The noun tsara'at appears about two dozen times in the Hebrew Bible, almost exclusively in Leviticus, where it is used to describe a state of ritual defilement manifested as a scaly condition of the skin, a condition of cloth, leather, and the walls of houses. In the Septuagint, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, negac tsara'at was translated as aphe lepras; in the Latin Vulgate, this became plega leprae. These words in Greek and Latin implied a condition that spread over the body, not a term of ritual impurity. Tsara'at has continued to be translated as "leprosy," even though this term is not appropriate, as there was no leprosy as we know it in the Middle East during the time period the Hebrew Bible was written. Others have suggested that the proper translation of tsara'at is "mold." The recent identification of a specific mold (Stachybotrys sp.) that contaminates buildings and causes respiratory distress, memory loss, and rash, and the fact that mold has been present for millennia, lend support to the translation of tsara'at as "mold." 相似文献

Analysis of the structure and function of a protein such as the epidermal growth factor receptor is facilitated by the use of antibodies directed against discrete portions of the protein. Here, we describe the characterization and use of antibodies directed against synthetic peptides corresponding to specific portions of the epidermal growth factor receptor and/or v-erbB protein. In particular, one useful antiserum has allowed us to compare the protein kinase activities of the epidermal growth factor receptor and the v-erbB proteins and to conclude that the v-erbB protein is a protein-tyrosine specific kinase as is its homologue the avian epidermal growth factor receptor. 相似文献

This study sought to determine the influence of age on the left ventricular (LV) response to prolonged exercise (PE; 150 min). LV systolic and diastolic performance was assessed using echocardiography (ECHO) before (pre) and 60 min following (post) exercise performed at 80% maximal aerobic power in young (28 ± 4.5 years; n = 18; mean ± SD) and middle-aged (52 ± 3.9 years; n = 18) participants. LV performance was assessed using two-dimensional ECHO, including speckle-tracking imaging, to determine LV strain (LV S) and LV S rate (LV SR), in addition to Doppler measures of diastolic function. We observed a postexercise elevation in LV S (young: -19.5 ± 2.1% vs. -21.6 ± 2.1%; middle-aged: -19.9 ± 2.3% vs. -20.8 ± 2.1%; P < 0.05) and LV SR (young: -1.19 ± 0.1 vs. -1.37 ± 0.2; middle-aged: -1.20 ± 0.2 vs. -1.38 ± 0.2; P < 0.05) during recovery in both groups. Diastolic function was reduced during recovery, including the LV SR ratio of early-to-late atrial diastolic filling (SR(e/a)), in young (2.35 ± 0.7 vs. 1.89 ± 0.5; P < 0.01) and middle-aged (1.51 ± 0.5 vs. 1.05 ± 0.2; P < 0.01) participants, as were conventional indices including the E/A ratio. Dobutamine stress ECHO revealed a postexercise depression in LV S in response to increasing dobutamine dose, which was similar in both young (pre-exercise dobutamine 0 vs. 20 μg·kg(-1)·min(-1): -19.5 ± 2.1 vs. -27.2 ± 2.2%; postexercise dobutamine 0 vs. 20 μg·kg(-1)·min(-1): -21.6 ± 2.1 vs. -23.7 ± 2.2%; P < 0.05) and middle-aged participants (pre: -19.9 ± 2.3 vs. -25.3 ± 2.7%; post: -20.8 ± 2.1 vs. -23.5 ± 2.7; P < 0.05). This was despite higher noradrenaline concentrations immediately postexercise in the middle-aged participants compared with young (4.26 ± 2.7 nmol/L vs. 3.00 ± 1.4 nmol/L; P = 0.12). Contrafreeloading is an intriguing phenomenon in which animals will work to obtain resources, such as food, when the same resource is simultaneously freely available. Multiple hypotheses exist for why animals might choose to contrafreeload. In this study, we assessed preferences for contrafreeloading in giraffe at the Bronx Zoo to determine whether they actually preferred to contrafreeload or were simply demonstrating a willingness to contrafreeload. Food was presented in a range of distributions between an easily accessed feeding device and a more challenging one and the giraffes’ feeding behavior at these two types of feeding devices was recorded. As the experiments progressed, more giraffe used these more challenging feeders. There was significant individual variation in the expression of preference for contrafreeloading and willingness to contrafreeload. Individual, phase of the experiment, and an interaction between these factors were significant predictors of challenge feeder use. Three foraging strategies emerged among the giraffe that we termed “freeloaders,” “contrafreeloaders,” and “opportunists.” The results of this study demonstrate that multiple indices of preference are necessary when assessing contrafreeloading behavior, and that giraffe are affected to different degrees by the factors that stimulate contrafreeloading. Background
As the United States embraces electronic health records (EHRs), improved emergency medical services (EMS) information systems are also a priority; however, little is known about the experiences of EMS agencies as they adopt and implement electronic patient care report (e-PCR) systems. We sought to characterize motivations for adoption of e-PCR systems, challenges associated with adoption and implementation, and emerging implementation strategies.Methods
We conducted a qualitative study using semi-structured in-depth interviews with EMS agency leaders. Participants were recruited through a web-based survey of National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP) members, a didactic session at the 2010 NAEMSP Annual Meeting, and snowball sampling. Interviews lasted approximately 30 minutes, were recorded and professionally transcribed. Analysis was conducted by a five-person team, employing the constant comparative method to identify recurrent themes.Results
Twenty-three interviewees represented 20 EMS agencies from the United States and Canada; 14 EMS agencies were currently using e-PCR systems. The primary reason for adoption was the potential for e-PCR systems to support quality assurance efforts. Challenges to e-PCR system adoption included those common to any health information technology project, as well as challenges unique to the prehospital setting, including: fear of increased ambulance run times leading to decreased ambulance availability, difficulty integrating with existing hospital information systems, and unfunded mandates requiring adoption of e-PCR systems. Three recurring strategies emerged to improve e-PCR system adoption and implementation: 1) identify creative funding sources; 2) leverage regional health information organizations; and 3) build internal information technology capacity.Conclusion
EMS agencies are highly motivated to adopt e-PCR systems to support quality assurance efforts; however, adoption and implementation of e-PCR systems has been challenging for many. DiGeorge syndrome (DGS), characterized genetically by a deletion within chromosome 22q11.2, is associated with a constellation of congenital heart defects. DiGeorge critical region 8 (Dgcr8), a gene that maps to the common deletion region of DGS, encodes a double stranded RNA-binding protein that is essential for miRNA biogenesis. To address the potential contribution of Dgcr8 insufficiency to cardiovascular development, we have inactivated Dgcr8 in cardiac neural crest cells (cNCCs). Dgcr8 mutants displayed a wide spectrum of malformations, including persistent truncus arteriosus (PTA) and ventricular septal defect (VSD). Interestingly, Dgcr8-null cNCCs that properly migrated into the cardiac outflow tract (OFT), proliferate normally and differentiate into vascular smooth muscle cells. However, loss of Dgcr8 causes a significant portion of the cNCCs to undergo apoptosis, causing a decrease in the pool of progenitors required for OFT remodeling. Our data uncover a new role of Dgcr8 in cardiovascular morphogenesis, plausibly as part of transmission mechanism for FGF-dependent survival cue for migrating cNCCs. 相似文献
