We investigated clonal traits in the dioecious herb Rumex acetosella to characterize sexual dimorphism in clonal forms and to correlate below-ground clonal patterns and above-ground ramet distributions. We recorded creeping root length, branching patterns, ramet and clump (caespitose ramets from the same position on the root) sprouting patterns, and biomass allocations in three females and males. We also estimated the patch size of flowering ramets within a quadrat. No sexual dimorphism was detected in the frequencies of branches and flowering ramets per root length. Male plants allocated proportionally more biomass to below-ground organs. Total root length did not differ between the sexes. Females sprouted more clumps with fewer flowering ramets per root length than males, which sprouted fewer clumps with more flowering ramets, which meant that clump sprouting patterns were phalanx-like in females and guerrilla-like in males. Flowering ramets were aggregately distributed in both females and males and patch sizes were similar between sexes, indicating that the spreader propagations were not found in the guerrilla-like males. We assumed that sexual dimorphism occurred in response to physiological integration for higher reproductive effort in females.  相似文献

1. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope ratios of termites (Isoptera) were examined in Darwin, northern Australia. It is suggested that the stable isotope technique, together with phylogenetics, is a useful tool to understand the evolution of functional groups in detritivores.
2. A high δ15N value was observed in the Termes-Capritermes branch of the subfamily Termitinae and the genus Amitermes , two distinct taxonomic groups that evolved from wood-feeding to soil-feeding in Australia. Among eight Termes-Capritermes branch species, only two species ( Xylochomitermes melvillensis and Ephelotermes melachoma ) were discernible as wood/soil interface feeders, the remaining six species analysed were soil-feeders, where the diet preference was identified by using δ15N of workers.
3. The Termes-Capritermes group in Australia contains both wood/soil interface feeders and soil-feeders, whereas wood/soil interface feeders in Cameroon are from the Termes-Capritermes branch while soil-feeders are from Cubitermes group. The result confirmed that soil-feeding forms evolved both in Australia and Africa, but from different phylogenetic groups.  相似文献

Normal thyroid cells from 25 individuals treated surgically for malignant or benign thyroid tumour were cultured in vitro and radiation induced cytotoxicity was studied. The mean lethal dose (Do), quasi-threshold (Dq), and extrapolation number (n) of survival curves of actively dividing thyroid cells assayed by colony formation were estimated to be 92.9 +/- 2.8 cGy (rad), 58.1 +/- 6.9 cGy and 2.0 +/- 0.1, respectively (average for 25 individuals +/- standard error). These results suggest that proliferating human thyroid cells are more sensitive to X-rays than most other nonhaematologic mammalian cells in similar assays. Cell survival was not significantly affected by sex, age, disease or exposure to atomic bomb radiation of the cell donor. However, the number of samples currently available is too small for definite conclusions in this regard.  相似文献

Epimorphin: a mesenchymal protein essential for epithelial morphogenesis.   总被引:20,自引:0,他引:20  
A novel 150 kd protein expressed on the surface of mesenchymal cells of mouse embryonic tissues was identified. A monoclonal antibody to this molecule inhibited various processes of epithelial morphogenesis, such as hair follicle growth and lung epithelial tubular formation, in organ cultures of these tissues. Sequence analysis of cDNA encoding this protein revealed that it had 289 amino acids with a hydrophobic stretch at the C-terminus. NIH 3T3 cells transfected with the cDNA of this protein expressed the exogenous 150 kd protein on their surface. When lung epithelial cells were cocultured with these transfected cells, they showed normal tubular morphogenesis, but not with untransfected NIH 3T3 cells. These results indicate that this protein, termed epimorphin, plays a central role in epithelial-mesenchymal interactions.  相似文献

Little is known about how plants protect flowers—their reproductive organs—against florivory. Additionally, the induced floral defense system has been examined in only a few species. We tested the inducibility of putative floral defenses and investigated the relationship between natural florivory and the floral defenses of 12 naturally growing plant species. The relationships between florivory and four chemical traits (nitrogen, phosphorus, total phenolics, and condensed tannins) were investigated in 12 plant species. We also studied whether flowers induce changes in chemical defenses in response to artificial damage in 10 plant species. A higher concentration of floral nitrogen was associated with a decreasing frequency of florivore attacks. Among the four traits of the 10 plant species studied, no trait changed in response to the artificial damage. We suggest that induced defense systems may not be advantageous for flowers, although it is also possible that these species simply do not use induced defense in any of their plant parts.  相似文献

Summary I developed a model for seed size variation among plants assuming that the pollen captured per flower depends on both the allocation to pollen capture mechanisms per flower and the number of flowers on each plant. I showed that the optimal seed size increases with (1) the total resource allocation to reproduction, (2) decreasing outcross pollen availability, (3) decreasing probability of seedling establishment and (4) decreasing selfing rate. However, optimal seed size does not depend on the total resource allocation if the total number of pollen grains captured by a plant increases linearly with its flower number. In addition, the optimal seed size is not always positively correlated with the optimal resource allocation to pollen capture mechanisms per flower. I discussed implications of the results for seasonal decline in seed size and seed size variations among populations, such as alutitudinal variation.  相似文献

Cadherins are a family of transmembrane glycoproteins which play a key role in Ca(2+)-dependent cell-cell adhesion. Cytoplasmic domains of these molecules are anchored to the cell cytoskeleton and are required for cadherin function. To elucidate how the function of cadherins is controlled through their cytoplasmic domains, we deleted five different regions in the cytoplasmic domain of E-cadherin. After transfecting L cells with cDNA encoding the mutant polypeptides, we assayed aggregating activity of these transfectants; all these mutant proteins were shown to have an extracellular domain with normal Ca(2+)-sensitivity and molecular weight. Two mutant polypeptides with deletions in the carboxy half of the cytoplasmic domain, however, did not promote cell-cell adhesion and had also lost the ability to bind to the cytoskeleton, whereas the mutant molecules with deletions of other regions retained the ability to promote cell adhesion and to anchor to the cytoskeleton. Thus, the cytoplasmic domain contains a subdomain which was involved in the cell adhesion and cytoskeleton-binding functions. When E-cadherin in F9 cells or in L cells transfected with wild-type or functional mutant cadherin polypeptides was solubilized with nonionic detergents and immunoprecipitated, two additional 94 and 102 kDa components were coprecipitated. The 94 kDa component, however, was not detected in the immunoprecipitates from cells expressing the mutant cadherins which had lost the adhesive function. These results suggest that the interaction of the carboxy half of the cytoplasmic domain with the 94 kDa component regulates the cell binding function of the extracellular domain of E-cadherin.  相似文献

E-cadherin is a Ca2+-dependent cell-cell adhesion molecule identified as a glycoprotein with a molecular weight (MW) of 124,000. To study the role of the sugar moieties of this adhesion molecule, we tested the effect of tunicamycin on aggregation mediated by E-cadherin of teratocarcinoma cells. Immunoblot analysis using a monoclonal antibody to E-cadherin showed that in cells treated with tunicamycin this adhesion molecule is converted into two forms with MW of 118,000 and 131,000. The smaller one was exposed on the cell surface and showed a trypsin sensitivity characteristic to E-cadherin, suggesting that this is the peptide moiety of E-cadherin whose glycosylation with N-linked oligosaccharides was blocked by tunicamycin. The larger one was not removed by trypsin treatment of cells, suggesting an intracellular location. These tunicamycin-treated cells aggregated in a Ca2+-dependent manner, and the aggregation was inhibited by a monoclonal antibody to E-cadherin. These results suggested that N-linked oligosaccharides are not involved in the functional sites of this adhesion molecule.  相似文献
