding on single colonies in a resource‐limited habitat (travel costs high). It was hypothesised that flexibility in fungivore foraging behaviour (clumping vs. spreading feeding activity) is adaptive because it allows avoidance/overcoming induced fungal chemical defence.  相似文献

Morphological features of Manduca sexta plasma lipid transfer particle (LTP) have been investigated by electron microscopy. LTP was found to be an asymmetric particle with two major structural features: a roughly spherical head and an elongated, hinged tail. The hinge occurs approximately at the midpoint of the tail section with the two halves forming angles ranging from 30 degrees to 180 degrees. A molecular mass estimate of 1.4 x 10(6) daltons based on the dimensions of LTP suggests that multiple copies (two or three) of each of the three LTP apoproteins exist in the native complex. Limited digestion studies of LTP suggest that apoLTP-III is less susceptible to trypsin cleavage than apoLTP-I or -II, and therefore may be less exposed to the aqueous environment. Digestion for 1 h at a 1:50 trypsin-LTP protein ratio did not alter the flotation properties of LTP or its morphological features; thus, although significant proteolysis occurred, the particle retained its overall structure. Transfer activity, on the other hand, was affected by trypsin digestion with 30 +/- 14% inhibition of LTP activity occurring upon proteolysis at a 1:50 trypsin-LTP protein ratio. Treatment of LTP with phospholipase A2 resulted in the conversion of LTP-associated phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine to their corresponding lyso forms. Phospholipase A2 treatment did not, however, alter the SDS-PAGE profile, transfer activity, flotation pattern, or the microscopic features of LTP. These results suggest that the products of the phospholipase reaction remain associated with the particle.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

We report evidence of enzootic morbillivirus infection among long-finned, Globicephala melas, and short-finned, G. macrorhynchus, pilot whales in the western Atlantic. A retrospective serologic survey, using five morbilliviruses, was carried out on 99 G. melas from 14 stranding events between 1982 and 1993 and from 25 G. macrorhynchus stranded in 5 events between 1986 and 1994. A blood sample was also obtained from an adult G. melas by-caught in the western North Atlantic. Tissues were collected from 24 G. melas and 15 G. macrorhynchus for histology and immunoperoxidase staining. Neutralizing antibody titers were found in 92 (92%) of 100 G. melas and 16 (64%) of 25 G. macrorynchus, and titers were highest against cetacean morbilliviruses. Seroprevalence was similar between age classes and sexes. The earliest evidence of infection was in a G. melas that stranded in 1982. Stable antibody titers were observed in pilot whales under rehabilitation for up to eight months. Clinical disease consistent with morbillivirus pneumonia was detected in a G. melas calf. Immunoperoxidase staining confirmed that viral antigen was present in the lesions. We propose that enzootic infection in pilot whales is facilitated by population size, social structure, and migration patterns. Furthermore, through mixing with other odontocetes, pilot whales could act as vectors through the Atlantic. Clinical morbillivirus infection may precipitate mass strandings of highly social odontocetes.  相似文献
