Animals are often forced to accommodate disturbance to their territories or nests. When nest relocation becomes necessary, it is important to efficiently evaluate alternative nest sites to choose the one most suitable under current conditions. However, if time is limiting, species may experience a speed-versus-accuracy trade-off when searching for a new home. We examined nest site selection under duress (in the form of flooding) in two species of ants: Linepithema humile and Tapinoma sessile. We predicted that if ants are able to assess and evacuate to the most suitable location, colonies should move to higher elevation, relative to their current nest site, in response to flooding. To test for a speed-versus-accuracy trade-off, we presented colonies with new nest chambers that were either higher, lower, or at the same height as their current nest and examined if their ability to efficiently choose a new site was influenced by the rate of flooding. When flooding rates were slow, both species favored the highest nest site and nearly always moved their entire nest to the same chamber. However, when the rate of flooding was doubled, colonies of T. sessile less often chose the highest nest site and were also more likely to split their nests between two of the available chambers. These results demonstrate a trade-off between speed and accuracy in nest site selection for odorous house ants, while L. humile retained their ability to adequately assess new nest sites under the conditions we presented. These patterns may arise from differences in exploratory behavior and activity between the two species. Despite having identical colony sizes, L. humile had approximately ten times more workers exploring the alternate nest sites 30 min into the experiment than did T. sessile.  相似文献

Imaging dynamic changes in chlorophyll a fluorescence provides a valuable means with which to examine localised changes in photosynthetic function. Microscope-based systems provide excellent spatial resolution which allows the response of individual cells to be measured. However, such systems have a restricted depth of focus and, as leaves are inherently uneven, only a small proportion of each image at any given focal plane is in focus. In this report we describe the development of algorithms, specifically adapted for imaging chlorophyll fluorescence and photosynthetic function in living plant cells, which allow extended-focus images to be reconstructed from images taken in different focal planes. We describe how these procedures can be used to reconstruct images of chlorophyll fluorescence and calculated photosynthetic parameters, as well as producing a map of leaf topology. The robustness of this procedure is demonstrated using leaves from a number of different plant species. Litter accumulates on the forest floor in Pinus patula Schlechtd. et Cham. plantations in Mpumalanga, South Africa especially in high altitude sites, as a result of an imbalance between litter production and decomposition. To determine which factor caused this increase we measured litter production in an age series of P. patula growing at low and high altitude sites. Litter production was shown to increase with increasing stand. The average annual litter production figure ranged from 3.64 to 5.89 t ha-1 yr-1 measured over a two-year period, with maximum litterfall occurring from mid-winter to early spring. Litter accumulation, as measured by litter depth, ranged from 39 to 121 mm. No significant relationship existed between litter production and altitude; however, litter accumulation was shown to increase with increasing stand age and increasing altitude. Increased litter production was, therefore, not responsible for the accumulation of litter in high altitude sites.  相似文献

Proton ENDOR resonances have been found from at least two different protons with fairly large and isotropic couplings of about 12 and 19 MHz. It is possible that such protons are attached to carbons that are one bond removed from the point of ligation to copper. A number of weakly coupled protons with anisotropic couplings have also been seen. None of the protons, either weakly or strongly coupled, appears to exchange with 2H2O. We have obtained nitrogen ENDOR from at least one nitrogen with a hyperfine coupling large enough for the nitrogen to be a ligand of copper. We have not yet demonstrated experimentally ENDOR characteristic of the copper nucleus itself.  相似文献

Gastric microsomal vesicles isolated from dog fundic mucosa were shown to be relatively ion tight and have a low level of proton permeability. The H+ translocase, basal ATPase and K+-activated ATPase activities of these vesicles were measured and the H+/ATP stoichiometry calculated using either the total K+-ATPase or the K+-stimulatable component (total K+-ATPase—basal ATPase). The former estimations consistently gave stoichiometric of approximately one, whereas the use of only the K+-stimulatable component gave widely differing values. Measurement of the dephosphorylation of the enzyme under basal conditions revealed both a labile and a stable phosphoenzyme component. The rate of decay of the labile component completely accounted for the basal ATPase activity observed. We conclude that the basal ATPase associated with our preparations is a spontaneous dephosphorylation of the phosphoenzyme occurring in the absence of K+ and that the H+/ATP stoichiometry of the gastric ATPase is one.  相似文献

Aim This study investigates inter‐annual variability in burnt area in southern Africa and the extent to which climate is responsible for this variation. We compare data from long‐term field sites across the region with remotely sensed burnt area data to test whether it is possible to develop a general model. Location Africa south of the equator. Methods Linear mixed effects models were used to determine the effect of rainfall, seasonality and fire weather in driving variation in fire extent between years, and to test whether the effect of these variables changes across the subcontinent and in areas more and less impacted by human activities. Results A simple model including rainfall and seasonality explained 40% of the variance in burnt area between years across 10 different protected areas on the subcontinent, but this model, when applied regionally, indicated that climate had less impact on year‐to‐year variation in burnt area than would be expected. It was possible to demonstrate that the relative importance of rainfall and seasonality changed as one moved from dry to wetter systems, but most noticeable was the reduction in climatically driven variability of fire outside protected areas. Inter‐annual variability is associated with the occurrence of large fires, and large fires are only found in areas with low human impact. Main conclusions This research gives the first data‐driven analysis of fire–climate interactions in southern Africa. The regional analysis shows that human impact on fire regimes is substantial and acts to limit the effect of climate in driving variation between years. This is in contrast to patterns in protected areas, where variation in accumulated rainfall and the length of the dry season influence the annual area burnt. Global models which assume strong links between fire and climate need to be re‐assessed in systems with high human impact.  相似文献

Nitrogen assimilation was studied in the deciduous, perennial climber Clematis vitalba. When solely supplied with NO3 in a hydroponic system, growth and N-assimilation characteristics were similar to those reported for a range of other species. When solely supplied with NH4+, however, nitrate reductase (NR) activity dramatically increased in shoot tissue, and particularly leaf tissue, to up to three times the maximum level achieved in NO3 supplied plants. NO3 was not detected in plant material that had been solely supplied with NH4+, there was no NO3 contamination of the hydroponic system, and the NH4+-induced activity did not occur in tobacco or barley grown under similar conditions. Western Blot analysis revealed that the induction of NR activity, either by NO3 or NH4+, was matched by NR and nitrite reductase protein synthesis, but this was not the case for the ammonium assimilation enzyme glutamine synthetase. Exposure of leaf disks to N revealed that NO3 assimilation was induced in leaves directly by NO3 and NH4+ but not glutamine. Our results suggest that the NH4+-induced potential for NO3 assimilation occurs when externally sourced NH4+ is assimilated in the absence of any NO3 assimilation. These data show that the potential for nitrate assimilation in C. vitalba is induced by a nitrogenous compound in the absence of its substrate and suggest that NO3 assimilation in C. vitalba may have a significant role beyond the supply of reduced N for growth.  相似文献

Fish optic nerve fibres quickly regenerate after injury, but the onset of remyelination is delayed until they reach the brain. This recapitulates the timetable of CNS myelinogenesis during development in vertebrate animals generally, and we have used the regenerating fish optic nerve to obtain evidence that it is the axons, not the myelinating glial cells, that determine when myelin formation begins. In fish, the site of an optic nerve injury becomes remyelinated by ectopic Schwann cells of unknown origin. We allowed these cells to become established and then used them as reporters to indicate the time course of pro-myelin signalling during a further round of axonal outgrowth following a second upstream lesion. Unlike in the mammalian PNS, the ectopic Schwann cells failed to respond to axotomy and to the initial outgrowth of new optic axons. They only began to divide after the axons had reached the brain. Shortly afterwards, small numbers of Schwann cells began to leave the dividing pool and form myelin sheaths. More followed gradually, so that by 3 months remyelination was almost completed and few dividing cells were left. Moreover, remyelination occurred synchronously throughout the optic nerve, with the same time course in the pre-existing Schwann cells, the new ones that colonised the second injury, and the CNS oligodendrocytes elsewhere. The optic axons are the only common structures that could synchronise myelin formation in these disparate glial populations. The responses of the ectopic Schwann cells suggest that they are controlled by the regenerating optic axons in two consecutive steps. First, they begin to proliferate when the growing axons reach the brain. Second, they leave the cell cycle to differentiate individually at widely different times during the ensuing 2 months, during the critical period when the initial rough pattern of axon terminals in the optic tectum becomes refined into an accurate map. We suggest that each axon signals individually for myelin ensheathment once it completes this process.  相似文献
