The objective structured interview for medical student selection

An objective structured interview is an integral part of the process of selecting and admitting applicants to study medicine at this university. During the nine years (to the end of 1986) that the interview has been used 1600 candidates were interviewed out of roughly 13 000 applicants, and from these, 584 students were admitted to the course. Analysis of the interview data was carried out based on two aspects of student progress: graduation with honours and failure to complete the course of study.The interview as a whole, and especially some of the subscales, appears to identify students who may fail to complete the course: it may also help to predict which students are likely to graduate with honours.     

Insertional inactivation of a gene which controls expression of vancomycin resistance on plasmid pHKK100

Expression of inducible high level vancomycin resistance (Vmr) in enterococci appears to require other plasmid-encoded genes in addition to the previously described structural genes vanA and vanH. Tn917 mutagenesis was used to identify such a region in the Vmr plasmid pHKK100. Insertional inactivation of a 693-bp open reading frame upstream from vanH resulted in complete loss of Vmr. This putative 26,642-Da protein has been designated VanR.     

A mite survey in the dumpsters for urban solid rubbish

Summary The presence of house dust mites and storage mites in dumpsters was investigated in 3 different areas of Venice hinterland. The aim of this study was to find a relationship between some reported respiratory symptoms among 6 workers who were responsible for moving the dumpsters to the truck and the bio-aerosol released from such operation. These symptoms were closely related to the work and after allergological evaluation we found sensitisation to house dust mites in all 6 employees. The mine exposure in the workplace was assessed by a standardized sampling and analysis of dust obtained after brushing the inside surfaces of dumpsters. In 50% of the specimens (10/20) we found mites belonging to the following families: Pyroglyphidae (Dermatophagoides spp.), Acaridae (Acarus siro) and a lower amount of Cheyletidae (Cheyletus spp.). An indirect test (guanine test) was also performed and gave positivity in 16 dust samples (80%). The insides of dumpsters showed to be an optimal environment for mites survival and reproduction because of cracks and grooves on the walls, the high humidity level and the presence of mould. These mites probably come from dwelling places and other environments (markets, slaughters-houses, farms, etc.). This suggests that mites allergens can be released during rubbish discharging from the dumpsters and represent a possible risk for the employees.     

Antioxidant depletion in aortic crossclamping ischemia: increase of the plasma alpha-tocopheryl quinone/alpha-tocopherol ratio.

To assess whether oxidative stress contributes to the ischemia/reperfusion injury of aortic surgery, the contents of alpha-tocopherol, alpha-tocopheryl quinone, ascorbate, lipid-derived malondialdehyde, protein thiols, cholesterol, and lactate were analyzed in plasma samples from 24 patients subjected to aortic crossclamping. alpha-Tocopherol, ascorbate, and protein thiols decreased during ischemia, whereas alpha-tocopheryl quinone increased in all but two cases, doubling on average in proportion to alpha-tocopherol. Upon reperfusion alpha-tocopherol, ascorbate, and protein thiols remained low, whereas alpha-tocopheryl quinone returned to the preischemic level. Lipid-derived malondialdehyde (a measure of lipid hydroperoxides) increased significantly only during reperfusion. The results suggest that oxidative stress occurs simultaneously with ischemia/reperfusion during aortic surgery, and that measurement of the tocopheryl quinone/tocopherol ratio may shed new light on the underlying pathological events.     

Comparative studies of Babesia spp. from white-tailed and sika deer

Babesia odocoilei from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Texas (USA) and B. capreoli isolated from sika deer (Cervus nippon) in Ireland were compared morphologically and antigenically. Babesia odocoilei and B. capreoli paired pyriforms resembled each other closely when in sika deer, but B. odocoilei pyriforms in white-tailed deer were slightly different. Babesia odocoilei in white-tailed deer also differed from B. odocoilei and B. capreoli in sika deer in the frequency of its developmental forms. Indirect immunofluorescence antibody test titres showed that there was some antigen cross-reactivity, but not as much as between B. capreoli and the bovine parasite, B. divergens. The Babesia spp. from deer that we studied appear to be distinct but related species. The low infectivity of B. odocoilei for a splenectomised sika deer suggests that sika deer in North America are probably not very susceptible to this parasite in the wild.
