CO2 uptake by the cultivated hemiepiphytic cactus, Hylocereus undatus

The climate of the native tropical forest habitats of Hylocereus undatus, a hemiepiphytic cactus cultivated in 20 countries for its fruit, can help explain the response of its net CO2 uptake to environmental factors. Under wet conditions, about 85% of the total daily net CO₂ uptake occurs at night via Crassulacean acid metabolism, leading to a high water‐use efficiency. Total daily net CO₂ uptake is reduced 57% by only 10 days of drought, possibly involving stomatal closure induced by abscisic acid produced in the roots, which typically occupy a small substrate volume. Total daily net CO₂ uptake for H. undatus is maximal at day/night air temperatures of 30/20°C, optimal temperatures that are higher than those for desert cacti but representative of ambient temperatures in the tropics; its total daily net CO₂ uptake becomes zero at day/night air temperatures of 42/32°C. Stem damage occurs at 45°C for H. undatus, whose photosynthetic cells show little acclimation to high temperatures compared with other cacti and are also sensitive to low temperatures, ‐1.5°C killing half of these cells. Consistent with its shaded habitat, total daily net CO2 uptake is appreciable at a total daily PPF of only 2 mol m2 day' and is maximal at 20 mol m^?2 day^?1, above which photoinhibition reduces net CO₂ uptake. Net CO₂ uptake ability, which is highly correlated with stem nitrogen and chlorophyll contents, changes only gradually (halftimes of 2–3 months) as the concentration of applied N is changed. Doubling the atmospheric CO₂ concentration raises the total daily net CO₂ uptake of H. undatus by 34% under optimal conditions and by even larger percentages under adverse environmental conditions.     

Two Clip Domain Family of Serine Proteases and a Serine Protease Homolog from the Fall Webworm, Hyphantria cunea; cDNA Cloning and Characterization

Two types of serine proteases and a serine protease homologue cDNAs were isolated from Hyphantria cunea larvae induced immune response due to an injection of a microorganism through RT‐PCR and cDNA library screening, and their characteristics were examined. The isolated cDNAs are composed 2.1 kb, 2.2 kb, and 2.5 kb nucleotide each, which encoded 388, 390, 580 amino acid residues, and were designated as HcPE‐1, HcPE‐2 and HcPE‐3, respectively. They were revealed as serine proteases or a serine protease homologue with the clip domain through a database search. The deduced amino acid sequence comparison showed high homology of 72‐78% among them. Six Cys residues of the N‐terminal clip domain forming the disulfide bond, Cys residues of the catalytic domain, and Cys residues forming inter‐bridge between clip domain and catalytic domain were also well preserved. Three amino acid residues, His, Asp, and Ser, within the active site were perfectly conserved in HcPE‐2 and HcPE‐3, however, His was replaced with Gln¹⁷⁸ in HcPE‐1. The Arg residues (HcPE‐1, Arg¹³²; HcPE‐2, Arg¹³⁴; HcPE‐3, Arg³²⁵) known as the activation sites by proteolytic cleavage were preserved well in all three types of protein. In case of HcPE‐3, three continuous clip‐like domains existed in the N terminal. As the result of phylogenetic analysis, three clip domain family of protein from H. cunea make groups with arthropod proclotting enzyme precursor. Northern blot analysis showed all three genes were induced through an injection of Escherichia coli, but expression patterns were varied.     

悬钩子属种质的评价

在进行了７省悬钩子资源调查的基础上,在南京建立了悬钩子属田间基因库。３年来对田间基因库内保存并开花结果的３０个种进行了开花结果性状的记栽和评价。内容包括果实特征,糖、酸、维生素类、氨基酸、矿质元素含量分析,染色体计数等。分析了种间和种内多样性物存在及在良种选育中利用的可能性。     

广州抽水蓄能电站蓄水库蓄水初期浮游生物调查

对我国首座核电站配套工程的抽水蓄能电站水库蓄水初期的浮游生物进行了调查。蓄水水库由上下两水库组成。两水库的浮游生物种类组成显著不同。上水库浮游植物共记录到３０种（属）,浮游动物１２种（属）;下水库浮游植物１９种（属）;浮游动物２５种（属）。上下两水库浮游生物数量均较贫乏,表明浮游生物群落尚处于初期发育阶段,但在局部浅水处已出现小规模的蓝藻水花,认为是水库蓄水初期必然的结果     

Ginkgolide B production in cultured cells derived from Ginkgo biloba L. leaves

Callus cultures and cell suspension cultures derived from Ginkgo biloba L. leaves produced ginkgolidc B. In cell suspension cultures, the production reached a maximum by the 13th day of subculture and followed by a sharp decrease. The medium of Murashige and Skoog induced the highest ginkgolide B content in cultures while the medium of Schenk and Hildebrandt promoted cell growth. For the maximal production of ginkgolide B, cells were cultured in Murashige and Skoog medium modified to contain 1.0 mg/l of -naphthaleneacetic acid, 0.1 mg/1 of kinetin, 30 g/1 sucrose and 1.25 mM potassium phosphate with a molar ratio of ammonium to nitrate ions of 1 3.Abbreviations B5 Gamborg et al (1968) medium - GKB Ginkgolide B - MS Murashige and Skoog (1962) medium - NAA -naphthaleneacetic aicd - SH Schenk and Hildebrandt (1972) medium     

Chromatographic Evidence for the Presence of Multiple Tachykinins in the Bovine Adrenal Medulla

Among the mammalian tachykinins, substance P (SP) has been shown to be the most potent at modulating the response due to nicotinic acetylcholine receptor stimulation of bovine adrenal chromaffin cells. SP-like immunoreactivity has been detected in nerve terminals innervating the adrenal medulla; however, little is known of the presence of other tachykinins in this tissue. In this study, reverse-phase HPLC was used to fractionate peptides in bovine adrenal medullary extracts, and the fractions were analyzed by radioimmunoassay using antisera to SP or neurokinin A (NKA). The results show that both NKA- and SP-like immunoreactivities are present in the adrenal medulla. The presence of neurokinin B is also indicated. The presence of multiple tachykinins in this tissue raises questions as to their functions in the adrenal medulla.     

Studies on hemoglobin variants in Korean cattle

814 hemoglobin samples from Korean cattle were investigated by starch gel electrophoresis for the detection of hemoglobin variants. A new variant of cattle hemoglobin, called Hb, H, was recognized. It has a slower rate of migration than Hb A.
Hemoglobin types from 814 Korean cattle were as follows: 652 of Hb AA type (80.1 %), 133 of Hb AB (16.4 %), 12 of Hb AC (1.5 %), 9 of Hb BB (1.1 %), 2 of Hb BC (0.2 %), 4 of Hb AH (0.5 %), 1 of Hb CH (0.1 %), 1 of Hb HH (0.1 %). These figures correspond to the frequencies: Hb^A = 0.893, Hb^B = 0.093, Hb^c =0.009, Hb^H = 0.004.
Gene frequencies at the Hb locus in Korean cattle were compared among six population from different provinces. Generally, high frequencies of Hb^A were observed in each province.
