Feeding the fairy shrimp Streptocephalus (Anostraca - Crustacea) with the rotifer Anuraeopsis

Laboratory-cultured Streptocephalus torvicornis were offered 8 concentrations (from 6 to 800 ind. ml^–1) of Anuraeopsis fissa for periods of 2 h 30 min. Two size classes, small (male: 14.7 mm± 1.6, female: 15.4 mm± 1.3) and large (male: 20.0 mm±2.0, female: 23.1 mm± 1.5), of S. torvicornis were used. Functional response for large S. torvicornis (both sexes) plateaued at 400 rotifers ml^–1, while in small specimens it did so at 200 prey ml^–1. Females consumed significantly more (30%) prey than males. Large males consumed maximum 4730 rotifers h^–1, females 6560 h^–1.     

Historical biogeography and morphological differentiation ofStreptocephalus torvicornis (Waga) since the Würm III-glaciation

We argue that the Würm III glaciation eradicated possible European populations ofS. torvicornis, and that today, a reconquest of Europe takes place on two fronts.A western wave has reached the Pyrenees, an eastern one now occupies most of eastern and northern Europe. The western route probably started in the Maghreb, the eastern one in the Levant and the Ponto-Caspian. Animals in the west had to move north by crossing, at right angles, a series of east-west oriented river valleys and progressed slowly; animals in the east could move up river valleys extending north-east, and moved quickly. Italy was not occupied, becauseS.torvicornis is a warm stenotherm, and by the time the climate had warmed sufficiently for it to reach the southern shore of the mediterranean (ca 6000 BP), the gap with Italy was probably too large for a crossing. Cold-loving species (of the generaBranchipus, Chirocephalus) conversely, and could freely flow across the Central Mediterranean at low sea-levels (ca 12000 BP), and now occur in Italy (and the rest of Europe) as well as in Northern Africa.A prediction of our hypothesis is that the pioneer populations in Spain and Central Europe should have been isolated longest. Thisis tested and confirmed by their comparative morphology, and two subspecies,S. t. torvicornis andS. t. bucheti are reinstated.A gap across the Nile Valley where onlyS. rubricaudatus seems to occur, deserves further study.     

Characterization of the peptide-N4-(N-acetylglucosaminyl) asparagine amidase (PNGase Se) fromSilene alba cells

The peptide-N ⁴-(N-acetylglucosaminyl) asparagine amidase (PNGase Se) earlier described [Lhernould S., Karamanos Y., Bourgerie S., Strecker G., Julien R., Morvan H. (1992)Glycoconjugate J 9:191–97] was partially purified from culturedSilene alba cells using affinity chromatography. The enzyme is active between pH 3.0 and 6.5, and is stable in the presence of moderate concentrations of several other protein unfolding chemicals, but is readily inactivated by SDS. Although the enzyme cleaves the carbohydrate from a variety of animal and plant glycopeptides, it does not hydrolyse the carbohydrate from most of the corresponding unfolded glycoproteins in otherwise comparable conditions. Protracted release of the LHRH agonist avorelin (MF 6001) from two depot formulations in dogs and men

Avorelin is a new superagonist of naturalluteinizing-hormone-releasing-hormone. Avorelin hasbeen formulated in high molecular weight polylactic glycolic acid to afford protracted andcontinuous release of the peptide from subcutaneousimplants. Two different formulations (10 and 15 mg)were tested first in dogs and then in men during aclinical phase II trial. Chemical castration wasmaintained for at least 6 months in dogs withboth formulations. A similar duration of activity(approximately 6 months) was observed in men.     

Production of concentrated freeze-dried cultures of Bifidobacterium longumin k-carrageenan-locust bean gum gel

Bifidobacterium longum was immobilized in k-carrageenan/locust bean gum gel beads, and cultured in a medium containing Lactobacillus MRS broth and whey-permeate. The same beads were incubated for 5 successive batch fermentations and freeze-dried following mixing with a protective solution. Viable population in the beads increased from 8 3 10 7 to 4.7 3 10 10 cfu/g after three batch fermentations, but no further increase in viable cell population could be achieved in the last two fermentations. The freeze-dried culture contained 3 3 10 10 cfu/g with a survival rate of approximately 10%. Survival to freeze-drying of immobilized cells was as good as that of classical free-cell cultures. Stability of freeze-dried cultures during storage at minus 17, 4 and 20°C was not influenced by immobilization.     

Respiratory function of velopharyngeal constrictor muscles during wakefulness in normal adults

J. Appl.Physiol. 82(2): 584-591, 1997.The levator velipalatini (LVP) and the superior pharyngeal constrictor (SPC) influencevelopharyngeal patency and soft palate position, but their behaviorduring respiration is incompletely characterized. To further clarifytheir respiratory function, we recorded electromyographic activity(EMG) in the LVP and the SPC in awake normal subjects breathing orally.EMG data were obtained in six subjects for the LVP and in nine subjectsfor the SPC. EMG activity and timing and ventilation were measuredduring isocapnic hypoxia and hyperoxic hypercapnia. Phasic EMG activitywas inconsistently present during unstimulated oral breathing. Timingof EMG phasic activity was variable for both muscles. Peak LVP activitywas mainly or exclusively expiratory in three of six subjects. Peak SPCactivity was mainly or exclusively expiratory in five of nine subjects.With chemostimulation, recruitment of phasic activity was observed inthe LVP in four of six subjects and in the SPC in five of ninesubjects. Tonic activity increased in four of six subjects for the LVPand in three of nine subjects for the SPC. However, the response wasalinear, and intersubject as well as breath-to-breath variability wassubstantial. In conclusion, LVP and SPC are characterized by the highinter- and intrasubject variability of EMG activity, timing ofactivation, and response to chemostimulation.

     

Serum indole-3-acetic acid in control subjects and newly abstinent alcoholics after an oral loading with L-tryptophan: a preliminary study using liquid chromatography with amperometric detection

Described in this paper is a rapid, isocratic assay for serum indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). The sample preparation involves only protein precipitation using sulfosalicylic acid, and the sensitivity of amperometric detection is in the picogram range. The chromatographic analysis time is approximately 4 min. The devised method was used for a longitudinal study of IAA levels in serum samples from control subjects and newly abstinent alcoholics. Dietary variations were eliminated by administering a 2.0-g loading dose of L-Trp to all subjects investigated. The results are presented in the form of cumulative frequency polygons. Preliminary data indicate no differences in IAA levels between newly abstinent alcoholics and control subjects.

The discovery of Foraminifera and Ostracodesin the dark green, sandy-glauconitic marl clay in the Joux Valley (in the Vaudois Jura) suggests to date these sediments Middle and Upper Albian. The Ostracode associations are similar to those found in the Paris Basin, but different from those which characterize the subalpine region.     

Decouverte du genre Iowaphyllum (Tetracoralliaire) dans un biostrome eodevonien du Cotentin

After a few remarks on the coral fauna in deposits near La Roquelle in Cotentin, the genus Iowaphyllum is identifiedfor the first time in France. One species (I. bohemicum) is described here; it brings new paleogeographic and stratigraphic data.     

On the continental Copepod fauna of Morocco

A series of samples, collected in different parts of Morocco, contained 26 species and one subspecies of Copepoda. Ten among these are new to the fauna of Morocco and one is new to Science. Two species (Eucyclops hadjebensis Kiefer and Mixodiaptomus laciniatus atlantis Kiefer) are endemic to Morocco; Afrocyclops gibsoni Brady and Thermocyclops schuurmanae Kiefer are Ethiopan species. The former reaches its limit of Northern extent East of the Atlas mountains; the latter is a pluvial relict. The remaining species have either a cosmopolitan, circummediterranean or North-African distribution, with the exception of Cyclops abyssorum mauretaniae which is a southern element of the Eurasiatic genus Cyclops. Its taxonomical status is reviewed in some detail. Thermocyclops infrequens Kiefer is synonymized with T. schuurmanae Kiefer. It is concluded that the largest gaps in our knowledge of the Copepoda of Morocco are now in the group of the Harpacticoida.Contribution no. 14 of the biological expedition of the University of Gent (Belgium) to Morocco, July–August 1971
