The phosphatidylserine receptor (PSR) was originally described as the putative receptor for phosphatidylserine, which is displayed on the outer membrane leaflet of apoptotic cells as a so-called 'eat me' signal. Since then, contradictory findings about this protein have been published. A common characteristic of all PSR loss-of-function experiments in vertebrates has been neonatal lethality accompanied by severe developmental defects. However, impairment of phagocytosis has only been detected in some of these experiments. Furthermore, several groups have shown that PSR localizes to the nucleus. Structural in silico analysis of PSR indicates that it has a JumonjiC domain, and the molecular features characteristic of Fe(II)-dependent and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent oxygenases. Background
The phylogenetic tree of Galliformes (gamebirds, including megapodes, currassows, guinea fowl, New and Old World quails, chicken, pheasants, grouse, and turkeys) has been considerably remodeled over the last decades as new data and analytical methods became available. Analyzing presence/absence patterns of retroposed elements avoids the problems of homoplastic characters inherent in other methodologies. In gamebirds, chicken repeats 1 (CR1) are the most prevalent retroposed elements, but little is known about the activity of their various subtypes over time. Ascertaining the fixation patterns of CR1 elements would help unravel the phylogeny of gamebirds and other poorly resolved avian clades. 相似文献993.

There has been considerable work on the relationships between nutrition and the immune response, particularly on studies that have focused on adaptive responses. There is increasing recognition of the importance of innate immunity in host protection and initiation of cytokine networks. In this study, we examined the effect of select cocoa flavanols and procyanidins on innate responses in vitro. Peripheral blood mono-nuclear cells (PBMCs), as well as purified monocytes and CD4 and CD8 T cells, were isolated from healthy volunteers and cultured in the presence of cocoa flavanol fractions that differ from another by the degree of flavanol polymerization: short-chain flavanol fraction (SCFF), monomers to pentamers; and long-chain flavanol fraction (LCFF), hexamers to decamers. Parallel investigations were also done with highly purified flavanol monomers and procyanidin dimers. The isolated cells were then challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with quantitation of activation using CD69 and CD83 expression and analysis of secreted tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-1beta, IL-6, IL-10, and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF). The chain length of flavanol fractions had a significant effect on cytokine release from both unstimulated and LPS-stimulated PBMCs. For example, there was a striking increase of LPS-induced synthesis of IL-1beta, IL-6, IL-10, and TNF-alpha in the presence of LCFF. LCFF and SCFF, in the absence of LPS, stimulated the production of GM-CSF. In addition, LCFF and SCFF increased expression of the B cell markers CD69 and CD83. There were also unique differential responses in the mononuclear cell populations studied. Signal transduction mediated by the single yeast isozyme of protein kinase C (Pkc1p) is essential for the maintenance of cellular integrity in this model eukaryote. The past few years have seen a dramatic increase in our knowledge of the upstream regulatory factors that modulate Pkc1p activity (e.g. Tor2p, Rom1p, Rom2p, Rho1p, Slg1p, Mid2p) and of the downstream targets of the MAP kinase cascade triggered by it (e.g. Rlm1p, SBF complex). The reasons for the well-known significantly different behaviour of the anaerobic, gram-negative, ethanologenic bacterium
Zymomonas mobilis during growth on fructose (i.e. decreased growth and ethanol yields, increased by-product formation) as compared to that
on its second natural substrate, glucose, have remained unexplained. A xylose-fermenting recombinant strain of Z. mobilis that was recently constructed in our laboratory also unexpectedly displayed an increased formation of by-products and a strongly
reduced growth rate as compared to the parent strain. Therefore, a comprehensive study employing recently developed NMR-based
methods for the in vivo analysis of intracellular phosphorylated pool sizes and metabolic fluxes was undertaken to enable
a global characterization of the intracellular metabolic state of Z. mobilis during growth on 13C-labelled glucose, fructose and xylose in defined continuous cultures. The 13C-NMR flux analysis indicated that ribose 5-phosphate is synthesized via the nonoxidative pentose phosphate pathway in Z. mobilis, and it identified a metabolic bottleneck in the recombinant xylose-fermenting Z. mobilis strain at the level of heterologous xylulokinase. The 31P-NMR analyses revealed a global alteration of the levels of intracellular phosphorylated metabolites during growth on fructose
as compared to that on glucose. The results suggest that this is primarily caused by an elevated concentration of intracellular
fructose 6-phosphate.

Beetles of the genus Melanophila are able to detect infrared radiation by using specialized sensilla in their metathoracic pit organs. We describe the afferent projections of the infrared-sensitive neurons in the central nervous system. The axons primarily terminate in the central neuropil of the fused second thoracic ganglia where they establish putative contacts with ascending interneurons. Only a few collaterals appear to be involved in local (uniganglionic) circuits. About half of the neurons send their axons further anterior to the prothoracic ganglion. A subset of these ascend to the subesophageal ganglion, and about 10% project to the brain. Anatomical similarities suggest that the infrared-sensitive neurons are derived from neurons supplying mechanosensory sensilla. The arborization pattern of the infrared afferents suggests that infrared information is processed and integrated upstream from the thoracic ganglia. 相似文献
