Three sulphur containing compounds, carbon disulphide, dimethyl disulphide and dimethyl sulphide were bioassayed for preference after admixing them in cereal base as ready bait block for use against commensal rat, R. rattus (wild type) in four way choice chamber system. Rat preference for different baits was also studied with automatic recording animal activity meter. Rats exhibited attractancy to the baits at 0.005% concentration of all the three compounds while at 0.01% concentration they have showed repellency. Dimethyl sulphide at 0.005% concentration showed better attractancy towards both sexes of rat.  相似文献

MOTIVATION: As biomedical researchers are amassing a plethora of information in a variety of forms resulting from the advancements in biomedical research, there is a critical need for innovative information management and knowledge discovery tools to sift through these vast volumes of heterogeneous data and analysis tools. In this paper we present a general model for an information management system that is adaptable and scalable, followed by a detailed design and implementation of one component of the model. The prototype, called BioSifter, was applied to problems in the bioinformatics area. RESULTS: BioSifter was tested using 500 documents obtained from PubMed database on two biological problems related to genetic polymorphism and extracorporal shockwave lithotripsy. The results indicate that BioSifter is a powerful tool for biological researchers to automatically retrieve relevant text documents from biological literature based on their interest profile. The results also indicate that the first stage of information management process, i.e. data to information transformation, significantly reduces the size of the information space. The filtered data obtained through BioSifter is relevant as well as much smaller in dimension compared to all the retrieved data. This would in turn significantly reduce the complexity associated with the next level transformation, i.e. information to knowledge.  相似文献

One of the best-kept secrets by fungi especially yeast is the function of the different shapes and surface structures of their vegetative and sexual cells. They definitely do not produce these shapes (e.g. round, elongated, kidney, needle, hat, saturnoid, etc.) and surfaces (e.g. smooth, rough, hairy, warty, etc.) for our curiosity or to be classified, but surely produce these for their own benefit. This mini-review will show that a large variety of 3-hydroxy oxylipins are widely distributed in the fungal domain and closely associated with these surface ornamentations. In concert with nano-scale surface structures, they probably play a role in cell aggregation as well as spore release from sexual structures such as asci.  相似文献

Endothelin is an endogenous vasoactive peptide that is considered among the most potent vasoconstrictor substances known. In addition to its vascular effects, endothelins and their receptors have been shown to be present in the eye and to have a number of ocular actions that may be important for ocular homeostasis, but, in excess can be a potential contributor to ocular neuropathy in glaucoma. The current review focuses on the cellular and molecular aspects of endothelins and its receptors in the eye with an emphasis on its relationship to ocular function and its potential role in the etiology of glaucoma pathophysiology.  相似文献

The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) molecular chaperone, BiP, plays a role in the cotranslational translocation and subsequent folding and assembly of newly synthesized proteins targeted to the ER and secretory pathway. The sequence encoding a Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb] Franco) BiP homologue (PmBiP) was identified by differential screening of a seedling cDNA library. Southern blotting indicated that PmBiP is most likely present as a single copy. The deduced amino acid sequence of PmBiP contains an HEEL tetrapeptide sequence which functions to retain PmBiP in the ER and is different from HDEL commonly found in angiosperm plant BiPs. Amino acid sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis show that PmBiP is highly similar to other plant BiPs yet forms a distinct phylogenetic subgroup which is separate from the angiosperm BiPs. Northern and western blotting revealed that PmBiP is subject to developmental regulation during seed development, germination, and early seedling growth and is seasonally regulated in needles of young seedlings. Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation-induced oxidative stress has been implicated in various skin diseases. Here, we report the photoprotective effect of grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) on UV-induced oxidative stress and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and NF-kappaB signaling pathways using normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK). Treatment of NHEK with GSPs inhibited UVB-induced hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), lipid peroxidation, protein oxidation, and DNA damage in NHEK and scavenged hydroxyl radicals and superoxide anions in a cell-free system. GSPs also inhibited UVB-induced depletion of antioxidant defense components, such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione. As UV-induced oxidative stress mediates activation of MAPK and NF-kappaB signaling pathways, we determined the effects of GSPs on these pathways. Treatment of NHEK with GSPs inhibited UVB-induced phosphorylation of ERK1/2, JNK, and p38 proteins of the MAPK family at the various time points studied. As UV-induced H2O2 plays a major role in activation of MAPK proteins, NHEK were treated with H2O2 with or without GSPs and other known antioxidants, viz. (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate, silymarin, ascorbic acid, and N-acetylcysteine. It was observed that H2O2-induced phosphorylation of ERK1/2, JNK, and p38 was decreased by these antioxidants. Under identical conditions, GSPs also inhibited UVB-induced activation of NF-kappaB/p65, which was mediated through inhibition of degradation and activation of IkappaBalpha and IKKalpha, respectively. Together, these results suggest that GSPs could be useful in the attenuation of UV-radiation-induced oxidative stress-mediated skin diseases in human skin.  相似文献

Antimicrobial cationic peptides provide a promising means of engineering plant resistance to a range of plant pathogens, including viruses. PV5 is a synthetic structural variant of polyphemusin, a cationic peptide derived from the horseshoe crab-Limulus polyphemus. PV5 has been shown to be benign toward eukaryotic membranes but with enhanced antimicrobial activity against animal pathogens. In this work, the cytotoxicity of PV5 toward tobacco protoplasts and leaf discs was assessed using TTC (2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride) and Evans blue colorimetric assays. PV5 showed no measurable cytotoxic effects even at levels as high as 60 μg. As a possible approach to enhancing plant resistance, a gene encoding PV5 was fused to the signal sequence encoding the C-terminus portion of the BiP protein from Pseudotsuga menziesii, under the control of 2 × 35S CaMV promoter. When introduced into Nicotiana tabacum var Xanthi gene integration and expression was confirmed by both Southern and northern analyses. When transgenic plants were subsequently challenged with bacterial and fungal phytopathogens enhanced resistance was observed. Moreover, transgenic plants also displayed antiviral properties against Tobacco Mosaic Virus making PV5 an excellent candidate for conferring unusually broad spectrum resistance to plants and the first anti-plant virus antimicrobial peptide.  相似文献
