We evaluated the degree to which relative growth rate (RGR) of saplings and large trees is related to seven functional traits that describe physiological behavior and soil environmental factors related to topography and fertility for 57 subtropical tree species in Dinghushan, China. The mean values of functional traits and soil environmental factors for each species that were related to RGR varied with ontogenetic stage. Sapling RGR showed greater relationships with functional traits than large-tree RGR, whereas large-tree RGR was more associated with soil environment than was sapling RGR. The strongest single predictors of RGR were wood density for saplings and slope aspect for large trees. The stepwise regression model for large trees accounted for a larger proportion of variability (R 2 = 0.95) in RGR than the model for saplings (R 2 = 0.55). Functional diversity analysis revealed that the process of habitat filtering likely contributes to the substantial changes in regulation of RGR as communities transition from saplings to large trees.  相似文献

A comparison was made between two anaesthetic combinations in 35 free-ranging adult Iberian ibexes (Capra pyrenaica), from May to December 2005. Sixteen ibexes (10 males, 6 females) were captured using xylazine–ketamine (3.0 ± 0.4 + 3.0 ± 0.4 mg/kg) and 19 ibexes (12 males, 7 females) with medetomidine–ketamine (0.10 ± 0.02 + 2.1 ± 0.3 mg/kg). Anaesthetic times were evaluated, as well as clinical variables (respiratory and heart rates, rectal temperature, haemoglobin oxygen saturation), haematological and biochemical variables, at the time of induction and after 1 h. The heart rate of ibex immobilized with medetomidine–ketamine was higher than those immobilized with xylazine–ketamine. Stabilization of the heart rate of ibex immobilized with medetomidine–ketamine came earlier than those immobilized with xylazine–ketamine. Rectal temperature decreased and stabilized in both groups, but earlier in the xylazine–ketamine group, and hypoxemia was observed in both groups. The white blood cell count of ibex immobilized with medetomidine–ketamine was lower than those immobilized with xylazine–ketamine throughout anaesthesia, while sodium concentration was higher only after 1 h of anaesthesia. In ibex immobilized with xylazine–ketamine, the neutrophil count, serum creatinine kinase activity and aspartate aminotransferase activity increased after 1 h of immobilization, while triglycerides decreased. Changes found in haematological and biochemical variables suggest no major differences in the different drug combinations used, but clinical findings of this study, as well as hypoxemia, hypothermia and bradycardia, were important records that should be taken into account when performing a safe operation.  相似文献

The effects of time delays in a phosphorylation-dephosphorylation pathway   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Complex signaling cascades involve many interlocked positive and negative feedback loops which have inherent delays. Modeling these complex cascades often requires a large number of variables and parameters. Delay differential equation models have been helpful in describing inherent time lags and also in reducing the number of governing equations. However the consequences of model reduction via delay differential equations have not been fully explored. In this paper we systematically examine the effect of delays in a complex network of phosphorylation-dephosphorylation cycles (described by Gonze and Goldbeter, J. Theor. Biol., 210, (2001) 167-186), which commonly occur in many biochemical pathways. By introducing delays in the positive and negative regulatory interactions, we show that a delay differential model can indeed reduce the number of cycles actually required to describe the phosphorylation-dephosphorylation pathway. In addition, we find some of the unique properties of the network and a quantitative measure of the minimum number of delay variables required to model the network. These results can be extended for modeling complex signalling cascades.  相似文献

The Resedaceae, containing 6 genera and ca. 85 species, are widely distributed in the Old World, with a major center of species diversity in the Mediterranean basin. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS and plastid trnL-trnF sequences of 66 species from all genera of the Resedaceae reveal (1) monophyly of the family, in congruence with preliminary phylogenetic studies; (2) molecular support for the traditional morphological subdivision of the Resedaceae into three tribes according to ovary and placentation types, and carpel number; (3) two monophyletic genera (Caylusea, Sesamoides), and one natural group (core Reseda), which includes the remaining four genera of the family (Ochradenus, Oligomeris, Randonia, Reseda); (4) a monophyletic origin for four of the six taxonomic sections recognized within Reseda (Leucoreseda, Luteola, Glaucoreseda, Phyteuma). Our results lead us to interpret an increment of the basic chromosome number in the family from x=5 to x=6 in at least two independent instances, and a broad representation of polyploids in multiple lineages across phylogenies, including association between octoploids and alien invasion in many parts of the world. Species diversity, endemism number, phylogenetic relationships and sequence divergence in Resedaceae suggest two major centers of differentiation, one in the western Mediterranean, and the other in the eastern Mediterranean and SW Asia. Two independent colonization events to the Canary Islands from Africa are indicated for the two Canarian Reseda endemics.  相似文献

The beta-amyloid peptide, the major component of the senile plaques that characterize Alzheimer's disease, is generated from a set of alternatively spliced beta-amyloid precursor proteins (APPs), which are proteolytically cleaved by the action of a set of enzymes referred to generically as secretases. The major processing pathway involves the proteolytic cleavage of APP by alpha-secretase and results in the release of soluble non-amyloidogenic full-length amino terminal fragments (sAPP), which appear to be involved in neurotrophic events. A reduced production of these neuroprotective sAPP would contribute, together with deposition of the beta-amyloid peptide, to the neurodegenerative processes that lead to the cellular death in Alzheimer's disease. In the present work, we describe a dramatic reduction of sAPP content in medium conditioned by neuronal cells grown under low-serum conditions, when compared with the levels released in the presence of 10% serum. The inhibitory effect on sAPP release appears to be quite specific since that reduction occurs without major changes in cell proliferation, expression of APP-mRNA or intracellular APP levels. Under low-serum conditions, cells showed a more differentiated morphology and no apoptotic signs were observed. Since the alpha-secretase has been described as a membrane anchored protein, our results suggest that the serum contains an essential factor(s) involved in the alpha-secretase activity.  相似文献

Abstract: In primary cultures of cerebellar neurons glutamate neurotoxicity is mainly mediated by activation of the NMDA receptor, which allows the entry of Ca2+ and Na+ into the neuron. To maintain Na+ homeostasis, the excess Na+ entering through the ion channel should be removed by Na+,K+-ATPase. It is shown that incubation of primary cultured cerebellar neurons with glutamate resulted in activation of the Na+,K+-ATPase. The effect was rapid, peaking between 5 and 15 min (85% activation), and was maintained for at least 2 h. Glutamate-induced activation of Na+,K+-ATPase was dose dependent: It was appreciable (37%) at 0.1 µ M and peaked (85%) at 100 µ M . The increase in Na+,K+-ATPase activity by glutamate was prevented by MK-801, indicating that it is mediated by activation of the NMDA receptor. Activation of the ATPase was reversed by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, an activator of protein kinase C, indicating that activation of Na+,K+-ATPase is due to decreased phosphorylation by protein kinase C. W-7 or cyclosporin, both inhibitors of calcineurin, prevented the activation of Na+,K+-ATPase by glutamate. These results suggest that activation of NMDA receptors leads to activation of calcineurin, which dephosphorylates an amino acid residue of the Na+,K+-ATPase that was previously phosphorylated by protein kinase C. This dephosphorylation leads to activation of Na+,K+-ATPase.  相似文献

Theory on plant succession predicts a temporal increase in the complexity of spatial community structure and of competitive interactions: initially random occurrences of early colonising species shift towards spatially and competitively structured plant associations in later successional stages. Here we use long‐term data on early plant succession in a German post mining area to disentangle the importance of random colonisation, habitat filtering, and competition on the temporal and spatial development of plant community structure. We used species co‐occurrence analysis and a recently developed method for assessing competitive strength and hierarchies (transitive versus intransitive competitive orders) in multispecies communities. We found that species turnover decreased through time within interaction neighbourhoods, but increased through time outside interaction neighbourhoods. Successional change did not lead to modular community structure. After accounting for species richness effects, the strength of competitive interactions and the proportion of transitive competitive hierarchies increased through time. Although effects of habitat filtering were weak, random colonization and subsequent competitive interactions had strong effects on community structure. Because competitive strength and transitivity were poorly correlated with soil characteristics, there was little evidence for context dependent competitive strength associated with intransitive competitive hierarchies.  相似文献

Expression of p16(Ink4a) and p19(Arf) increases with age in both rodent and human tissues. However, whether these tumour suppressors are effectors of ageing remains unclear, mainly because knockout mice lacking p16(Ink4a) or p19(Arf) die early of tumours. Here, we show that skeletal muscle and fat, two tissues that develop early ageing-associated phenotypes in response to BubR1 insufficiency, have high levels of p16(Ink4a) and p19(Arf). Inactivation of p16(Ink4a) in BubR1-insufficient mice attenuates both cellular senescence and premature ageing in these tissues. Conversely, p19(Arf) inactivation exacerbates senescence and ageing in BubR1 mutant mice. Thus, we identify BubR1 insufficiency as a trigger for activation of the Cdkn2a locus in certain mouse tissues, and demonstrate that p16(Ink4a) is an effector and p19(Arf) an attenuator of senescence and ageing in these tissues.  相似文献

Spore germination of five globally threatened fern species [Culcita macrocarpa C. Presl, Dryopteris aemula (Aiton) O. Kuntze, D. corleyi Fraser-Jenkins, D. guanchica Gibby and Jermy and Woodwardia radicans (L.) Sm.] was determined after 1, 6 or 12 months of storage in glass vials (dry storage) or on agar (wet storage) at -20, 5 or 20 degrees C. In all species, storage technique, storage temperature and the technique-temperature interaction all had a significant effect on germination percentage. In most cases, the germination percentage was best maintained by wet storage at 5 or 20 degrees C. In the case of the hygrophilous species C. macrocarpa and W. radicans, 6 or 12 months' dry storage killed most spores. Only Woodwardia radicans germinated in the dark during wet storage at 20 degrees C. Wet storage at 5 degrees C prevented dark germination, and reduced bacterial and fungal contamination. Wet storage at -20 degrees C killed all or most spores in all species. In the three Dryopteris species, the differences among the storage conditions tested were smaller than in C. macrocarpa and W. radicans, and the decline in spore viability during storage was less marked, with high germination percentages being observed after 12 months of dry storage at all three temperatures. Dry storage, which has lower preparation time and space requirements than wet storage, was generally more effective at the lower temperatures (-20 or 5 degrees C).  相似文献
