Secular trend in height in Al Ain-United Arab Emirates

Correlation between cycles in human stature and those in economic variables is well established. A recent review of international trends in this area provided information from most parts of the world but none on Arabs in the Middle East or more specifically the gulf region.The United Arab Emirates experienced a transformation in economic and social life followed the discovery of oil in the late 1960s and the wealth that it generated. No data is available on human growth at this period of time because its population never had health services prior to the 1970s. A study on conventional cardiovascular risk factors in 2004-2005 included 817 randomly selected national adults (≥18 years) from both genders. The relationship between height and age in this study showed both men and women have increased in height with time demonstrating the secular change in height most likely a result of changing socioeconomic factors.     

Metabolic characteristics of bacterial cells entrapped in beaded calcium alginate and/or pectate gels

A mixture of heterotrophic bacteria and collection strains ofEscherichia coli andPseudomonas fluorescens were immobilized in calcium alginate or pectate gels. Comparison of respiratory activity, substrate uptake and biosynthetic capacity of immobilized cells showed that both types of carriers permit a prolonged preservation of metabolic activity but the transfer of substances through the gel is faster in the pectate. Morphological changes include some intracellular structures, partial shrinkage of the plasma membrane of immobilized cells, and transformation of a rod-like cell shape to an oval one.     

Laboratory investigation and infection control of cholera in Kingston,Ont.

Vibrio cholerae, biotype El Tor, was isolated in a hospital laboratory in Kingston, Ont. in 1974. Confirmation and complete identification by the Ontario regional and provincial public health laboratories was obtained within 3 days. Institution of well established infection-control and public health measures prevented spread of the infection within the hospital and the community.     

Secretory carcinoma of the breast. Report of a case with fine needle aspiration biopsy

A case of secretory carcinoma of the breast in a 48-year-old woman studied by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is presented. The prominent intracytoplasmic vacuolization and numerous signet-ring forms and the presence of sheets of neoplastic cells with large intercellular spaces should permit its diagnosis in FNA specimens. The differential diagnosis of this rare lesion from other breast neoplasms that show similar features is discussed.     

Inhibition of lymphoproliferative response and its restoration with a glucan immunomodulator in mice with experimental larval toxocarosis

A high infective dose ofToxocara canis eggs (2 500 eggs per mouse) induced a partial immunosuppression in mice, manifested by inhibition of the proliferative response of splenic T and B cells to polyclonal activators. A glucan immunomodulator given to infected animals at the beginning of the experiment showed a marked stimulative and restorative effect on the parasite-suppressed lymphoproliferative response. The ability ofT. canis to migrate in the host was reduced in glucan-treated animals by 27%.
