The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method has been used to calculate SARs and induced currents involving whole-body or partial-body exposures of models to spatially uniform or nonuniform (far-field or near-field), to sinusoidally varying EM fields, or to transient fields such as those associated with electromagnetic pulses. However, a weakness of the FDTD algorithm is that the dispersion of the tissue's dielectric properties is ignored and frequency-independent properties are assumed. Although this is permissible for continuous-wave or narrow-band irradiation, the results may be highly erroneous for short pulses, in which ultra-wide bandwidths are involved. In some recent publications, procedures are described for one- and two-dimensional problems for media in which the complex permittivity epsilon * (omega) may be described by a single-order Debye relaxation equation or a modified version thereof. These procedures based on a convolution integral describing D(t) in terms of E(t) cannot be extended to human tissues for which multiterm Debye relaxation equations must generally be used. We describe here a new differential-equation approach that can be used for general dispersive media. We illustrate the use of this approach by one- and three-dimensional examples of media for which epsilon * (omega) is given by a multiterm Debye equation, and for an approximate two-thirds muscle-equivalent model of the human body. Based on a single run involving a Gaussian pulse, the frequency-dependent FDTD [(FD)2TD] method allows calculations of SARs and induced currents at various frequencies by taking the Fourier components of the induced E fields. Sensory and cognitive impairments have been documented in diabetic humans and
animals, but the pathophysiology of diabetes in the central nervous system is
poorly understood. Because a high glucose level disrupts gap junctional
communication in various cell types and astrocytes are extensively coupled by
gap junctions to form large syncytia, the influence of experimental diabetes on
gap junction channel-mediated dye transfer was assessed in astrocytes in tissue
culture and in brain slices from diabetic rats. Astrocytes grown in
15–25 mmol/l glucose had a slow-onset, poorly reversible decrement in
gap junctional communication compared with those grown in 5.5 mmol/l glucose.
Astrocytes in brain slices from adult STZ (streptozotocin)-treated rats at
20–24 weeks after the onset of diabetes also exhibited reduced dye
transfer. In cultured astrocytes grown in high glucose, increased oxidative
stress preceded the decrement in dye transfer by several days, and gap
junctional impairment was prevented, but not rescued, after its manifestation by
compounds that can block or reduce oxidative stress. In sharp contrast with
these findings, chaperone molecules known to facilitate protein folding could
prevent and rescue gap junctional impairment, even in the presence of elevated
glucose level and oxidative stress. Immunostaining of Cx (connexin) 43 and 30,
but not Cx26, was altered by growth in high glucose. Disruption of astrocytic
trafficking of metabolites and signalling molecules may alter interactions among
astrocytes, neurons and endothelial cells and contribute to changes in brain
function in diabetes. Involvement of the microvasculature may contribute to
diabetic complications in the brain, the cardiovascular system and other

Summary The kinetics of oxidation of aqueous acidic ferrous sulphate by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been studied in a batch reactor. The contribution of cell wall envelopes to the oxidation rate has been shown to be negligible. A model which accounts for the oxidation of Fe2 +, death of bacteria due to Fe3 + poisoning, existence of an optimal pH and precipitation of Fe3 + has been proposed. The model is able to predict the concentration of Fe2 + and pH quite satisfactorily. The predictions of Fe3 + are not so accurate because of simplifying assumptions made about its precipitation.

The advances made in quantifying electromagnetic absorption and its distribution for various exposure profiles are described. The conditions that have been studied extensively are: free-space irradiation and its variations, such as the presence of ground and reflecting surfaces and other humans in close proximity. Using an inhomogeneous block model of man, work has recently been extended to leakage-type near-fields such as those from RF heat sealers and other electronic equipment. Projections are made for the extension of this work to evaluate coupled near-fields, design of multielement near-field applicators to obtain physician-prescribed uniform or nonuniform rates of regional heating, and for the inverse scattering problem necessary for electromagnetic biomedical imaging. Accurate information about the dielectric properties of various tissues becomes increasingly important for proper inhomogeneous modeling of man. 相似文献

Cyclic GMP Reduces Ventricular Myocyte Stunning after Simulated Ischemia–Reperfusion 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We tested the hypothesis that the second messenger activated by nitric oxide, cyclic GMP, would reduce the effects of myocyte stunning following simulated ischemia-reperfusion and that this was related to cyclic GMP protein kinase. Ventricular cardiac myocytes were isolated from New Zealand White rabbits (n = 8). Cell shortening was measured by a video edge detector and protein phosphorylation was determined autoradiographically after SDS gel electrophoresis. Cell shortening data were acquired at: (i) baseline followed by 8-Bromo-cGMP 10(-6) M (8-Br-cGMP) and then KT 5823 10(-6) M (cyclic GMP protein kinase inhibitor) and (ii) simulated ischemia (20 min of 95% N(2)-5% CO(2) at 37 degrees C) followed by simulated reperfusion (reoxygenation) with addition of 8-Br-cGMP 10(-6) M followed by KT 5823 10(-6) M, (iii) addition of 8-Br-cGMP prior to ischemia followed by the addition of KT 5823 10(-6) M after 30 min of reoxygenation. In the control group, 8-Br-cGMP 10(-6) M decreased percentage shortening (%short) (5.0 +/- 0.6 vs 3.8 +/- 0. 4) and the maximum velocity (V(max), microm/s) (48.6 +/- 6.9 vs 40.2 +/- 6.4). KT 5823 10(-6) M added after 8-Br-cGMP partially restored %short (4.6 +/- 0.5) and V(max) (46.6 +/- 8.0). After stunning, baseline myocytes had decreased %short (3.4 +/- 0.2) and V(max) (36. 0 +/- 4.2). After the addition of 8-Br-cGMP, the %short (2.7 +/- 0. 2) and V(max) (27.6 +/- 2.5) decreased further. The addition of KT 5823 did not change either the %short or the V(max). The myocytes with 8-Br-cGMP during ischemia had increased %short (4.2 +/- 0.2) and V(max) (37.2 +/- 3.4) when compared to the stunned group. The addition of KT 5823 did not significantly alter %short (3.3 +/- 0.4) or V(max) (29.2 +/- 5.0) in the myocytes pretreated with 8-Br-cGMP. Protein phosphorylation was increased by 8-Br-cGMP in control and stunned myocytes. KT 5823 blocked this effect in control but not stunned myocytes, suggesting some change in the cyclic GMP protein kinase. Ischemia-reperfusion produced myocyte stunning that was reduced when 8-Br-cGMP was added prior to but not after ischemia. 相似文献

Summary Experiments on the leaching of copper from chalcopyrite mineral by the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans show that, in the presence of adequate amounts of sulphide, iron-grown bacteria preferentially oxidise sulphur in the ore (through direct attachment) rather than ferrous sulphate in solution. At 20% pulp density, the leaching initially takes place by a predominantly direct mechanism. The cell density in the liquid phase increases, but the Fe2+ is not oxidised. However, in the later stages when less solid substrate is available and the cell density becomes very high, the bacteria start oxidising Fe2+ in the liquid phase, thus contributing to the indirect mechanism of leaching. Contrary to expectations, the rate of leaching increased with increasing particle size in spite of the decreasing specific surface area. This has been found to be due to increasing attachment efficiency with increase in particle size.
