BACKGROUND: The mediastinum is an uncommon site for liposarcoma, with <1 % of all tumors occurring in this site. CASE: A 40-year-old woman presented with superior vena caval syndrome. Radiologic investigations revealed the presence of a large soft tissue mass occupying the anterior and middle mediastinum. A computed tomography (CT)-guided fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) sample showed the presence of fibrillary myxoid material with arborizing blood vessels and atypical lipoblasts. A diagnosis of myxold liposarcoma was made, which was later confirmed on bistopathology. CONCLUSION: The mediastinum is a challenging area for FNAC, which is a useful tool for accurate diagnosis. Awareness of the presence of liposarcoma is important for its recognition. 相似文献

Human Nipah virus (NiV) infection in Bangladesh is a fatal disease that can be transmitted from bats to humans who drink contaminated raw date palm sap collected overnight during the cold season. Our study aimed to understand date palm sap consumption habits of rural residents and factors associated with consumption. In November-December 2012 the field team interviewed adult respondents from randomly selected villages from Rajbari and Kushtia Districts in Bangladesh. We calculated the proportion of people who consumed raw sap and had heard about a disease from raw sap consumption. We assessed the factors associated with raw sap consumption by calculating prevalence ratios (PR) adjusted for village level clustering effects. Among the 1,777 respondents interviewed, half (50%) reported drinking raw sap during the previous sap collection season and 37% consumed raw sap at least once per month. Few respondents (5%) heard about NiV. Thirty-seven percent of respondents reported hearing about a disease transmitted through raw sap consumption, inclusive of a 10% who related it with milder illness like diarrhea, vomiting or indigestion rather than NiV. Respondents who harvested date palm trees in their household were more likely to drink sap than those who did not own date palm trees (79% vs. 65% PR 1.2, 95% CI 1.1–1.3, p<0.001). When sap was available, respondents who heard about a disease from raw sap consumption were just as likely to drink it as those who did not hear about a disease (69% vs. 67%, PR 1.0, 95% CI 0.9–1.1, p = 0.512). Respondents’ knowledge of NiV was low. They might not have properly understood the risk of NiV, and were likely to drink sap when it was available. Implementing strategies to increase awareness about the risks of NiV and protect sap from bats might reduce the risk of NiV transmission. 相似文献

A simple and versatile method is developed for covalently binding a protein ligand onto a matrix irrespective of functional groups either on the ligand or the matrix. Prerequisite of the method is a novel proteinaceous photolinker having multiple light-activable functional groups. We have made photoreactive-BSA – a proteinaceous photolinker by the reaction of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with excess of 1-fluoro-2-nitro-4-azidobenzene (FNAB). When an enzyme is placed on an inert polystyrene matrix in presence of photoreactive-BSA and exposed to light the later forms highly reactive nitrenes some of which bind to the matrix and the rest to the ligand resulting simultaneous formation of covalent bonds with the matrix and the enzyme. The method is further exemplified by performing ELISA by covalent binding of antigen or antibody on a polystyrene microtiter plate in just 30 min using photoreactive-BSA. ELISA carried out in less than 3 h using photoreactive-BSA showed comparable results with that of conventional ELISA carried out in 18 h. Thus the method is potentially useful for rapid ELISA or covalent immobilization of ligands onto an inert surface without prior activation. 相似文献

A simple and mild procedure is developed for the preparation of an activated polymer surface, used for immobilization of a protein ligand through a covalent linkage. Activation of the polymer surface is carried out by attaching an active functional group through 1-fluoro-2-nitro-4-azidobenzene (FNAB). UV irradiation of FNAB transforms its azido group into a highly reactive nitrene, which binds with the inert polymer surface, whereas the active fluoro group of FNAB, now part of the polymer, remains intact. Covalent linkage between the ligand and the inert surface is established through this active fluoro group in a thermochemical reaction. The photochemical step is carried out under dry conditions to exclude the possibility of undesirable reactions between the solvent and the highly reactive nitrene. The method can be used for activation of different inert polymer surfaces having carbon hydrogen bonds. The efficacy of our method is demonstrated by immobilizing horseradish peroxidase on an activated polystyrene surface. The enzyme, immobilized through the photolinker, is found to give a twofold increase in absorbance with the substrate as compared to the directly adsorbed enzyme. The method may have many applications in the preparation of bioreactors, biostrips, and biosensors, and in diagnostic tests involving the ELISA technique. 相似文献

Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells(ADSCs) are a treatment cell source for patients with chronic liver injury. ADSCs are characterized by being harvested from the patient's own subcutaneous adipose tissue, a high cell yield(i.e., reduced immune rejection response), accumulation at a disease nidus, suppression of excessive immune response, production of various growth factors and cytokines, angiogenic effects, antiapoptotic effects, and control of immune cells via cellcell interaction. We previously showed that conditioned medium of ADSCs promoted hepatocyte proliferation and improved the liver function in a mouse model of acute liver failure. Furthermore, as found by many other groups, the administration of ADSCs improved liver tissue fibrosis in a mouse model of liver cirrhosis. A comprehensive protein expression analysis by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry showed that the various cytokines and chemokines produced by ADSCs promote the healing of liver disease. In this review, we examine the ability of expressed protein components of ADSCs to promote healing in cell therapy for liver disease. Previous studies demonstrated that ADSCs are a treatment cell source for patients with chronic liver injury. Nucleolar organizer regions are nucleolar components that contain proteins that are stained selectively by silver methods; they can be identified as black dots throughout the nucleolus and are known as silver binding nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR). The number of AgNOR is related to the cell cycle and the proliferative activity of the cells. We investigated AgNOR using exfoliative cytology smears of potentially malignant oral lesions. Eighty individuals were divided into four equal groups: healthy controls, oral leukoplakia, oral submucous fibrosis and oral squamous cell carcinoma. The mean number of AgNOR in each study group gradually increased from control to oral leukoplakia to oral submucous fibrosis to oral squamous cell carcinoma. The proliferative index was increased in the oral premalignant and malignant patients compared to normal subjects. The mean AgNOR size gradually increased from control to oral leukoplakia to oral submucous fibrosis to oral squamous cell carcinoma. Spherical shaped AgNOR were most common in controls, whereas large, clustered and kidney shapes were most common in oral squamous cell carcinoma. Multiparameter analysis of AgNOR in oral exfoliative smears is a simple, sensitive and cost-effective method for differentiating premalignant from malignant lesions and can be used in conjunction with routine cytomorphological evaluation. 相似文献

Human Nipah virus (NiV) infection, often fatal in Bangladesh, is primarily transmitted by drinking raw date palm sap contaminated by Pteropus bats. We assessed the impact of a behavior change communication intervention on reducing consumption of potentially NiV-contaminated raw sap. During the 2012–2014 sap harvesting seasons, we implemented interventions in two areas and compared results with a control area. In one area, we disseminated a “do not drink raw sap” message and, in the other area, encouraged only drinking sap if it had been protected from bat contamination by a barrier (“only safe sap”). Post-intervention, 40% more respondents in both intervention areas reported knowing about a disease contracted through raw sap consumption compared with control. Reported raw sap consumption decreased in all areas. The reductions in the intervention areas were not significantly greater compared to the control. Respondents directly exposed to the “only safe sap” message were more likely to report consuming raw sap from a protected source than those with no exposure (25 vs. 15%, OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.5–2.6, P < 0.001). While the intervention increased knowledge in both intervention areas, the “only safe sap” intervention reduced exposure to potentially NiV-contaminated sap and should be considered for future dissemination. 相似文献

Drought is the most common form of abiotic stress that reduces plant growth and productivity. It causes plant
injuries through elevated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Potassium (K) is a vital plant nutrient that
notably ameliorates the detrimental effect of drought stress in the plant. A pot experiment was conducted at the
Laboratory of Plant Stress Responses, Faculty of Agriculture, Kagawa University, Japan, under controlled environment of green house to explore the role of K in mitigating drought severity in wheat (Triticum asevitum L.)
seedlings. Three days after germination, seedlings were exposed to three water regimes viz., 100, 50, and 20% field
capacity (FC) for 21 days. Potassium was adjusted in Hoagland nutrient solution at 0, 6 and 12 mM concentration
and applied to pot instead of normal water. Results show that, water deficit stress notably reduced plant growth,
biomass accumulation, leaf relative water content (RWC) along with reduced photosynthetic pigments. Increased
amount of biochemical stress markers viz., malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), methylglyoxal
(MG), proline (Pro) as well as an impaired antioxidant defense system were observed in drought affected wheat
plants. On the contrary, K supplementation resulted in improvement of biochemical and physiological parameters
that worked behind in improving growth and development of the wheat plants. In addition, enzymes of ascorbateglutathione (AsA-GSH) cycle were also enhanced by supplemented K that accelerated the ROS detoxification process in plant. Although glyoxalse system did not performed well till MG was detoxified might following another
short stepped pathways. Our results revealed that drought stressed plants showed better performances in terms of
biochemical and physiological attributes, antioxidant defense and glyoxalase system, as well as ROS detoxification
