 In this paper we study a natural upper-arm movement composed of sequential phases of reaching, grasping, and retrieval in the horizontal plane; in the present context, natural means that the spatiotemporal constraints active in the execution of the movement are low. The proposed method of quantitative analysis, which is applied to data obtained from healthy subjects, combines quantification of arm kinematics and kinesiologic electromyography assessment of neuromuscular control for each subject; to this aim, we propose using factor analysis. Despite the existence of a time-profile invariance of velocity traces, the identified factors may differ in the muscles that load on them; the interpretation is that different neuromuscular synergies are involved in the execution of the movement, which leads to cluster the subjects into two distinct groups. Compared with group-2 subjects, group-1 subjects present a more lateral hand path direction and a less smooth hand trajectory in their approach to the grasped object. To explain the identified factors and the kinematic findings, it is hypothesized that the feedforward motor commands involved in trajectory planning are different. The effects of beauvericin, a toxic fungal metabolite common contaminant of maize and wheat, on aphid fitness were studied in three consecutive generations of females. Aphids were reared on wheat leaves inserted into a sandy substratum wetted with a solution of beauvericin. Ingestion of this solution through leaves did not significantly decrease the lifespan of females of all generations as compared to controls. However, the mean number of offspring from the third generation of treated females was significantly smaller than those in controls. Furthermore, treated second and third generation females produced a greater number of abortive embryos. Histological analysis revealed abundant DAPI and Feulgen positive material in the cytoplasm of some bacteriocytes of treated third generation females. This material was attributed to the endosymbionts of bacteriocytes. Tests by contact were also carried out and revealed a significantly lower survival of treated first instar aphids as compared to controls 18h after the start of the trial.  相似文献

mTOR/RAFT1/FRAP is the target of the immunosuppressive drug rapamycin and the central component of a nutrient- and hormone-sensitive signaling pathway that regulates cell growth. We report that mTOR forms a stoichiometric complex with raptor, an evolutionarily conserved protein with at least two roles in the mTOR pathway. Raptor has a positive role in nutrient-stimulated signaling to the downstream effector S6K1, maintenance of cell size, and mTOR protein expression. The association of raptor with mTOR also negatively regulates the mTOR kinase activity. Conditions that repress the pathway, such as nutrient deprivation and mitochondrial uncoupling, stabilize the mTOR-raptor association and inhibit mTOR kinase activity. We propose that raptor is a missing component of the mTOR pathway that through its association with mTOR regulates cell size in response to nutrient levels.  相似文献

An open-air experiment was performed in Pistoia (Italy) to investigate the possible protective role played by different contents of UV-B absorbing compounds to realistic UV-B supplementation and to study its effect on plant fruit production. A mutant line and its normal counterpart of Lycopersicon esculentum Mill, which differ in the content of UV-B absorbing compounds, were used. Additional UV-B radiation in the field was supplied to simulate a 20% stratospheric ozone depletion. Two groups of plants were grown: ‘control’, where plants received only natural solar UV-B radiation, and ‘UV-B’ treatment, where plants were grown under supplemental UV-B. The results of the experiment showed that the content of UV-B absorbing compounds of treated plants did not differ from that of the control in both lines. This indicates that natural sunlight, in Mediterranean areas, is saturating for synthesis of these compounds also in plants with normal content of UV-B absorbing compounds. Consequently, plants are not able to produce significant additional amounts of them, in response to a realistic UV-B supplementation, in order to protect the plant from additional UV-B radiation. No different responses to the UV-B supplementation were found between the two lines. The most significant UV-B effect was an earlier reddening of fruits in comparison with the ‘control’ accompanied by a reduction in the size of mature fruits. No significant effects of UV-B treatment were observed in biomass accumulation, leaf ontogeny, flowering or productivity.  相似文献

In spite of the economical relevance of polyploid crops, genetic mapping of these species has been relatively overlooked. This is because of intrinsic difficulties such as the uncertainty of the chromosome behavior at meiosis I and the need for very large segregating populations. An important, yet underestimated issue, in mapping polyploids is the choice of the molecular marker system. An ideal molecular marker system for polyploid mapping should maximize the percentage of single dose markers (SDMs) detected and the possibility of recognizing allelic markers. In the present work, the marker index for genetic mapping (MIgm) of M-AFLP is compared with that of AFLP and SAMPL. M-AFLPs have the highest MIgm values (22 vs. 18.5 of SAMPL and 9.83 of AFLP) mostly because of their high power to detect polymorphism. Owing to their prevalent codominant inheritance, it is proposed that M-AFLP can be used for the preliminary identification of hom(e)ologous groups.  相似文献

Monitoring vegetation trends against objective baselines is fundamental to quantify the impacts of global change on plant biodiversity. Vegetation plot time series are a gold standard in vegetation monitoring, but such data are missing for many regions. Southern Patagonia is an example of a region strongly impacted by climate change but lacking time series data. Monitoring in this region could benefit from a comparison with vegetation survey data gathered between 1975 and 1979, as part of the multidisciplinary research program “Transecta botánica de la Patagonia austral” (hereafter Transecta). Published in 1985, it contains data on 668 vegetation plots, which were so far inaccessible to most researchers: Transecta has never been reprinted, nor fully digitized, and can only be found in specialized libraries. Here, we created a reproducible workflow, documenting how vegetation plot data from historical sources can be extracted and harmonized. The resulting open-access database we created fills a major regional gap and provides a needed baseline to assess the impacts of global change on southern Patagonia vegetation. By making these data available, we hope to inspire a new generation of vegetation scientists to resurvey the area and continue the legacy of the pioneer researchers who compiled Transecta.  相似文献

Egg production, growth and development rates of Oithona similiswere measured in the laboratory as a function of food concentrationand composition. On an optimum diet, development is isochronaland growth is near exponential. The maximum juvenile growthrate at 15C (0.2 day–1) is similar to juvenile growthin calanoid copepods. The maximum weight-specific egg productionrate (0.1 day–1), on the other hand, is substantiallyless than in free-spawning calanoids, but similar to that inegg-carrying calanoids. In the Kattegat, Oithona spp. egg productionis strongly limited by food during summer and controlled bytemperature during winter. Summary Antibodies raised against D. melanogaster ribosomal proteins were used to examine possible structural relationships between eukaryotic and prokaryotic ribosomal proteins. The antisera were raised against either groups of ribosomal proteins or purified individual ribosomal proteins from D. melanogaster. The specificity of each antiserum was confirmed and the identity of the homologous E. coli ribosomal protein was determined by immunochemical methods. Immuno-overlay assays indicated that the antiserum against the D. melanogaster small subunit protein S14 (anti-S14) was highly specific for protein S14. In addition, anti-S14 showed a cross-reaction with total E. coli ribosomal proteins in Ouchterlony double immunodiffusion assays and with only E. coli protein S6 in immuno-overlay assays. From these and other experiments with adsorption of anti-S14 with individual purified proteins, the E. coli protein homologous to the D. melanogaster protein S14 was established as protein S6.  相似文献
