Supercapacitors have emerged as an important energy storage technology offering rapid power delivery, fast charging, and long cycle lifetimes. While extending the operational voltage is improving the overall energy and power densities, progress remains hindered by a lack of stable n‐type redox‐active materials. Here, a new Faradaic electrode material comprised of a narrow bandgap donor?acceptor conjugated polymer is demonstrated, which exhibits an open‐shell ground state, intrinsic electrical conductivity, and enhanced charge delocalization in the reduced state. These attributes afford very stable anodes with a coulombic efficiency of 99.6% and that retain 90% capacitance after 2000 charge–discharge cycles, exceeding other n‐dopable organic materials. Redox cycling processes are monitored in situ by optoelectronic measurements to separate chemical versus physical degradation mechanisms. Asymmetric supercapacitors fabricated using this polymer with p‐type PEDOT:PSS operate within a 3 V potential window, with a best‐in‐class energy density of 30.4 Wh kg?1 at a 1 A g?1 discharge rate, a power density of 14.4 kW kg?1 at a 10 A g?1 discharge rate, and a long cycle life critical to energy storage and management. This work demonstrates the application of a new class of stable and tunable redox‐active material for sustainable energy technologies.  相似文献

BackgroundThe diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB) in young children can be challenging, especially in severely malnourished children. There is a critical need for improved diagnostics for children. Thus, we sought to evaluate the performance of a technique that measures antibodies in lymphocyte supernatant (ALS) for the diagnosis of TB in severely malnourished children presenting with suspected pneumonia.MethodsChildren less than 5 years with severe acute malnutrition and radiological features of pneumonia admitted to the Dhaka Hospital of International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, were enrolled consecutively following informed written consent. In addition to clinical and radiological assessment, samples taken for TB diagnosis included gastric lavage fluid and induced sputum for microbiological confirmation. ALS was measured from venous blood, and results were evaluated in children classified as “confirmed”, “non-confirmed TB” or “not TB”.ResultsAmong 224 children who had ALS analysis, 12 (5.4%) children had microbiologically “confirmed TB”, a further 41 (18%) had clinically diagnosed “non-confirmed TB” and the remaining 168 (75%) were considered not to have TB. ALS was positive in 89 (40%) and negative in 85 (39%) of children, with a large number (47 or 21%) reported as “borderline”. These proportions were similar between the three diagnostic groups. The sensitivity and specificity of ALS when comparing “Confirmed TB” to “Not TB” was only 67% (95% CI: 31–91%) and 51% (95% CI: 42–60%), respectively.

Conclusions and Significance

Our data suggest that ALS is not sufficiently accurate to improve the diagnosis of TB in children with severe malnutrition.  相似文献

An aminopeptidase (EC 3.4.11.1) was purified from the extract of Lyophyllum cinerascens by ammonium sulfate fractionation and sequential chromatographies on DEAE-Sephadex, Sephadex G-150, HPLC-phenyl-5PW, and HPLC-DEAE-5PW columns, with an activity recovery of 4.6% using Leu-beta-naphthylamide as a substrate. The enzyme was a tetrameric protein of molecular weight 150,000 and was found to be rich in histidine. It exhibited a pH optimum of 7.2 and stability between pH 5.7 and 7.7. The isoelectric point of the enzyme was 4.6. The enzyme catalyzed the hydrolysis of amino acid beta-naphthylamides, Phe greater than Leu greater than Met greater than Tyr greater than Ala greater than Glu, and the differences of the measured kcat's ranged over 2-3 orders of magnitude while many of the amino acid beta-naphthylamides were not hydrolyzed at all. Other interesting comparisons include two aliphatics, Ala vs Leu, and the aromatics, Tyr vs Phe, which show a 30-fold difference in the kcat/Km values. The enzyme also hydrolyzed Leu-Gly-Gly and the B chain of oxidized insulin to release N-terminal leucine and phenylalanine, respectively. The release of N-terminal Phe from the oxidized B chain is interesting in view of the fact that the penultimate residue is Val, an unfavorable amino acid in the beta-naphthylamide series. The enzyme seems to be a true aminopeptidase, requiring the free amino groups and hydrolyzing dipeptide and oligopeptide from the N-terminal end. The enzyme was resistant to the action of amastatin. Neither sulfhydryl reagents nor serine protease inhibitors affected the enzyme activity; however, the enzyme was inhibited weakly by EDTA and bestatin and strongly by diethyl pyrocarbonate.  相似文献

Up-regulation of programmed death-1 (PD-1) identifies exhausted T cells in various mouse and human viral models including chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, which is characterized by impaired CTL function. A large proportion of patients fail to eradicate HCV with current IFN-based antiviral therapy; in particular, African Americans are less likely to respond, but the mechanisms for these differences are not fully elucidated. In this study, in 72 treatment-naive patients with persistent HCV we found that PD-1 was significantly up-regulated on CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells, HCV-specific CTLs, and NK cells. Increased PD-1 on HCV-specific CTLs was significantly associated with failed early and sustained virologic response to therapy in African American but not Caucasian American patients. Patients with sustained virologic response showed decreases in PD-1 on total CD4(+) T cells, HCV-specific CTLs, and the CD56(bright) NK subset after therapy completion. Collectively, these data indicate that PD-1 is critical in persistent HCV and successful therapy results in global down-regulation of its expression.  相似文献

The demand for vaccination against infectious diseases involves a choice between vaccinating and not vaccinating, in which there is a trade-off between the benefits and costs of each option. The aim of this paper is to investigate these trade-offs and to estimate how the perceived prevalence and severity of both the disease against which the vaccine is given and any vaccine associated adverse events (VAAE) might affect demand. A Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) was used to elicit stated preferences from a representative sample of 369 UK mothers of children below 5 years of age, for three hypothetical vaccines. Cost was included as an attribute, which enabled estimation of the willingness to pay for different vaccines having differing levels of the probability of occurrence and severity of both the infection and VAAE. The results suggest that the severity of the health effects associated with both the diseases and VAAEs exert an important influence on the demand for vaccination, whereas the probability of these events occurring was not a significant predictor. This has important implications for public health policy, which has tended to focus on the probability of these health effects as the main influence on decision making. Our results also suggest that anticipated regrets about the consequences of making the wrong decision also exert an influence on demand.  相似文献

It has long been assumed that prolonged holding of environmental samples at the ambient air temperature prior to bacteriological analysis is detrimental to isolation and detection of Vibrio cholerae, the causative agent of pandemic cholera. The present study was aimed at understanding the effect of transporting environmental samples at the ambient air temperature on isolation and enumeration of V. cholerae. For water and plankton samples held at ambient temperatures ranging from 31 degrees C to 35 degrees C for 20 h, the total counts did not increase significantly but the number of culturable V. cholerae increased significantly compared to samples processed within 1 h of collection, as measured by culture, acridine orange direct count, direct fluorescent-antibody-direct viable count (DFA-DVC), and multiplex PCR analyses. For total coliform counts, total bacterial counts, and DFA-DVC counts, the numbers did not increase significantly, but the culturable plate counts for V. cholerae increased significantly after samples were held at the ambient temperature during transport to the laboratory for analysis. An increase in the recovery of V. cholerae O1 and improved detection of V. cholerae O1 rfb and ctxA also occurred when samples were enriched after they were kept for 20 h at the ambient temperature during transport. Improved detection and isolation of toxigenic V. cholerae from freshwater ecosystems can be achieved by holding samples at the ambient temperature, an observation that has significant implications for tracking this pathogen in diverse aquatic environments.  相似文献

Since Vibrio cholerae O139 first appeared in 1992, both O1 El Tor and O139 have been recognized as the epidemic serogroups, although their geographic distribution, endemicity, and reservoir are not fully understood. To address this lack of information, a study of the epidemiology and ecology of V. cholerae O1 and O139 was carried out in two coastal areas, Bakerganj and Mathbaria, Bangladesh, where cholera occurs seasonally. The results of a biweekly clinical study (January 2004 to May 2005), employing culture methods, and of an ecological study (monthly in Bakerganj and biweekly in Mathbaria from March 2004 to May 2005), employing direct and enrichment culture, colony blot hybridization, and direct fluorescent-antibody methods, showed that cholera is endemic in both Bakerganj and Mathbaria and that V. cholerae O1, O139, and non-O1/non-O139 are autochthonous to the aquatic environment. Although V. cholerae O1 and O139 were isolated from both areas, most noteworthy was the isolation of V. cholerae O139 in March, July, and September 2004 in Mathbaria, where seasonal cholera was clinically linked only to V. cholerae O1. In Mathbaria, V. cholerae O139 emerged as the sole cause of a significant outbreak of cholera in March 2005. V. cholerae O1 reemerged clinically in April 2005 and established dominance over V. cholerae O139, continuing to cause cholera in Mathbaria. In conclusion, the epidemic potential and coastal aquatic reservoir for V. cholerae O139 have been demonstrated. Based on the results of this study, the coastal ecosystem of the Bay of Bengal is concluded to be a significant reservoir for the epidemic serogroups of V. cholerae.  相似文献

New 4f-4f chloranilate-bridged dinuclear LnIII complexes, [(HBpz3)2Ln(μ-C6Cl2O4)Ln(HBpz3)2] (Ln(CA)Ln: Ln=Eu, Tb, Yb), were synthesized and characterized by the X-ray analysis. Their structure and spectroscopic properties were compared with those of dinuclear 3d-4f assembled molecular systems [(acac)2CrIII(μ-ox)LnIII(HBpz3)2] (Cr(ox)Ln: acac=acetylacetonate, ox2−=oxalate, HBpz3 −=hydrotris(pyrazol-1-yl)borate) and [(acac)2Cr(μ-bpypz)Ln(hfac)3] (Cr(bpypz)Ln: bpypz=3,5-di(2-pyridyl)pyrazolate, hfac=hexafluoroacetylacetonate). The complex Yb(CA)Yb shows strong 4f-4f emission due to the ligand to metal energy transfer from the triplet state of the CA2− to the excited 4f state of YbIII. On the other hand, the observation of only the 4f-4f emission in the Cr(bpypz)Yb complex is in contrast to the simultaneous observation of the low temperature 3d-3d and 4f-4f emissions associated with the energy transfer from CrIII to YbIII in the Cr(ox)Yb complexes. This indicates that the energy transfer from CrIII to YbIII is faster in the Cr(bpypz)Yb as compared to that in the Cr(ox)Yb even at low temperatures leading to the stronger 4f-4f luminescence in the former complex. No observation of either TbIIIor EuIII emission in the Tb(CA)Tb or Eu(CA)Eu complexes suggests the energy transfer or back-transfer from the Tb or Eu ions to the CA2− moiety. Conversely, the Cr(bpypz)Eu and Cr(bpypz)Tb complexes show 3d-3d emissions as similarly to the corresponding Cr(ox)Eu and Cr(ox)Tb complexes; indicating the energy transfer from the Eu or Tb to the CrIII moiety.  相似文献
