The physical ends of mammalian and other vertebrate chromosomes consist of tandemly repeated (TTAGGG)(n) hexamers, nucleating a specialized telomeric structure. However, (TTAGGG)(n) sequences can also occur at non-telomeric sites, providing important insights into karyotypic evolution. By fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) we studied the chromosomal distribution of (TTAGGG)(n) sequences in 16 bird species, representing seven different orders. Many species, in particular the ratites, display (TTAGGG)(n) hybridization signals in interstitial and centromeric regions of their macrochromosomes in addition to the typical telomeric signals. In some but not all species these non-telomeric sites coincide with C-band-positive heterochromatin. The retention and/or amplification of telomeric (TTAGGG)(n) repeats at interstitial and centromeric sites may indicate the fusion of ancestral chromosomes. Compared with the macrochromosomes, the microchromosomes of most species are enriched with (TTAGGG)(n) sequences, displaying heterogeneous hybridization patterns. We propose that this high density of (TTAGGG)(n) repeats contributes to the exceptionally high meiotic recombination rate of avian microchromosomes.  相似文献

Solid tumors are more than an accumulation of cancer cells. Indeed, cancerous cells create a permissive microenvironment by exploiting non-transformed host cells. Thus, solid tumors rather resemble abnormal organs composed of the cancerous cells itself and the stroma providing the supportive framework. The stroma can be divided into the extracellular matrix consisting of proteoglycans, hyaluronic acid, and fibrous proteins, as well as stromal cells including mesenchymal and immune cells; moreover, it contains various peptide factors and metabolites. To develop a more sustainable bio‐based economy, an increasing amount of carbon for industrial applications and biofuel will be obtained from bioenergy crops. This may result in intensified land use and potential conflicts with other ecosystem services provided by soil, such as control of greenhouse gas emissions, carbon sequestration, and nutrient dynamics. A growing number of studies examine how bioenergy crops influence carbon and nitrogen cycling. Few studies, however, have combined such assessments with analysing both the immediate effects on the provisioning of soil ecosystem services as well as the legacy effects for subsequent crops in the rotation. Here, we present results from field and laboratory experiments on effects of a standard first‐generation bioenergy crop (maize) and three different second‐generation bioenergy crops (willow short rotation coppice (SRC), Miscanthus × giganteus, switchgrass) on key soil quality parameters: soil structure, organic matter, biodiversity and growth and disease susceptibility of a major follow‐up crop, wheat (Triticum aestivum). We analysed a 6‐year field experiment and show that willow SRC, Miscanthus, and maize maintained a high yield over this period. Soil quality parameters and legacy effects of Miscanthus and switchgrass were similar or performed worse than maize. In contrast, willow SRC enhanced soil organic carbon concentration (0–5 cm), soil fertility, and soil biodiversity in the upper soil layer when compared to maize. In a greenhouse experiment, wheat grown in willow soil had higher biomass production than when grown in maize or Miscanthus soil and exhibited no growth reduction in response to introduction of a soil‐borne (Rhizoctonia solani) or a leaf pathogen (Mycosphaerella graminicola). We conclude that the choice of bioenergy crops can greatly influence provisioning of soil ecosystem services and legacy effects in soil. Our results imply that bioenergy crops with specific traits might even enhance ecosystem properties through positive legacy effects.  相似文献

Phosphorylation of synaptosomal plasma membranes from rat hippocampus in the presence of the convulsant drug 4-aminopyridine resulted in the inhibition of the phosphorylation of the nervous tissue specific protein kinase C substrate protein B-50 (48 kDa) and the alpha-subunit of calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (50 kDa). Preincubation of SPM with 2-amino-5-phosphonovalerate prevents the inhibition of B-50 phosphorylation by 4-aminopyridine, but had no effect on the inhibition of 50 kDa phosphorylation. 2-Amino-5-phosphonovalerate is known to be a specific N-methyl-D-aspartate antagonist and has anti-epileptic activity in vitro and in vivo. Several other anti-epileptic drugs tested did not influence the 4-aminopyridine-induced inhibition of protein phosphorylation.  相似文献

This study shows that in African catfish Clarias gariepinus feed intake ( I F) is stimulated by the presence of conspecifics resulting in higher I F and growth rate. The feeding duration and the frequency of feeding acts were lower in isolated fish as compared with non-isolated fish, indicating a decreased feeding motivation when fish are held individually. Isolation per se , however, seems not to act as a stressor in the short-term or to affect the stress response, probably because periods of isolation are part of the African catfish lifestyle.  相似文献

Large herbivores are key drivers of nutrient cycling in ecosystems worldwide, and hence they have an important influence on the productivity and species composition in plant communities. Classical theories describe that large herbivores can accelerate or decelerate nitrogen (N) mineralization by altering the quality and quantity of resource input (e.g. dung, urine, plant litter) into the soil food web. However, in many situations the impact of herbivores on N mineralization cannot be explained by changes in resource quality and quantity.In this paper, we aim to reconcile observations of herbivores on N mineralization that were previously regarded as contradictory. We conceptually integrate alternative pathways via which herbivores can alter N mineralization. We illustrate our new integrated perspective by using herbivore-induced soil compaction and subsequent changes in soil moisture and soil aeration as an example.We show that the net effect of herbivores on mineralization depends on the balance between herbivore-induced changes in soil physical properties and changes in the quality and quantity of resource input into the soil food web. For example, soil compaction by herbivores can limit oxygen or water availability in wet and dry soils respectively, particularly those with a fine texture. This can result in a reduction in N mineralization regardless of changes in resource quality or quantity. In such systems the plant community will shift towards species that are adapted to waterlogging (anoxia) or drought, respectively. In contrast, soils with intermediate moisture levels are less sensitive to compaction. In these soils, N mineralization rates are primarily associated with changes in resource quality and quantity.We conclude that our integrated perspective will help us to better understand when herbivores accelerate or decelerate soil nutrient cycling and improve our understanding of the functioning of grazed ecosystems.  相似文献

Studies of fish growth response to changes in dietary protein and energy content are often conducted with fish fed to apparent satiation or at fixed percentages of their body mass. Such designs result in simultaneous changes in protein and non-protein energy intake, thereby failing to distinguish their separate effects on nutrient partitioning and growth. The present study was designed to address this limitation and test the existence of distinct protein- and non-protein energy-dependent growth phases in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). All-male Nile tilapia (63 g, SD = 1.3) were subjected to an 8 × 2 factorial design consisting of eight levels of digestible protein (DP) intake (0.44–1.25 g/day) and two levels of non-protein digestible energy (NPDE) intake (16.0 and 22.4 kJ/day). Fish (n = 960) were housed in 60-litre tanks with two replicates per treatment and hand-fed twice a day for 42 days. Nutrient balances were calculated from changes in body mass, analysed body composition and digestible nutrient intake. Linear regression models were compared to linear-plateau regression models to determine whether protein gain followed distinct protein- and non-protein energy-dependent phases or not. Body mass gain increased linearly with increasing DP intake and was significantly higher (2.6 vs 2.3 g/d, P < 0.05) in fish receiving a high NPDE intake. This increase mainly reflected a higher mean fat gain (0.29 vs 0.20 g/d) rather than a higher protein gain (0.42 vs 0.39 g/d) in fish fed a high vs low level of NPDE intake. The comparison of linear and linear-plateau models did not give clear support for the presence of distinct protein and non-protein energy-dependent phases in protein gain. These results indicate that non-protein energy intake has a modest protein-sparing potential, and that protein gain is simultaneously limited by protein and energy intake in Nile tilapia.  相似文献

Cyclins are indispensable elements of the cell cycle and derangement of their function can lead to cancer formation. Recent studies have also revealed more mechanisms through which cyclins can express their oncogenic potential. This review focuses on the aberrant expression of G1/S cyclins and especially cyclin D and cyclin E; the pathways through which they lead to tumour formation and their involvement in different types of cancer.
