Sex pheromone perception in male pine sawflies,Neodiprion sertifer (Hymenoptera; Diprionidae)

Summary Electroantennographic and single sensillum recordings were performed on male pine sawfly, Neodiprion sertifer, antennae. Responses to the sex pheromone component (2S, 3S, 7S)- 3,7-dimethyl-2-pentadecenyl (diprionyl) acetate (SSS:OAc), to the behavioral inhibitor (2S, 3R, 7R)-diprionyl acetate (SRR:OAc), to the six other enantiomers of diprionyl acetate, and to the biosynthetic precursor diprionol were recorded. Responses to trans-perillenal, a monoterpene identified in female gland extracts and to (2S, 3S, 7S)-diprionyl propionate (SSS:OPr), a field attractant for N. sertifer and some related sawfly species were also recorded.EAG recordings demonstrated a high antennal sensitivity to SSS:OAc and to SSS:OPr. A somewhat lower response was elicited by SRR:OAc.Single sensillum recordings revealed 8–12 different cells firing in each sensillum, corresponding to the number of cells observed in earlier morphological investigations. Out of these cells all, except one, responded to SSS:OAc and to SSS:OPr. No differences in the response to the two components could be observed. The largest amplitude cell in each sensillum was specifically tuned to the behavioral antagonist, SRR:OAc. The pheromone perception system encountered in male pine sawflies thus differs clearly from that observed in moths.Abbreviation EAG electroantennogram - OAc acetate - OPr propionate     

Demonstration of correlations between the 8 and 10 kHz atmospherics and the inflammatory reaction of rats after carrageenan injection

Between the mean daily density of 28 kHz atmospherics and the onset of epileptic fits there is a highly significant correlation coefficient (r) of 0.30; there is a negative coefficient of –0.20 between the fits and the mean daily density of 10 kHz atmospherics. The onset of heart infarction is correlated with 28 kHz atmospherics (r=0.15). Furthermore, we have discovered that sudden deafness is also correlated with certain configurations of atmospherics. In this paper we report the following correlation coefficients between the inflammatory reaction of rats to a carrageenan injection (rci) into a hind paw and the mean daily pulse rate of atmospherics of the same day:r=0.49 for the 8 kHz atmospherics (P<0.02) andr=0.44 for the 10 kHz atmospherics (P<0.04). The correlations between rci reaction and other atmospherics (12 and 28 kHz) are smaller and not significant. By the method of multiple linear regression we found a multipleR=0.54 between rci reaction and the 8 and 10 kHz atmospherics (the regression function for the rci reaction is 0.15+0.004×8 kHz+0.002×10 kHz,P<0.05).     

Correlation between low CSA plasma concentration and severity of acute GvHD in bone marrow transplantation

Between 1982 and 1986 51 patients were treated with ciclosporin a (CSA) to prevent graft versus host disease (GvHD) after bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Major side effects of the drug were tremor, hypertension, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Acute GvHD 0 degree to II degree occurred in 80% of our patients, and GvHD III degree and IV degree in 20% despite the use of CSA. Two to four days before the onset of GvHD, CSA serum levels were significantly lower on the average in patients who developed GvHD III degree and IV degree compared to the others. Our data indicate that plasma CSA concentrations higher than 250 ng/ml should be achieved to reduce the severity of GvHD after BMT.     

Pharmacokinetics of 19-nortestosterone esters in normal men

A reliable method for the isolation of 19-nortestosterone (NT), testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and quantitation of the individual steroids by radioimmunoassays is described. The method was used to measure serum concentrations of NT, T and DHT in a pharmacokinetic study and in a clinical trial for male fertility control. Following intramuscular injection of either 50 mg 19-nortestosterone-3-(p-hexoxyphenyl)-propionate (NP) or 50 mg 19-nortestosterone-decanoate (ND) serum NT increased rapidly to maximal concentrations of 4.6 +/- 3.2 and 2.0 +/- 1.3 nmol/l (+/-SD), respectively, in the 6 volunteers. The half-life time was 8 days for ND and 21 days for NP. Based on these findings a clinical trial with NP was performed. NP was given to 5 healthy men in doses of 100 mg/week for the first 3 weeks followed by 200 mg/week for 10 further weeks. Serum NT levels increased gradually and maximal concentrations were reached in the 13th treatment week (20.2 +/- 3.4 nmol/l). Measurable amounts of NT were detectable for 19 weeks after the last injection. The study shows that NT accumulates under this treatment regime and wider spacing of the injection intervals may be possible in future trials.     

NADPH-specific and NADH-specific xylose reduction is catalyzed by two separate enzymes in Pachysolen tannophilus

Summary Pachysolen tannophilus contains — in addition to an NADPH-linked xylose reductase — a separate NADH-linked one, in this respect differing from the yeast Pichia stipitis. Both enzyme proteins can conveniently be separated from each other by either ion exchange chromatography or chromatofocusing.     

Conversion of cellulose into fungal cell mass in solid state culture

Summary To satisfy the demand for simple production technology (simple and cheap reactor, cheap recovery and finishing), solid state cultivations were carried out with pretreated straw in a simple fixed bed reactor under nonsterile conditions.The results of these investigations were compared with those evaluated in a stirred tank reactor. The same cell mass fractions were obtained in both reactors. Implementation of periodic acid-thiosemicarbazide-silver proteinate staining for ultrastructural assessment of muscle glycogen utilization during exercise

Summary Distribution of glycogen particles in semithin and ultrathin sections of biopsy samples from human muscles subjected to either short- or long-term running were investigated using PAS and Periodic Acid-ThioSemiCarbazide-Silver Proteinate (PA-TSC-SP) staining methods. Glycogen particles were predominantly found immediately under the sarcolemma or aligned along the myofibrillar Iband. After long-term exhaustive exercise type-1 fibers with a few or no glycogen particles in the core of the fibers were frequently observed. The subsarcolemmal glycogen stores of these depleted type-1 fibers were about three times as large as after exhaustive short-time exercise. Another indication of utilization of subsarcolemmal glycogen stores during anaerobic exercise was that many particles displayed a pale, rudimentary shape. This observation suggests fragmental metabolization of glycogen. Thus, depending on type of exercise and type of fiber differential and sequential glycogen utilization patterns can be observed.     

Moments and order statistics of extinction times in multitype branching processes and their relation to random selection models

We investigate the circumstances under which the moments of the order statistics of the extinction times of a set of independent branching processes exist. This extends a result of Schuster and Sigmund,Bull. math. Biol. 46, 11–17, 1984, which was found in a special random selection model. Furthermore we discussed existence of the expectation of extinction times of multitype branching processes and extend well known results for irreducible processes to the reducible case.

Early developmental stages of theAnemonia germ are characterized by asynchronously dividing nuclei and an extreme delay of blastomere differentiation. The nuclei migrate to the periphery, whereas nutritive substances remain in the interior. Following this stage, the appearance of cell boundaries results in the formation of the blastoderm and the simultaneous division of the yolk into many fragments. Most of them are exclusively filled with reserve material; only very few contain zooxanthellae or nuclei. On the embryo's surface, conically shaped bundles of long microvilli are obvious. They appear to be less regularly arranged than the spines of oocytes before insemination. Pigment granules that have originated from fusing Golgi vesicles are crowded peripherally in the blastoderm cells. In the nucleoplasm single annulate lamellae that seem to be cut off from the nuclear envelope can frequently be found. There is no further cellular differentiation until gastrulation is completed. Though yolk-containing cellular fragments occupy nearly the whole blastocoel, entoderm formation occurs by invagination. Ultrastructural observations provide evidence of the existence of interstices between entoderm cells that allow all nutritive substances to pass gradually into the gastric cavity. In the region of the blastoporus there are cellular processes enveloping reserve material. Presumably, these observations indicate a so-called filtration of nutritive yolk (Korschelt & Heider, 1909) that might represent an additional mode for the transfer of yolk-containing cellular fragments from blastocoel into gastrocoel.
