In social systems characterized by a high degree of fission-fusion dynamics, members of a large community are rarely all together, spending most of their time in smaller subgroups with flexible membership. Although fissioning into smaller subgroups is believed to reduce conflict among community members, fusions may create conflict among individuals from joining subgroups. Here, we present evidence for aggressive escalation at fusion and its mitigation by the use of embraces in wild spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi). Our findings provide the first systematic evidence for conflict management at fusion and may have implications for the function of human greetings.  相似文献

AIMS: Experiments were designed to detect quorum-sensing signals produced by Clostridium botulinum. METHODS AND RESULTS: Clostridium botulinum 56A cell-free supernatants obtained at the end of lag phase, the mid-exponential phase and early stationary phase of growth were assayed for bioluminescence in the Vibrio harveyi quorum-sensing assay system. Twelve and 16-h culture supernatants induced bioluminescence in the auto-inducer 2 (AI-2) but not the auto-inducer 1 (AI-1) assay. Intra-species quorum sensing was also assayed as the ability of the supernatants to promote spore germination and outgrowth in a microtitre plate system. Spore populations exposed to C. botulinum supernatant from the end of lag phase became positive for growth sooner than controls. CONCLUSIONS: The influence of cell-free supernatant on ungerminated spores and detection of bioluminescence in the AI-2 assay are evidence for a signalling molecule(s) and provide a first step in characterizing C. botulinum quorum sensing. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study suggests that spores do not behave independently of each other and may explain the inocula size effects observed in challenge studies. Whether AI-2 production in C. botulinum serves as an inter-species signal or as a detoxification mechanism remains to be determined.  相似文献

Eryngium regnellii Malme belongs to the largest genera in the Apiaceae family, with 250 species worldwide and 65 represented in South America. It is a herbaceous species typical of hill plant communities, which, along with remnant grassland patches, are the most relevant natural habitats for the maintenance of diversity in the Southern Pampas. Eryngium regnellii is key to the maintenance of pollination mutualisms, being a generalist (displaying a diverse assemblage of pollinators) and ubiquitous species (present in all studied sierras). However, fragmentation of the Pampean landscape due to agricultural intensification has led to the loss of natural environments. Therefore, the reintroduction of E. regnellii in strategic places would facilitate the occurrence of wild pollinators, while favoring pollination services in the agroecosystem. The germination requirements of E. regnellii were studied because a better knowledge of the reproductive biology of this species would provide information relevant to its reproduction and reintroduction into degraded areas. Germination percentages and mean time to germination were evaluated, using one control and two pre-germination treatments: chemical scarification with sulfuric acid, and mechanical scarification with sand paper. Chemical scarified seeds did not germinate. Mechanically scarified and control seed groups showed no significant differences either in germination percentages (49% and 59% respectively) or in mean germination time (13 and 14 days, respectively). Results indicate that E. regnellii shows no physical dormancy, and does not require specific pre-germination treatments for germination under the studied laboratory conditions. The high germination capacity of E. regnellii, along with its ecological attributes, make it a potential species for restoring plant-pollinator interactions in the fragmented landscapes of the Southern Pampas.  相似文献

The ability of L-sorbose to stimulate cellulase production In shake flask culture of Trichoderma reesei was examined in mineral salts media (initial pH 5.0) containing either 1.0% D-xylose, 1.0% cellulose, and/or 0.1, 0.3, or 0.5% L-sorbose. When sorbose was the only carbon source, growth was limited, little substrate was utilized, pH increased, and cellulase activity was not apparent. The other carbon sources promoted good growth, pH dropped sharply to 2.5-3.0, substrate was utilized rapidly, and cellulase activity was detected. After three weeks of fermentation, twice as much cellulase activity was detected in the medium containing only cellulose as the carbon source, as compared to xylose as the carbon source. Cellulase activity was higher when media contained xylose supplemented with sorbose compared to xylose as the only carbon source. At 0.3 and 0.5% levels of sorbose supplementation of xylose-based media, cellulase activity was similar to that in cellulose-based media.  相似文献

The solid state structures of [Ni(1)2][NO3]2 · 2MeOH · 2H2O, [Fe(1)2][ClO4]2 · 2MeOH · 0.5H2O, [Ru(1)2][PF6]2 and [Ru(1)2][PF6][NO3] (1 = 4′-(4-pyridyl)-2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine) are presented and the structural variation observed for the {M(1)2}2+ unit is discussed. Protonation of the pendant pyridine group in [Ru(1)2]2+ leads to the formation of a hydrogen-bonded, one-dimensional polymer [{Ru(1)(H1)}n]3n+ exemplifed by the solid-state structure of [{Ru(1)(H1)}{Fe(NCS)6} · 1.25H2O]n.  相似文献
