We studied the socio-spatial organization of the woodland dormouse, Graphiurus murinus, by means of a monthly live-trapping and nest-box monitoring programme. Adult male (N = 5) home ranges were almost twice as large as those of females (N = 8), and both intra and intersexual home-range overlap was significantly larger in males than in females. However, the dispersion pattern of females was rather clumped, even during the breeding period, suggesting that females are not territorial. Sexual receptivity in females was asynchronous. In such circumstances, the Female in Space and Time hypothesis predicts that males will be non-territorial, a scenario which is matched by our data. Therefore, it is likely that the woodland dormouse has a promiscuous mating system.  相似文献

An efficient algorithm that can properly identify the targets to immunize or quarantine for preventing an epidemic in a population without knowing the global structural information is of obvious importance. Typically, a population is characterized by its community structure and the heterogeneity in the weak ties among nodes bridging over communities. We propose and study an effective algorithm that searches for bridge hubs, which are bridge nodes with a larger number of weak ties, as immunizing targets based on the idea of referencing to an expanding friendship circle as a self-avoiding walk proceeds. Applying the algorithm to simulated networks and empirical networks constructed from social network data of five US universities, we show that the algorithm is more effective than other existing local algorithms for a given immunization coverage, with a reduced final epidemic ratio, lower peak prevalence and fewer nodes that need to be visited before identifying the target nodes. The effectiveness stems from the breaking up of community networks by successful searches on target nodes with more weak ties. The effectiveness remains robust even when errors exist in the structure of the networks.  相似文献

Abstract

Plants encounter many environmental factors such as low and high temperatures during phytoremediation processes. In this study, our aim was to produce the transgenic tobacco plants by using a newly characterized bacterial nitroreductase, Ntr, which was active at a broad range temperature in order to detoxify 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) at lower temperature. The presence of Ntr and its heterologous expression was verified in T1 transgenic plants and their growing ability were determined under toxic amount of 2,4-DNT (35?µM). Fresh weight and dry weight of transgenic plants were significantly higher than wild type (WT) under toxic 2,4-DNT at 22?°C, indicating higher growth capacity of the transgenics. Transgenic plants also showed a higher tolerance than WT when exposed to 2,4-DNT at 15?°C. Moreover, transformation rate of 2,4-DNT was gradually decreased through decreasing temperatures in WT media, however, it was increased through decreasing temperatures in transgenic plant TR3-25 media and it had the highest transformation rate (54%) of 2,4-DNT at 4?°C. Correlatively, 2,4-DNT treatment at 4?°C led to a significant decrease in H2O2 level in transgenic plants. Thus, transgenic plants overexpressing nitroreductase might have an important advantage for phytoremediation of toxic nitroaromatic compounds in field applications at low temperatures.  相似文献

Oxidative stress has been implicated in etiopathogenesis of Graves' disease (GD). Increased lipid peroxidation and oxidative DNA damage have been found in GD patients. Oxidative DNA damage is mainly repaired by the base‐excision repair (BER) pathway. Polymorphisms in DNA‐repair genes have been associated with the increased risk of various diseases and could also be related to the etiology of GD. Therefore, we conducted a study including 197 patients with GD and age‐ and sex‐matched 303 healthy subjects to examine the role of single‐nucleotide polymorphisms of BER genes, APE/Ref‐1 (codon 148) and XRCC1 (codons 194 and 399) as a risk factor for GD. These polymorphisms were determined by quantitative real‐time PCR and melting curve analysis using LightCycler. No significant association was observed between the variant alleles of APE/Ref‐1 codon 148 [odds ratio (OR) = 0.89, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.69–1.17], XRCC1 codon 194 (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = 0.79–1.94), and XRCC1 codon 399 (OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 0.86–1.46) and GD. These preliminary results suggest that APE/Ref‐1 (codon 148) and XRCC1 (codons 194 and 399) polymorphisms are not significant risk factors for developing GD. Stem cell-based treatment of traumatic brain injury has been limited in its capacity to bring about complete functional recovery, because of the poor survival rate of the implanted stem cells. It is known that biocompatible biomaterials play a critical role in enhancing survival and proliferation of transplanted stem cells via provision of mechanical support. In this study, we noninvasively monitored in vivo behavior of implanted neural stem cells embedded within poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) scaffold, and showed that they survived over prolonged periods in corticectomized rat model. Corticectomized rat models were established by motor-cortex ablation of the rat. F3 cells expressing enhanced firefly luciferase (F3-effLuc) were established through retroviral infection. The F3-effLuc within PLLA was monitored using IVIS-100 imaging system 7 days after corticectomized surgery. F3-effLuc within PLLA robustly adhered, and gradually increased luciferase signals of F3-effLuc within PLLA were detected in a day dependent manner. The implantation of F3-effLuc cells/PLLA complex into corticectomized rats showed longer-lasting luciferase activity than F3-effLuc cells alone. The bioluminescence signals from the PLLA-encapsulated cells were maintained for 14 days, compared with 8 days for the non-encapsulated cells. Immunostaining results revealed expression of the early neuronal marker, Tuj-1, in PLLA-F3-effLuc cells in the motor-cortex-ablated area. We observed noninvasively that the mechanical support by PLLA scaffold increased the survival of implanted neural stem cells in the corticectomized rat. The image-guided approach easily proved that scaffolds could provide supportive effect to implanted cells, increasing their viability in terms of enhancing therapeutic efficacy of stem-cell therapy.  相似文献

The effects of extreme cold on the human body are not fully understood, there are also no reports on the effect of cryogenic temperatures on the levels of erythropoietin (EPO) and interleukin 3 (IL-3), two important factors that regulate hematopoiesis. Aim: determination of changes in peripheral blood cell counts and EPO and IL-3 levels induced by a series of 10, 20 and 30 standard whole-body cryostimulation (WBC) treatments. The study involved 45 men, experimental group (EXP, n = 30) subjected to 30 WBC treatments (−130°C, treatment duration: 3 minutes) and a control group (CON, n = 15). Blood samples were collected before the series of treatments and after 10, 20 and 30 treatments. After 10 and 20 treatments we observed lower red blood cell counts and hematocrit and hemoglobin levels compared to baseline (p<0.05) and the control group (p<0.05). Additionally we observed an increase in hemoglobin concentration in plasma (p<0.05), and bilirubin after 10 and 20 treatments, and a decrease in plasma concentration of haptoglobin after 10, 20 and 30 treatments (p<0.05). The number of leukocytes was higher after 10 and 20 WBC treatments compared to baseline and the CON group. EPO concentration in plasma was elevated and the concentration of IL-3 was lower after 10, 20 and 30 WBC treatments. The decrease in indices of the erythrocytic system, plasma hemoglobin and bilirubin, with a simultaneous decrease in haptoglobin concentrations after 10 and 20 WBC treatments, may be due to increased intravascular hemolysis. At the same time there was a small, but statistically significant increase in the concentration of EPO stimulated erythropoiesis which could facilitate a return of erythrocytic system indices to initial levels after 30 WBC treatments. Changes in the white blood cell system showed transient mobilization of this system under the influence of WBC.  相似文献

A novel class of thymidine phosphorylase (TP) inhibitors has been designed based on analogy to the enzyme substrate as well as known inhibitors. Flexible docking studies, using a homology model of human TP, of the designed N-(2,4-dioxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-thieno[3,2-d]pyrimidin-7-yl)-guanidines as well as their synthetic precursors provide insight into the observed experimental trends in binding affinity.  相似文献
