We assembled a dataset tabulating the weights of Thai and Indonesian mangrove trees that we measured between 1982 and 2001. We selected four Thai study sites in Phang Nga, Ranong, Satun, and Trat Provinces and one site in eastern Indonesia on Halmahera Island in Maluku Province. The stands in Ranong Province and on Halmahera Island were in primary forests with data collected in the 1980s and the remaining stands were in secondary forests with data collected later. We collected 124 tree samples from ten species (Avicennia alba, Bruguiera cylindrica, B. gymnorrhiza, Ceriops tagal, Rhizophora apiculata, R. mucronata, Sonneratia alba, S. caseolaris, Xylocarpus granatum, and X. moluccensis) and measured the root weights of 32 individuals of nine species (A. alba, B. cylindrica, B. gymnorrhiza, C. tagal, R. apiculata, R. mucronata, S. alba, S. caseolaris, and X. granatum). All sampled trees were subjected to a standardized protocol to obtain aboveground weights. The trunks were divided into horizontal segments from which the leaves and branches were collected separately. Roots were collected by winching them out of the ground, by trench digging, or by complete excavation. Thus, we were able to compile the weights of the trunk, branches, leaves, and roots of each tree sampled. Aerial roots were included in root weight measurements, although they were collected above ground. We compiled separate lists of trunk diameters, trunk heights, heights of the lowest living branches, and the heights of aerial roots on the trunks of trees in different size categories. Our dataset includes a wide range of tree sizes (maximum trunk diameter 48.9 cm), geographical locations (1°10′N–12°24′N, 98°32′E–123°49′E) and organ weights (trunks, branches, leaves, and roots), and therefore should prove useful in future biomass studies of mangrove forests.  相似文献

In the course of a study on yeast diversity in Japan and Thailand, we isolated two yeast strains with bipolar budding patterns. Physiological and phylogenetic analysis suggested that these two strains were identical to Hanseniaspora pseudoguilliermondii. However, these strains produced hat-shaped ascospores and endospores, the latter of which was an unknown characteristic of the species. Endospores were produced on yeast extract–malt extract (YM) plates, though ascospores were produced on cornmeal agar of H. pseudoguilliermondii cultures. Endospores were formed in a twin-cell structure composed of a mother cell and a daughter cell, which did not separate after budding. Unlike the cell wall of the endospores, that of ascospore was stained with a chitin-specific stain. This was a feature distinguishing endospores and ascospores. Cell morphology of H. pseudoguilliermondii was compared with other species of the genus by observing their type strains. Other Hanseniaspora species did not show endospore formation under the same condition in which H. pseudoguilliermondii did. Therefore, the formation of endospores was considered to be a species-delimiting character of H. pseudoguilliermondii.  相似文献

Four strains of yeasts isolated in Thailand and Taiwan were found to represent four distinct novel species of the ascomycetous anamorphic yeast genus Candida. These strains are located in the Clavispora-Metschnikowia clade in a phylogenetic tree based on the D1/D2 domain sequences of the large subunit rRNA genes. Together with Candida picinguabensis and Candida saopaulonensis, the four novel species constitute a well-separated subclade from other species of the Clavispora-Metschnikowia clade. Three species from Thailand are described as Candida bambusicola sp. nov. (type strain, ST-50(T) = BCC 7750(T) = NBRC 106734(T) = CBS 11723(T)), Candida nongkhaiensis sp. nov. (type strain, ST-95(T) = BCC 8331(T) = NBRC 105874(T) =CBS 11724(T)) and Candida succicola sp. nov. (type strain, ST-631(T) = BCC 15314(T) = NBRC 106736(T) = CBS 11726(T)), respectively, and the species from Taiwan is described as Candida touchengensis sp. nov. (type strain, SY4S03(T) = NBRC 102647(T) = BCRC 23097(T) = CBS 10585(T)).  相似文献

Acetobacter aceti converts ethanol to acetic acid, and strains highly resistant to both are used to make vinegar. A. aceti survives acetic acid exposure by tolerating cytoplasmic acidification, which implies an unusual adaptation of cytoplasmic components to acidic conditions. A. aceti citrate synthase (AaCS), a hexameric type II citrate synthase, is required for acetic acid resistance and, therefore, would be expected to function at low pH. Recombinant AaCS has intrinsic acid stability that may be a consequence of strong selective pressure to function at low pH, and unexpectedly high thermal stability for a protein that has evolved to function at approximately 30 degrees C. The crystal structure of AaCS, complexed with oxaloacetate (OAA) and the inhibitor carboxymethyldethia-coenzyme A (CMX), was determined to 1.85 A resolution using protein purified by a tandem affinity purification procedure. This is the first crystal structure of a "closed" type II CS, and its active site residues interact with OAA and CMX in the same manner observed in the corresponding type I chicken CS.OAA.CMX complex. While AaCS is not regulated by NADH, it retains many of the residues used by Escherichia coli CS (EcCS) for NADH binding. The surface of AaCS is abundantly decorated with basic side chains and has many fewer uncompensated acidic charges than EcCS; this constellation of charged residues is stable in varied pH environments and may be advantageous in the A. aceti cytoplasm.  相似文献

In the course of a survey of yeast biodiversity in the natural substrates in Thailand, eight strains were found to represent three hitherto undescribed species of Hanseniaspora/Kloeckera . They were isolated from insect frass, flower, lichen, rotted fruit and rotted wood. Based on the morphological and physiological characteristics, and sequences of D1/D2 domain, six strains represent a single species of the genus Hanseniaspora , described as Hanseniaspora thailandica sp. nov. (type BCC 14938T=NBRC 104216T=CBS 10841T), and another strain as Hanseniaspora singularis sp. nov. (type BCC 15001T=NBRC 104214T=CBS 10840T). A further strain, which belongs to Kloeckera and does not produce ascospores, is described as Kloeckera hatyaiensis sp. nov. (type BCC 14939T=NBRC 104215T=CBS 10842T). Strains belonging to H. thailandica sp. nov. differed by 17–19 nucleotide substitutions from Hanseniaspora meyeri , the closest species. DNA reassociation between the two taxa showed 30–48% relatedness. Kloeckera hatyaiensis sp. nov. and H. singularis sp. nov. differed by eight and 16 nucleotide substitutions with one gap from the nearest species, Hanseniaspora clermontiae and Hanseniaspora valbyensis , respectively.  相似文献

Two yeast strains (ST-235 and ST-237) isolated from insect frass collected in northeastern Thailand, were identified as Pichia acaciae and a hitherto undescribed species based on the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA, ITS regions, and DNA-DNA reassociation experiments. The latter strain, ST-237 (=BCC 11769=NBRC 103638=JCM 12576), was described as Pichia koratensis sp. nov. Pichia koratensis is closely related to Pichia acaciae in the D1/D2 domain sequence of 26S rDNA and phenotypical characteristics but differs by 5 nucleotides (0.9%) from the type strain of P. acaciae and is clearly distinguished by the assimilation and fermentation of sucrose.  相似文献

Fifteen strains of anamorphic yeasts isolated from various natural substrates collected in various places in Thailand were found to represent two novel species of anamorphic yeast genus Candida based on the sequence analysis of the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit rRNA genes, chemotaxonomic and conventional properties used for the classification of yeasts. These strains are located in the clade including Candida etchellsii and Candida magnoliae. Fourteen strains represented by ST-490(T) (BCC 15176(T)=NBRC 106439(T)= CBS 11674(T)) are closely related to Candida sorbosivorans in the D1/D2 sequences but 11 nucleotides (2.4%) were substituted. The remaining strain, ST-594(T) (=BCC 15278(T)=NBRC 106446(T)=CBS 11673(T)) showed a close relationship to Candida geochares but 21 nucleotides (4.7%) were substituted. Apparently, these strains represent two novel Candida species of the Starmerella clade. The two species are described as Candida potacharoeniae sp. nov. and Candida spenceri sp. nov. in the present paper. Like the most species of this clade, the two species contain galactose in the cells in addition to glucose and mannose and have high mol% G + C of 54.4-55.9 and 54.9, respectively.  相似文献
