A strictly maintained patrilineal family system makes virilocal marriage almost universal and uxorilocal marriage rare in the history of rural China. Uxorilocal marriage can be divided into two types that may be termed, respectively, contingent and institutional. The former preserves family lineages in families without a son and occurs when uxorilocal marriage is uncommon. The latter serves practical economic purposes in families with sons and occurs when uxorilocal marriage is relatively prevalent. Using data from a survey in two counties of Shaanxi--Lueyang, where both kinds of uxorilocal marriage are prevalent, and Sanyuan, where uxorilocal marriage is rare and usually contingent--this paper employs logistic regression models in a quantitative comparative study of determinants of uxorilocal marriage in rural China. We show that the purposes and prevalence of the two types of uxorilocal marriage differ and that their determinants are also different in the two counties. In Sanyuan, the determinants are only a couple's sibling composition, membership in a large family clan, and educational level. In Lueyang, in addition to those determinants in Sanyuan, important contributions to the type of uxorilocal marriage include a couple's parental marriage type, age at marriage, adoption status, marriage arrangement, and their attitudes toward uxorilocal marriage. The results indicate the potential importance of encouraging uxorilocal marriage in rural areas as a means of mitigating demographic and social problems related to son preference, such as high sex ratio at birth and lack of old-age security, which are projected for China's future. 相似文献

The insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) is a tyrosine kinase, transmembrane receptor expressed in most body tissues and required for normal growth of cells. In cell culture, overexpression of the receptor has been shown to promote transformation and enhance cell survival in response to selected cytotoxic agents. As tumors develop, abnormalities in vascularization lead to a heterogeneous environment that includes areas of hypoxia, low pH and low glucose. Here we report that the overexpression of the IGF1R promotes increased survival in cells exposed to hypoxia, low pH and low glucose. Furthermore, cells lacking the receptor due to targeted disruption of the IGF1R gene do not survive as well as normal cells in such conditions. In addition, we find that cells can activate the IGF1R gene promoter in response to these conditions, and immunoblot analyses show increased receptor protein levels in cell exposed to hypoxia. Our results suggest a pathway of cancer cell adaptation to the tumor microenvironment in which conditions of the environment may induce expression of IGF1R, and this subsequent overexpression of the receptor may increase cell survival in such conditions. 相似文献

Actin-based motility is critical for nervous system development. Both the migration of neurons and the extension of neurites require organized actin polymerization to push the cell membrane forward. Numerous extracellular stimulants of motility and axon guidance cues regulate actin-based motility through the rho GTPases (rho, rac, and cdc42). The rho GTPases reorganize the actin cytoskeleton, leading to stress fiber, filopodium, or lamellipodium formation. The activity of the rho GTPases is regulated by a variety of proteins that either stimulate GTP uptake (activation) or hydrolysis (inactivation). These proteins potentially link extracellular signals to the activation state of rho GTPases. Effectors downstream of the rho GTPases that directly influence actin polymerization have been identified and are involved in neurite development. The Arp2/3 complex nucleates the formation of new actin branches that extend the membrane forward. Ena/VASP proteins can cause the formation of longer actin filaments, characteristic of growth cone actin morphology, by preventing the capping of barbed ends. Actin-depolymerizing factor (ADF)/cofilin depolymerizes and severs actin branches in older parts of the actin meshwork, freeing monomers to be re-incorporated into actively growing filaments. The signaling mechanisms by which extracellular cues that guide axons to their targets lead to direct effects on actin filament dynamics are becoming better understood. 相似文献

This paper reviews the ecological advantages and disadvantages of very small body size inSorex Linnaeus, 1758 shrews living at high latitudes with cold winters. It examines the feeding and foraging habits of small and large shrews in the context of prey supply, location of winter prey sources, territory requirements, habitat exploitation and inter-specific competition. Data on feeding habits and prey availability show that the major costs of small size are a reduction in food niche breadth and prey biomass resulting from restrictions on the type and size of prey eaten, and large territory requirements. Major benefits of small size are the ability to subsist on small, numerous and accessible arthropods with high encounter rates, enabling coexistence with larger congeners and exploitation of low-productivity habitats less suitable for larger earthworm-eating species. Small size, coupled with low per capita food intake, is shown to be of special adaptive value in cold winters when food supply is restricted mostly to small arthropods, and earthworms are few. 相似文献

We produced aggregate chimeric embryos between blastomeres from the somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) embryos and blastomeres from normal embryos. The SCNT embryos were produced by fusing enucleated oocytes with GFP gene introduced fibroblast cells, which were derived from a day 16 fetus. GFP gene-introduced fibroblast cells were cultured and passaged four to 12 times over a period of 45-79 days before SCNT. After transferring them into pseudopregnant recipient rabbits, the 15-day postcoitus fetuses were collected. We examined the existence of the cells derived from SCNT embryos in the fetus stage of pregnancy to detect the GFP gene. Fetuses that were not collected continued to develop into newborn rabbits. Two hundred and thirty-six chimeric embryos were produced using 39 SCNT morula stage embryos, and these embryos were transferred to 11 recipient rabbits. As a result, 27 normally developed and 16 degenerated concepti were obtained. The GFP gene-positive signals were detected in one of the fetuses, two of the placentae, and two of the degenerated concepti. In this study, we found that the rabbit SCNT embryos have the ability to develop and differentiate in vivo. We also demonstrated a novel method of producing a transgenic rabbit using SCNT. 相似文献
