Summary In a solution culture study the absorption of Ca in the shoot of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) and various root parameters viz fresh weight, dry weight, length and surface area were measured at weekly intervals. All the root parameters were significantly correlated (p=0.01) with the amount of Ca absorbed when the concentration of Ca was such (5 meq/l) that the absorption capacity of the root membrane was fully saturated. The use of this relationship has been suggested in estimating the amount of roots developed in the soil system where identical conditions exist with respect to Ca concentration. Such estimated values have been termed as equivalent root length or equivalent root surface area as the case may be. P and K flux into the roots growing in the soil system have been worked out from these estimates of root parameters.  相似文献

Carnitine content in the ejaculate depends mainly on the capability of the epididymis wall to transfer carnitine from the blood and on the patency of ejaculatory ductus systems. An elevation of carnitine in semen subsequent to an intravenous injection of carnitine is expected. Intravenous injections of carnitine (L-isomer and DL-isomers) caused a significant (P <0.05) elevation (more than 10-fold) in blood carnitine. However, carnitine injection failed to increase net secretion of carnitine into the ejaculate and blood elimination half-life was 2.3 hours. Mean concentrations of carnitine in the electroejaculate (3.0 nmoles/ml) were significantly lower than in the ejaculate following natural mating (180 nmoles/ml). Vasectomy decreased net carnitine per ejaculate to about 1/5 the prevasectomy value, when ejaculate was collected following natural mating. However, vasectomy did not affect carnitine concentrations in semen collected by electroejaculation. Twenty-one percent of the carnitine in semen originated in the accessory glands and 79% in the epididymides. Carnitine in the electroejaculate was originated almost exclusively in the accessory glands. It was concluded that the diagnostic value of carnitine in semen is limited. Some considerations are: secretion of carnitine is not organ specific, there are large individual variations, there is a negative effect of electroejaculation, and a carnitine loading dose technique is not feasible. However, there is a diagnostic potential in using carnitine assay to detect epididymides occlusion, but only when ejaculate is collected by an artificial vagina.  相似文献

Summary The fluctuations of ODR, moisture content in the crust and the soil beneath the crust and crust strength during emergence period have been presented. The limiting factors of the seed environment under crusted soil conditions have been described and identified. In the early part of the emergence period ODR and in the later part crust strength were the limiting factors. The emergence characteristics of the 12 soybean varieties of varying seed sizes were analysed in detail. The small seeded varieties (Type-1 and Type-49) were less susceptible to the effects of increasing crust strength and maintained distinct emergence advantage over the large seeded varieties. Since the large seeded varieties confronted the hard crust barriers for a longer period of time, their seedling mortality was more than 50 per cent as compared to around 30 per cent in case of small seeded ones.  相似文献

Streptomyces sannanensis MTCC 6637 was examined for its potentiality to transform ferulic acid into its corresponding hydroxybenzoate-derivatives. Cultures of S. sannanensis when grown on minimal medium containing ferulic acid as sole carbon source, vanillic acid accumulation was observed in the medium as the major biotransformed product along with transient formation of vanillin. A maximum amount of 400 mg/l vanillic acid accumulation was observed, when cultures were grown on 5 mM ferulic acid at 28°C. This accumulation of vanillic acid was found to be stable in the culture media for a long period of time, thus facilitating its recovery. Purification of vanillic acid was achieved by gel filtration chromatography using Sephadex™ LH-20 matrix. Catabolic route of ferulic acid biotransformation by S. sannanensis has also been demonstrated. The metabolic inhibitor experiment [by supplementation of 3,4 methylenedioxy-cinnamic acid (MDCA), a metabolic inhibitor of phenylpropanoid enzyme 4-hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA ligase (4-CL) along with ferulic acid] suggested that biotransformation of ferulic acid into vanillic acid mainly proceeds via CoA-dependent route. In vitro conversions of ferulic acid to vanillin, vanillic acid and vanillin to vanillic acid were also demonstrated with cell extract of S. sannanensis. Further degradation of vanillic acid to other intermediates such as, protocatechuic acid and guaiacol was not observed, which was also confirmed in vitro with cell extract.  相似文献

A number of fungal parasites infect a wide range of insects and cause epizootics from time to time. Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo) Vuillemin and Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschnikoff) Sorokin are two of the major disease-causing fungi in insects. Investigations were carried out to study the effect of these fungi on the toxicity of endosulfan, imidacloprid, lufenuron, diflubenzuron, dimethoate and oxydemeton methyl against 10-11 days old larvae of Spilarctia obliqua (Walker). For some products the combination treatments showed higher dose mortality response than the sole treatment of fungal conidia or the insecticide. The combination of insecticides with B. bassiana showed 1.26-35.8 fold increase in toxicity of insecticides over sole treatment, while the increase was 1.05-72.0 fold in case of M. anisopliae. Imidacloprid 17.8 SL and oxydemeton methyl 25EC may be used in combination with these fungi for management of S. obliqua.  相似文献

It is well-documented that pro-inflammatory cytokines and inflammation play a significant role in the expansion of cancer disease. Gallic acid (GA), a natural compound, and metformin (Met), a synthetic drug exhibit potent anticancer potential via the distinct molecular mechanism. However, whether both these compounds can act synergistically to preclude and treat cancer is still unknown. This prompted us to scrutinize, the synergism between GA and Met, and that of a new co-drug synthesizing of GA and Met (GA-Met) and investigated the chemo-protective effect against breast cancer with possible intervention of cytokines. In vivo studies were based on chemical carcinogenesis, challenging breast tissue by dimethylbenz[α]anthracene (DMBA). Tumour incidence, tumour burden, pro-inflammatory cytokines in serum, breast, hepatic tissue, macroscopically and histological analysis of mammary tumours were carried out and estimated. GA, Met and GA-Met co-drug exhibited the inhibition of cell proliferation; higher reduction of cell proliferation was observed by GA-Met. The inhibitory effect of GA-Met was linked to cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase, along with induction of apoptosis and accumulation in the sub-G1 phase. GA-Met significantly inhibited the cytokines production along with protection against DMBA-induced hyperplasia. Taken altogether, the current result suggests that GA-Met co-drug endows a safe and protective effect against cancer metastasis and can possibly use for the treatment of human breast cancer.  相似文献

Forty-five percent food restriction for 28 days in male rats caused a significant decrease in hexobarbital sleeping time which was inversely related to hepatic cytochrome P-450 content. These changes corroborated well with enhanced in vitro activity of hepatic microsomal aniline hydroxylase, p-chloromethylaniline-N-demethylase and p-nitrobenzoate reductase and concomitant increases in cytosolic G-6-P + 6-PG dehydrogenase and malic enzyme activities. Thus food restriction, unlike starvation, enhances drug metabolism and related enzymatic activity.  相似文献

Background  

Adaptive evolution appears to be a common feature of reproductive proteins across a very wide range of organisms. A promising way of addressing the evolutionary forces responsible for this general phenomenon is to test for adaptive evolution in the same gene but among groups of species, which differ in their reproductive biology. One can then test evolutionary hypotheses by asking whether the variation in adaptive evolution is consistent with the variation in reproductive biology. We have attempted to apply this approach to the study of a female reproductive protein, zona pellucida C (ZPC), which has been previously shown by the use of likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) to be under positive selection in mammals.  相似文献

During the past few years, the production of natural value-added compounds from microbial sources has gained tremendous importance. Due to an increase in consumer demand for natural products, various food and pharmaceutical industries are continuously in search of novel metabolites obtained from microbial biotransformation. The exploitation of microbial biosynthetic pathways is both feasible and cost effective in the production of natural compounds. The environmentally compatible nature of these products is one major reason for their increasing demand. Novel approaches for natural product biogeneration will take advantage of the current studies on biotechnology, biochemical pathways and microbiology. The interest of the scientific community has shifted toward the use of microbial bioconversion for the production of valuable compounds from natural substrates. The present review focuses on eugenol biotransformation by microorganisms resulting in the formation of various value-added products such as ferulic acid, coniferyl alcohol, vanillin and vanillic acid.  相似文献
