Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-borne disease of increasing importance in northeastern Brazil. It is known that sandflies, which spread the causative parasites, have weather-dependent population dynamics. Routinely-gathered weather data may be useful for anticipating disease risk and planning interventions.
Methodology/Principal Findings
We fit time series models using meteorological covariates to predict CL cases in a rural region of Bahía, Brazil from 1994 to 2004. We used the models to forecast CL cases for the period 2005 to 2008. Models accounting for meteorological predictors reduced mean squared error in one, two, and three month-ahead forecasts by up to 16% relative to forecasts from a null model accounting only for temporal autocorrelation.
Significance
These outcomes suggest CL risk in northeastern Brazil might be partially dependent on weather. Responses to forecasted CL epidemics may include bolstering clinical capacity and disease surveillance in at-risk areas. Ecological mechanisms by which weather influences CL risk merit future research attention as public health intervention targets. 相似文献
The roles of platelet function, plasma lipids and nitric oxide (NO) were studied in adolescent patients with essential hypertension (JEHT group), with chronic renal failure (CRF) associated with hypertension (CRFH group), and CRF patients with normal blood pressure (CRF group), as compared with normal controls (cont. group). Platelet aggregation and the thromboxane B(2)(TxB(2)) level were significantly higher in the JEHT and CRFH groups as compared with the cont. group, whereas they were significantly lower in the CRF group. On the other hand, the platelet cAMP level was significantly lower in the JEHT and CRFH groups than in the cont. group. The plasma NO level was significantly higher only in the JEHT as compared with the cont. group (120 +/- 39 and 89 +/- 21 microM, respectively). The plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL cholesterol concentrations were normal in the JEHT group, but high in the CRF and CRFH group, the HDL cholesterol level was lower in the CRF and CRFH groups as compared with the cont. and JEHT groups. There was a positive correlation between the platelet aggregation and the TxB(2)level and between the BP and the platelet aggregation. In conclusion, hyperlipidaemia is commonly present in uraemia with haemodialysis, but is not specific for hypertension in children, while an increased platelet function is frequently associated with hypertension. The increased NO level might play a compensatory role in JEHT. 相似文献
Plant essential oils are potential sources of insecticidal compounds, but have rarely been explored for their effect on termites. In the present study, we assessed the chemical composition of essential oils of Lippia sidoides Cham. (pepper‐rosmarin; Verbenaceae) and Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. (patchouli; Lamiacaeae) and evaluated their toxicity, behavioral impairment, and repellence to termite species of the genera Amitermes and Microcerotermes (Isoptera: Termitidae: Termitinae). The main components of essential oils of L. sidoides and P. cablin were thymol (44.6%) and patchouli alcohol (36.6%), respectively. The essential oil of P. cablin was most potent against Amitermes cf. amifer Silvestri and had the lowest LD50 (0.63 μg mg?1). There was no difference in toxicity for Microcerotermes indistinctus Mathews between the essential oils of L. sidoides (LD50 = 1.49 μg mg?1) and P. cablin (LD50 = 1.67 μg mg?1). Pogostemon cablin essential oil was the most toxic to M. indistinctus (LC50 = 0.32 μl ml?1) and A. cf. amifer (LC50 = 0.29 μl ml?1). The essential oils analyzed exhibited high toxicity and repellence to the termites, in addition to reducing behavioral interactions among individuals, thus constituting potential termiticides. 相似文献
Gunshot wounds require surgeons to decide whether to remove or leave bullet fragments in the body. Surgeons also decide how to follow up with patients who have lead fragments retained in their body. Current literature recommends to remove only intra-articular fragments without the need for a follow-up for patients with the metal retained. Therefore, this study investigates chronic lead toxicity for gunshot wounds.
Methods
The study was performed in the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, between 2013 and 2015. It was a case-control study that included 45 victims of gunshot lesions with metallic fragments retained for more than 6 months. The 45 controls were matched for gender, age, and race. We compared the lead blood levels and frequency of symptoms.
Results
The control group had average blood lead levels of 2.17 μg/dL (95% Confidence Interval [CI]; 1.71–2.63) and median 2.1 μg/dL. The case group had average values of 9.01 μg/dL (CI; 6.07–11.96) and median values of 6.5 μg/dL with p-values < = 0.001. The case group reported the following more frequently: irritancy, bad mood, headache, memory losses, daylight drowsiness, myalgia, weakness, abdominal pain, joint pain, trembling, tingling limbs. There was statistical significance for the differences of symptoms frequencies and for odds ratio between groups.
Conclusions
Although the mean lead levels found were lower than the current laboratory references, low levels have been associated with both rising morbidity and mortality. The WHO stated: “There is no known level of lead exposure that is considered safe”. In conclusion, this work showed that bullets retained in the body are not innocuous. There are impacts in the blood lead levels and symptoms related to it, even with few fragments, extra-articular located or existing with low blood lead levels. 相似文献
Rhynchocephalian lepidosaurs, though once widespread worldwide, are represented today only by the tuatara (Sphenodon) of New Zealand. After their apparent early Cretaceous extinction in Laurasia, they survived in southern continents. In South America, they are represented by different lineages of Late Cretaceous eupropalinal forms until their disappearance by the Cretaceous/Palaeogene (K/Pg) boundary. We describe here the only unambiguous Palaeogene rhynchocephalian from South America; this new taxon is a younger species of the otherwise Late Cretaceous genus Kawasphenodon. Phylogenetic analysis confirms the allocation of the genus to the clade Opisthodontia. The new form from the Palaeogene of Central Patagonia is much smaller than Kawasphenodon expectatus from the Late Cretaceous of Northern Patagonia. The new species shows that at least one group of rhynchocephalians not related to the extant Sphenodon survived in South America beyond the K/Pg extinction event. Furthermore, it adds to other trans-K/Pg ectotherm tetrapod taxa, suggesting that the end-Cretaceous extinction affected Patagonia more benignly than the Laurasian landmasses. 相似文献
Nitric oxide (NO) participates in neuronal lesions in the digestive form of Chagasdisease and the proximity of parasitised glial cells and neurons in damaged myentericganglia is a frequent finding. Glial cells have crucial roles in manyneuropathological situations and are potential sources of NO. Here, we investigateperipheral glial cell response to Trypanosoma cruzi infection toclarify the role of these cells in the neuronal lesion pathogenesis of Chagasdisease. We used primary glial cell cultures from superior cervical ganglion toinvestigate cell activation and NO production after T. cruziinfection or lipopolysaccharide (LPS) exposure in comparison to peritonealmacrophages. T. cruzi infection was greater in glial cells, despitesimilar levels of NO production in both cell types. Glial cells responded similarlyto T. cruzi and LPS, but were less responsive to LPS thanmacrophages were. Our observations contribute to the understanding of Chagas diseasepathogenesis, as based on the high susceptibility of autonomic glial cells toT. cruzi infection with subsequent NO production. Moreover, our findingswill facilitate future research into the immune responses and activation mechanismsof peripheral glial cells, which are important for understanding the paradoxicalresponses of this cell type in neuronal lesions and neuroprotection. 相似文献

The stingrays Potamotrygon amandae and Potamotrygon falkneri are nonnative species established in the Upper Paraná basin. Although they are widely distributed, few studies on their diets or respective metabolic responses exist. Therefore, the aim was to evaluate the dietary composition, trophic niche breadth and lipid/protein concentrations in muscle and hepatic tissues of these two species, as well as the interrelationships between them. The individuals were collected in two areas on the Upper Paraná River. The stomachs and samples of muscle and liver tissues were taken for analysis. A broad dietary spectrum was observed for both species, along with differences in dietary composition, with a higher consumption of detritus by P. amandae and Baetidae by P. falkneri. No differences were observed in the trophic niche breadth. Regarding the metabolic variables, differences were only found in the hepatic protein, with a higher content observed in P. falkneri. A significant positive correlation was observed between items of animal origin and detritus with muscle protein for this species. This shows that such feeding habits, which are characteristic of a generalist, influenced the metabolism of the species and possibly contributed to the successful adjustment of the species to new habitats in the Upper Paraná River.
