Purpose

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is increasingly acknowledged as a potent global warming abatement option. It is demonstrated that whilst the global warming potential (GWP) decreases, the other environmental impact category potentials often increase in a life cycle perspective. Despite this, only a few studies clearly address this trade-off or use weighting to compare the positive and negative effects of CCS. The present life cycle assessment (LCA) study focuses, therefore, on presenting several environmental indicators and on weighting the inventory results in order to ascertain which of the analysed systems is to be preferred.

Method

The case studied is a projected gas power plant at Tjeldbergodden (Norway), where it is proposed to include post-combustion CCS. Four main scenarios have been analysed, one without and three with CCS. The principal variation between the CCS scenarios is that the steam required for amine regeneration is produced in three different ways: in a separate gas fuelled steam boiler; in a separate biomass fuelled steam boiler; and delivered from the low-pressure steam turbine in the power plant. Design information and technical specifications have been available. The study has used LCA methodology based on the ISO standard 14044, SimaPro 7.3.2.4 software and the Ecoinvent 2.0 database. The functional unit is 1?TWh electricity delivered to the grid. The following environmental impact categories have been included: GWP, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) and cumulative energy demand (CED). Three weighting methods have been used to ascertain the robustness of the weighting results: ReCiPe, EPS 2000 and IMPACT 2002+.

Results and discussion

The characterisation results show that the CCS scenarios have reduced impacts only in the case of GWP. The weighting demonstrates that in the ReCiPe model, climate change is strongly in focus, whilst in EPS 2000, human health and depletion of reserves are dominant. Climate change is also an important factor in IMPACT 2002+, together with effects on human health (respiratory inorganics). The process integration scenario has, however, the best result for all three weighting models. This contrasts with the results from the impact analysis where four of the five analysed impact categories rated the CCS-3 scenario as worse than the reference scenario. One possible option for improving the biofuel boiler scenario is to capture the CO2 from the combustion of biomass in the external steam boiler. This would not, in all probability, affect the acidification, eutrophication, POCP and CED to any significant degree, but the GWP, and hence the ReCiPe and the IMPACT 2002+, weighting results could be expected to improve.

Conclusions

The weighting exercise has identified toxicity as a concern with regard to the biofuel boiler scenarios (CCS-2) and human health issues as having importance for the CCS-3 scenario. It would seem that process integration is a better CCS option than that of CCS providing steam from a separate steam boiler (without CCS), even where this boiler is biomass-fuelled. Any future analysis should focus both on the process integration scenario and the biofuel boiler scenario with CCS of biological CO2.  相似文献

From the results of two-dimensional isoelectric focusing, SDS-gel electrophoresis and from immunochemical data it became evident that lectin I and lectin II (corresponding to fractions Geodia I and Geodia II isolated on immobilized lactose) from the sponge Geodia cydonium are apparently identical mixtures of several isolectins, the pI values of their subunits ranging, in contrast to our previous report, from 4.8–7.5. The hypothetical concept of sugar-mediated, specific lectin-lectin interactions (self-recognition) could not be verified by binding of FITC-labelled isolectins (Geodia I) to the lectin subunits, which had been purified by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and blotted onto nitrocellulose membranes. The concept should also be dismissed on the basis of carbohydrate analyses revealing in contradiction with previous results the exclusive presence of alkali-labile bound tetraglucose on the purified isolectins (1 mol/mol lectin protein). The combining site of the isolectins was shown by a quantitative microprecipitation inhibition assay to be most complementar to oligosaccharides of the β-galactoside series and to interact specifically with particular structural elements of the subterminal sugar(s). Carbohydrates of the anti aggregation receptor, which are assumed to represent the functional ligand of the Geodia-isolectins in vivo, could be demonstrated to have a high affinity for the lectin combining site, exceeding that of the best disaccharide inhibitor, lactose, by five orders of magnitude. A preliminary chemical characterization of the receptor carbohydrate revealed that D-galactose and D-glucose (each approx. 200 mol/mol receptor) are organized in an oligosaccharide, which could be cleaved from the protein by trifluoroacetolysis.  相似文献

The function of dopamine D(3) receptors present in the striatum has remained elusive. In the present study evidence is provided for the existence of dopamine D(1)-D(3) receptor heteromers and for an intramembrane D(1)-D(3) receptor cross-talk in living cells and in the striatum. The formation of D(1)-D(3) receptor heteromers was demonstrated by fluorescence resonance energy transfer and bioluminescence resonance energy transfer techniques in transfected mammalian cells. In membrane preparations from these cells, a synergistic D(1)-D(3) intramembrane receptor-receptor interaction was observed, by which D(3) receptor stimulation enhances D(1) receptor agonist affinity, indicating that the D(1)-D(3) intramembrane receptor-receptor interaction is a biochemical characteristic of the D(1)-D(3) receptor heteromer. The same biochemical characteristic was also observed in membrane preparations from brain striatum, demonstrating the striatal co-localization and heteromerization of D(1) and D(3) receptors. According to the synergistic D(1)-D(3) intramembrane receptor-receptor interaction, experiments in reserpinized mice showed that D(3) receptor stimulation potentiates D(1) receptor-mediated behavioral effects by a different mechanism than D(2) receptor stimulation. The present study shows that a main functional significance of the D(3) receptor is to obtain a stronger dopaminergic response in the striatal neurons that co-express the two receptors.  相似文献

A cDNA clone representing a member of a novel class of cell wall proteins was isolated from tobacco plants. We have designated this protein NtTLRP for tyrosine- and lysine-rich protein. It is structurally related to the previously identified TLRP from tomato plants, sharing a high amino-acid sequence similarity at the C-terminal region. This region contains what appears to be a novel peptide motif which we call CD for cysteine-rich domain, and which is common to several other cell-wall proteins. By using a functional test in transgenic plants, we demonstrate that the presence of the CD domain is per se sufficient to cross-link previously soluble proteins to the cell wall. We present evidence that NtTLRP is cross-linked and specifically localizes to the cell wall of lignified cells. The highly localized deposition of NtTLRP in these cells indicates that this class of cell-wall proteins may have a specialized function in the formation of xylem tissue.  相似文献

Sustainable development can only be achieved if industry adoptsboth product related and organisation related environmental management tools, such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Management Systems (EMS). In Japan, EMS (ISO 14001) is more widely applied than LCA (ISO 14040). Therefore,one means by which Japanese industries could be motivated to adopt and use LCA is to relate LCA-activities to the policies and instruments of ISO 14001. The potential of such a comprehensive approach was analysed by a survey of 270 Japanese enterprises (response rate 45%). The results indicate that 19% of the responding representatives had responsibilities for both LCA and EMS, while the remaining only work in one of both fields. A statement in the company’s/ plant’s Environmental Policy of ISO 14001, stating that LCA is to be used as part of the EMS, was found in 42% of all companies. A surprising number (39%) either already use, or plan to use, LCA and EMS as combinated/integrated tools. A strong argument for the establishment of a comprehensive approach can be seen in the perception of the usefulness of LCA, which was rated significantly higher in companies that acknowledged the complementary potential of LCA and EMS.  相似文献

We present the nucleotide sequence of the cell type specific prespore gene EB4 which encodes a protein containing a hydrophobic leader sequence and two distinct domains of amino acid repeats. By RNase protection experiments we have determined the genomic organization of the gene which differs substantially from the previously published data. An antibody directed against one of the repeat structures (hexamer repeat) specifically reacts with a developmentally regulated antigen of 58 kd. Gene disruption transformants were obtained by transformation with a genomic DNA fragment. The transformants express a 3' truncated mRNA and do not react with the anti-hexamer antibody. So far, we could not detect any phenotypic aberrations in the transformed cell line.  相似文献
