Prairie reconstructions are a critical component of preservation of the imperiled tallgrass prairie ecosystem in the Midwestern United States. Sustainability of this endeavor depends on establishment of persistent cover of planted native species and resistance to noxious weeds. The goal of this study was to understand the influence of early reconstruction practices on long‐term outcomes. Twelve replicates of three planting methods (dormant‐season broadcast, growing‐season broadcast, and growing‐season drill) and three seed mix richness levels (10, 20, or 34 species), fully crossed in a completely randomized design were planted in 2005 on nine former agricultural fields located in Iowa and Minnesota. Cover by species was estimated in 2005–2007, 2010, and 2015. In 2015, cover of planted species, native nonplanted species, and exotic species were similar to those recorded in 2010. Cover of the noxious weed Cirsium arvense had also declined by an average of 49% without herbicide from a peak in 2007 to low stable levels from 2010 to 2015. Richness of planted forbs, on the other hand, were still increasing in high‐richness broadcast treatments (e.g. 17–59% increase 2010–1015 in Minnesota). Two results in 2015 are reasons for concern: cover of planted species is only slightly over 50% in both Minnesota and Iowa, though with forbs still increasing, this may improve; and the cool‐season exotic grasses Poa pratensis and Bromus inermis are increasing at both Minnesota and Iowa sites. Control of these invasive grasses will be necessary, but care will be needed to avoid negative impacts of control methods on natives.  相似文献

When genotypes differ in niche-constructing traits, genotypes are expected to differ in which environments they experience, providing a novel causal relationship between genotypes, environments, and behavior. Such genetic variation in niche construction (or, more precisely, environment construction) is predicted to be especially important for social environments, yet the quantitative-genetic parameters governing such variation are still poorly understood. Here, we examine genetic variation and cross-sex genetic correlations for social environment-constructing behaviors. We focus on whether genetic variation in patch use—the tendency to spend time near food patches where conspecifics may be present—and group-size preference—the specific group size chosen when individuals are affiliating—is correlated or decoupled across sexes in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. Across three choice treatments, we find genotype and sex differences in how much time individuals spend near patches, and which group sizes they prefer. We find that the genetic basis of patch use is strongly coupled across sexes, whereas the genetic basis of group-size preference is completely decoupled across sexes. We discuss how these findings augment and complicate our understanding of the evolutionary genetics of social behaviors.  相似文献

Background

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Epidemiological risk factors for CRC included alcohol intake, which is mainly metabolized to acetaldehyde by alcohol dehydrogenase and further oxidized to acetate by aldehyde dehydrogenase; consequently, the role of genes in the alcohol metabolism pathways is of particular interest. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between SNPs in ADH1B and ALDH2 genes and CRC risk, and also the main effect of alcohol consumption on CRC risk in the study population.

Methodology/Principal Findings

SNPs from ADH1B and ALDH2 genes, included in alcohol metabolism pathway, were genotyped in 1694 CRC cases and 1851 matched controls from the Molecular Epidemiology of Colorectal Cancer study. Information on clinicopathological characteristics, lifestyle and dietary habits were also obtained. Logistic regression and association analysis were conducted. A positive association between alcohol consumption and CRC risk was observed in male participants from the Molecular Epidemiology of Colorectal Cancer study (MECC) study (OR = 1.47; 95%CI = 1.18-1.81). Moreover, the SNPs rs1229984 in ADH1B gene was found to be associated with CRC risk: under the recessive model, the OR was 1.75 for A/A genotype (95%CI = 1.21-2.52; p-value = 0.0025). A path analysis based on structural equation modeling showed a direct effect of ADH1B gene polymorphisms on colorectal carcinogenesis and also an indirect effect mediated through alcohol consumption.

Conclusions/Significance

Genetic polymorphisms in the alcohol metabolism pathways have a potential role in colorectal carcinogenesis, probably due to the differences in the ethanol metabolism and acetaldehyde oxidation of these enzyme variants.  相似文献

Background

The genus Micronycteris is a diverse group of phyllostomid bats currently comprising 11 species, with diploid number (2n) ranging from 26 to 40 chromosomes. The karyotypic relationships within Micronycteris and between Micronycteris and other phyllostomids remain poorly understood. The karyotype of Micronycteris hirsuta is of particular interest: three different diploid numbers were reported for this species in South and Central Americas with 2n?=?26, 28 and 30 chromosomes. Although current evidence suggests some geographic differentiation among populations of M. hirsuta based on chromosomal, morphological, and nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers, the recognition of new species or subspecies has been avoided due to the need for additional data, mainly chromosomal data.

Results

We describe two new cytotypes for Micronycteris hirsuta (MHI) (2n?=?26 and 25, NF?=?32), whose differences in diploid number are interpreted as the products of Robertsonian rearrangements. C-banding revealed a small amount of constitutive heterochromatin at the centromere and the NOR was located in the interstitial portion of the short arm of a second pair, confirmed by FISH. Telomeric probes hybridized to the centromeric regions and weakly to telomeric regions of most chromosomes. The G-banding analysis and chromosome painting with whole chromosome probes from Carollia brevicauda (CBR) and Phyllostomus hastatus (PHA) enabled the establishment of genome-wide homologies between MHI, CBR and PHA.

Conclusions

The karyotypes of Brazilian specimens of Micronycteris hirsuta described here are new to Micronycteris and reinforce that M. hirsuta does not represent a monotypic taxon. Our results corroborate the hypothesis of karyotypic megaevolution within Micronycteris, and strong evidence for this is that the entire chromosome complement of M. hirsuta was shown to be derivative with respect to species compared in this study.

Genotype‐by‐environment interaction (G × E), that is, genetic variation in phenotypic plasticity, is a central concept in ecology and evolutionary biology. G×E has wide‐ranging implications for trait development and for understanding how organisms will respond to environmental change. Although G × E has been extensively documented, its presence and magnitude vary dramatically across populations and traits. Despite this, we still know little about why G × E is so evident in some traits and populations, but minimal or absent in others. To encourage synthetic research in this area, we review diverse hypotheses for the underlying biological causes of variation in G × E. We extract common themes from these hypotheses to develop a more synthetic understanding of variation in G × E and suggest some important next steps.  相似文献

The permanently eutrophic Sundays Estuary experiences recurrent harmful algal blooms (HABs) of Heterosigma akashiwo (Raphidophyceae). This study aimed to identify the environmental variables shaping phytoplankton community composition and succession patterns during a typical spring/summer harmful algal bloom (HAB) period. Monitoring of abiotic and phytoplankton variables was undertaken over the period of a month in 2016. Surface water salinity corresponding to mesohaline conditions (9 to 12) was a prerequisite for site selection. During the study, two HABs (>550 µg Chl a l?1) of H. akashiwo occurred, each lasting for approximately a week in duration. Analyses highlighted nutrient depletion (i.e. nitrate and phosphate concentrations) as the key constraint on bloom duration. When the density of H. akashiwo decreased, the community composition became more diverse with species belonging to Bacillariophyceae and Dinophyceae becoming more abundant; albeit to a lesser degree (<180 µg Chl a l?1). Dissolved oxygen shifted from super-saturated conditions (>14 mg l?1) during peak HAB conditions, to instances of bottom water oxygen depletion (2–4 mg l?1) during the decay phase. These findings highlight the potential severity of transforming a catchment from natural to one that is highly regulated by agricultural practices, while also emphasising the need for management intervention.  相似文献

Bat abundance and activity in deserts is affected by the distribution of water sources. Kuhl’s pipistrelle (Pipistrellus kuhlii) is one of several bat species that penetrated the Negev desert from Mediterranean habitats following anthropogenic development, and potentially competes with desert dwelling bats of the same guild. Pipistrellus kuhlii is an obligate drinker requiring a clear ‘swoop zone’ to drink. Thus, to reduce the competitive load that P. kuhlii has on desert dwelling species, we tested the effectiveness of obstructions above water surfaces, which we hypothesised would reduce the drinking ability of P. kuhlii, thus providing desert species a competitive edge. We obstructed the water surface of a swimming pool and successfully prevented P. kuhlii from drinking. Next, we manipulated natural water sources used by bats for foraging. This was done on two spatial and temporal scales: on 11 adjacent ephemeral water pools in Nahal Zin where each treatment was applied for several nights and on eight isolated natural pools in the Negev where treatments were alternated every 20 min. Manipulation of adjacent pools had no effect on activity levels of bats, but in isolated pools, the obstruction reduced the proportion of P. kuhlii activity by up to 15%. Although this tool cannot be used for management without further examination of its long-term effects on other bats and wildlife, this study does demonstrate its feasibility. Conservation schemes aiming to mitigate effects of undesirable species can be designed by identifying ecological differences between competing species, and manipulating the environment accordingly.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of moderate aerobic training on functional, anthropometric, biochemical, and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) parameters on women with metabolic syndrome (MS). Fifteen untrained women with MS performed moderate aerobic training for 15 weeks, without modifications of dietary behaviours. Functional, anthropometric, biochemical, control diet record and HRQOL parameters were assessed before and after the training. Despite body weight maintenance, the patients presented decreases in waist circumference (P = 0.001), number of MS components (P = 0.014), total cholesterol (P = 0.049), HDL cholesterol (P = 0.004), LDL cholesterol (P = 0.027), myeloperoxidase activity (P = 0.002) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances levels (P = 0.006). There were no differences in total energy, carbohydrate, protein and lipid intake pre- and post-training. Furthermore, improvements in the HRQOL subscales of physical functioning (P = 0.03), role-physical (P = 0.039), bodily pain (P = 0.048), general health (P = 0.046) and social functioning scoring (P = 0.011) were reported. Despite the absence of weight loss, aerobic training induced beneficial effects on functional, anthropometric, biochemical and HRQOL parameters in women with MS.  相似文献

As systemic delivery of O2 (QO2 = QT X CaO2) is reduced during progressive hemorrhage, the O2 extraction ratio [(CaO2 - CVO2)/CaO2] increases until a critical delivery is reached below which O2 uptake (VO2) becomes limited by delivery (O2 supply dependence). When tissue metabolic activity and O2 demand are increased or reduced, the critical QO2 required to maintain VO2 should rise or fall accordingly, unless other changes in the distribution of a limited QO2 precipitate the onset of O2 supply dependence at a different critical extraction ratio. We compared the critical QO2 and critical extraction ratio in 23 normothermic (38 degrees C), hyperthermic (41 degrees C), or hypothermic (34 decrees C) dogs during stepwise reduction in delivery produced by bleeding, as arterial O2 content was maintained. Dogs were anesthetized, paralyzed, and mechanically ventilated. Hypothermia reduced whole-body VO2 by 31%, whereas hyperthermia increased VO2 by 20%. The critical QO2 was significantly reduced during hypothermia (5.6 +/- 0.95 ml.min-1.kg-1) (P less than 0.05) and increased during hyperthermia (8.9 +/- 1.1) (P approximately equal to 0.06) compared with normothermic controls (7.4 +/- 1.2). The extraction ratio at the onset of supply dependency was significantly increased in hyperthermia (0.76 +/- 0.05) compared with hypothermia (0.65 +/- 0.10) (P less than 0.05), and the normothermic critical extraction was 0.71 +/- 0.1. These results suggest that higher body temperatures are associated with an improved ability to maintain a VO2 independent of QO2, since a higher fraction of the delivered O2 can be extracted before the onset of O2 supply dependence, relative to lower body temperatures.  相似文献
