Root-associated methanotrophic bacteria were enriched from three common aquatic macrophytes: Pontederia cordata, Sparganium eurycarpum, and Sagittaria latifolia. At least seven distinct taxa belonging to groups I and II were identified and presumptively assigned to the genera Methylosinus, Methylocystis, Methylomonas, and Methylococcus. Four of these strains appeared to be novel on the basis of partial 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis. The root-methanotroph association did not appear to be highly specific, since multiple methanotrophs were isolated from each of the three plant species. Group II methanotrophs were isolated most frequently; though less common, group I isolates accounted for three of the seven distinct methanotrophs. Apparent Km values for methane uptake by representative cultures ranged from 3 to >17 μM; for five of the eight cultures examined, apparent Km values agreed well with apparent Km estimates for plant roots, suggesting that these strains may be representative of those active in situ.  相似文献

A single accession ofCrepis alpina, P.I. 326551 from Turkey, showed good agronomic potential for crop development. The seed oil contains more than 70 percent crepenynic acid. Seed retention and plant habit are excellent. Seed yields ranged from 11 7 to 1,800 kg/ha. Spring and fall plantings were successful at several locations. Fall plantings may be preferred because of earlier maturity. Since early seedling development is slow, weed competition may be severe. Direct combining should be feasible, but threshing problems might arise because of the small, long-beaked seed. Improvements in yield and other agronomic characteristics should be possible through breeding. More germ plasm would provide a broader base of plant variability.  相似文献

In man, hematologic abnormalities precede the development of acute myeloblastic leukemia in about one-third of individuals. This preleukemic state may represent a stage of adult leukemia wherein small numbers of leukemic cells are present and the normal marrow stem cell compartment has not been seriously compromised. A syndrome resembling human preleukemia occurs in cats infected with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). This disorder is characterized by anemia, leukopenia or thrombocytopenia occurring weeks or months prior to the development of feline acute leukemia. The natural occurrence of this syndrome in this domestic animal population makes it a potential model of human preleukemia. Initial poor results of therapy of human preleukemia presently prohibit one from carrying out controlled trials with chemotherapeutic agents in such a group of patients. Preliminary trials with chemo- and/or immunotherapy may be more easily attempted with FeLV infected preleukemic cats.  相似文献

We found significant differences in the fatty acid composition of several bovine brain, egg yolk and sheep erythrocyte sphingomyelins. These differences in fatty acid composition influence the thermal behavior of hydrated sphingomyelin as recorded by differentail scanning calorimetry. Significant differences were also found in the temperature and complexity of the order-disorder phase transitions of bovine brain sphingomyelin obtained from different sources which, in general, correlate with the relative content of the saturated fatty acids (palmitic (C16:0) and stearic acid (C18:0) acids) and the long unsaturated nervonic acid (C24:1).  相似文献

A set of lambda dilv phage have been used in a deletion mapping procedure to determine the location of two previously characterized ilvO alleles. In contrast to earlier conclusions derived from three-factor crosses and episome-shortening techniques with phage P1, the order found is ilvG-ilvO-ilvEDA. A three-factor cross with phage P1 is described that is not consistent with this location for an ilvO allele. Further analysis of this particular three-factor cross revealed than an artifact attributable to a mutual syntrophism had skewed the apparent frequency of inheritance of the ilvO locus. The role of mutual syntrophism is discussed as a source of mapping errors for the ilvO locus. The value of this set of lambda dilv phage and this mapping procedure for obtaining comparatively unambiguous data on the locations of the ilv structural and regulatory genes is demonstrated.  相似文献

Rat pups suckled by dams fed a zinc-deficient diet developed higher levels of dental caries following a caries-test challenge than pups suckled by dams fed a zinc-adequate diet. The zinc deficient treatment was administered during the mineralization stage of tooth development before the molars erupted. The data shows that suboptimal zinc nutriture was associated with an increase in dental caries.Fluoride, a trace element, is recognized as a factor in preventing dental caries and its use has had a significant impact on dental health in this country. However, the possible roles of other trace elements have not been closely examined. Zinc is a trace element important to bone mineralization as well as in general nutrition.The effects on dental caries produced by the addition of zinc to rat diets have been reported (1, 2, 3). In those investigations, however, zinc supplements were added to diets that were adequate in zinc. Moreover, zinc supplements were fed after the teeth had appeared in the oral cavity. Because the critical period of tooth maturation occurs before eruption (4), post-eruptive zinc supplements probably should not markedly influence the development and, specifically, the mineralization of the tooth. Therefore, we investigated the influence of pre-eruptive zinc deficiency on caries development in rats.  相似文献

The syndecans are the major family of transmembrane proteoglycans, usually bearing multiple heparan sulfate chains. They are present on virtually all nucleated cells of vertebrates and are also present in invertebrates, indicative of a long evolutionary history. Genetic models in both vertebrates and invertebrates have shown that syndecans link to the actin cytoskeleton and can fine-tune cell adhesion, migration, junction formation, polarity and differentiation. Although often associated as co-receptors with other classes of receptors (e.g. integrins, growth factor and morphogen receptors), syndecans can nonetheless signal to the cytoplasm in discrete ways. Syndecan expression levels are upregulated in development, tissue repair and an array of human diseases, which has led to the increased appreciation that they may be important in pathogenesis not only as diagnostic or prognostic agents, but also as potential targets. Here, their functions in development and inflammatory diseases are summarized, including their potential roles as conduits for viral pathogen entry into cells.  相似文献
