The anatomy and ultrastructure of seed envelopes of a New Caledonian endemic Austrotaxus spicata were examined for the first time. The systematic position and phylogenetic relations of Austrotaxus were analysed in light of these data. The structure of aril and spermoderm were investigated to demonstrate the similarities with Phyllocladus as well as with Taxus and Pseudotaxus . On the basis of all female reproductive organ characters, Austrotaxus appeared to be fairly isolated and its placing in the independent family Austrotaxaceae was confirmed from the standpoint of comparative anatomy of the seed coat. Taking into consideration that the heterobathmy of features can be the most distinctively traced in the structure of reproductive organs, evaluating the extent of evolutionary advancement of Austrotaxus seems to be rather difficult. Bovine seminal ribonuclease (BS-RNase), a dimeric homologue of RNase A, cleaves both single- and double-stranded RNA and inhibits the growth of tumor cells. Its catalytic activity against double-stranded RNA, either homopolymeric ([3H]polyA/polyU) or mixed sequence, is enhanced by bovine or human recombinant interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma). Activation is seen with as little as 4-10 interferon units per assay. Enhancing the degradation of double-stranded RNA, an intermediate in the growth cycle of many viruses, could contribute to IFN-gamma's ability to control cell growth and induce an antiviral state.  相似文献

Summary Streptococcus bovis 2B formed bright red cell clumps in glucose-limited defined medium under certain nonsteady state growth conditions. Scanning electron micrographs showed that clumped cells were more rounded than those from complex medium. Clumped cells appeared to be bound to one another at the cell surface and there was no sign of a polysaccharide matrix. Freeze fractured cells showed that the inner membrane particle distribution was different in the clumped cells from fast growing cells in complex or defined medium. Clumping is potentially a mechanism to decrease transport by reducing the cell surface area. It appears to be a nonsteady state phenomenon, occurring in situations leading to unbalanced growth.  相似文献

Gamogony of Theileria ovis Rodhain occurs within the gut of nymphs of the tick Rhipicephalus evertsi evertsi Neumann. After molting, spherical and ovoid parasites are found within the intestinal cells of the ticks. These stages are thought to be zygotes, because they undergo a transformation process leading ultimately (in 3 days) to the formation of a motile stage, the kinete, the fine structure of which is very similar to that of the ookinetes of the hemosporidia. The kinete leaves the gut cells of the tick and penetrates the salivary gland cells where it produces infective stages (the sporozoites). These stages may be transmitted to sheep during the next blood meal of the tick. The developmental processes of T. ovis are compared to those of Hemosporina.  相似文献

1. Community assembly is affected by four processes: dispersal, filtering effects (selection), ecological drift and evolution. The role of filtering relative to dispersal and drift should decline with patch size, hampering possibilities to predict which organisms will be observed within small‐sized patches. However, vegetation structure is known to have a marked impact on species assemblages, and plant quality may act as a biotic filter. This challenges the assumption of unpredictable species assemblages in small‐sized vegetation patches. 2. Using 32 stands of five shrub species in south‐west Finland, this study investigated whether biotic filtering effects caused by patch‐forming plants are strong enough to overcome the mixing of mobile arthropod assemblages across small patches. 3. Stochastic variation did not hide the signals of biotic filtering and dispersal in the small shrub patches. Habitat richness around the patches explained a three times larger share of variation in the species composition than did the identity of the patch‐forming plant, but it had less effect on the abundance of arthropods. A radius of 50–100 m around a patch explained the species composition best. 4. Abundance patterns varied between the feeding guilds; the patch‐forming shrub influenced the abundances of detritivores and leaf‐feeding herbivores, whereas the abundances of flower‐visiting herbivores appeared to track the flowering phenology of the plants. Shrub identity had little effect on omnivores or predators. Predator abundances were correlated with the abundance of potential prey. 5. The results of this study suggest that community composition within a vegetation patch may be predictable even if dispersal overrides local filtering effects, as suggested by the mass‐effects paradigm.  相似文献

Genomic clones spanning the entire cow beta-globin gene locus have been isolated and characterized. These clones demonstrate that the linkage of embryonic-like (epsilon) genes and pseudogenes (psi) to the previously described fetal (gamma) and adult (beta) genes is as follows: 5'-epsilon 3-epsilon 4-psi 3-beta-epsilon 1-epsilon 2-psi 1- psi 2-gamma-3'. Present data indicate that, like that of the goat, the fetal and adult genes arose via block duplication of an ancestral four- gene set: epsilon-epsilon-psi-beta. This duplication event preceded the divergence of cows and goats, which occurred greater than or equal to 18-20 Myr ago. However, cows do not have the additional four-gene block containing a preadult/stress globin gene (beta C). Furthermore, the cow fetal cluster contains an extra beta-like pseudogene, which apparently arose by a small-scale duplication. The fixation of this duplication may indicate a possible evolutionary role for pseudogenes.   相似文献

Decomposing proteins into "molegos," building blocks that are conserved in sequence and 3D-structure, can identify functional elements. To demonstrate the specificity of the decomposition method, the PCPMer program suite was used to numerically define physical chemical property motifs corresponding to the molegos that make up the metal-containing active sites of three distinct enzyme families, from the dimetallic phosphatases, DNase 1 related nucleases/phosphatases, and dioxygenases. All three superfamilies bind metal ions in a beta-strand core region but differ in the number and type of ions needed for activity. The motifs were then used to automatically identify proteins in the ASTRAL40 database that contained similar motifs. The proteins with the highest PCPMer score in the database were primarily metal-binding enzymes that were related in function to those in the alignment used to generate the PCPMer motif lists. The proteins that contained motifs similar to the dioxygenases differed from those found with PCP-motifs for phosphatases and nucleases. Relatively few metal-binding enzymes were detected when the search was done with PCP-motifs defined for interleukin-1 related proteins, which have a beta-strand core but do not bind metal ions. While the box architecture was constant in each superfamily, the specificity for the metal ion preferred for enzymatic activity is determined by the pattern of carbonyl, hydroxyl or imadazole groups in key positions in the molegos. These results have implications for the design of metal-binding enzymes, and illustrate the ability of the PCPMer approach to distinguish, at the sequence level, structural and functional elements.  相似文献

Observations of moray eel (Muraenidae) distribution made on a Caribbean coral reef are discussed in the context of long term population trends. Observations of eel distribution made using SCUBA during 1978, 1979–1980, and 1984 are compared and related to the occurrence of a hurricane in 1979. An estimate of the mean standing stock of moray eels is presented. The degree of site attachment is discussed for spotted morays (Gymnothorax moringa) and goldentail morays (Muraena miliaris). The repeated non-aggressive association of moray eels with large aggregations of potential prey fishes is detailed.  相似文献
