Fatty acid profiles of purified elementary bodies of Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) serotypes D, G and L3 were investigated by gas liquid chromatography (GLC) utilizing three fused silica capillary columns of different polarities. CT serotype C and C. psittaci (CP) strain DD34 were investigated using one column only due to the lack of adequate quantities of purified material. Significantly similar fatty acid profiles were observed in the serotypes examined. However, based on the percentage ratio of 13-methyl tetradecanoate (i-15:0) to 12-methyl tetradecanoate (a-15:0), serotypes D and L3, with ratios of 0.18 and 0.19, respectively, could be differentiated from serotypes C and G with ratios of 1.3 and 1.5, respectively. CP demonstrated a ratio of 0.4, thus differentiating it from the CT serotypes examined. Fatty acids i-15:0 and a-15:0 were absent in uninfected McCoy cells. Results were significantly comparable in all three capillary columns. Malaria is one of the strongest selective pressures in recent human evolution. African populations have been and continue to be at risk for malarial infections. However, few studies have re-sequenced malaria susceptibility loci across geographically and genetically diverse groups in Africa. We examined nucleotide diversity at Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), a malaria susceptibility candidate locus, in a number of human populations with a specific focus on diverse African ethnic groups. We used tests of neutrality to assess whether natural selection has impacted this locus and tested whether SNP variation at ICAM-1 is correlated with malaria endemicity. We observe differing patterns of nucleotide and haplotype variation in global populations and higher levels of diversity in Africa. Although we do not observe a deviation from neutrality based on the allele frequency distribution, we do observe several alleles at ICAM-1, including the ICAM-1 Kilifi allele, that are correlated with malaria endemicity. We show that the ICAM-1 Kilifi allele, which is common in Africa and Asia, exists on distinct haplotype backgrounds and is likely to have arisen more recently in Asia. Our results suggest that correlation analyses of allele frequencies and malaria endemicity may be useful for identifying candidate functional variants that play a role in malaria resistance and susceptibility. 相似文献

Cognitive deficits have been observed in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) due to hippocampal insults. Antioxidant vitamins
D and E are suggested for patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases like MS, while their mechanisms of action are
not well understood. Here, we have tried to study the effects of these vitamins on demyelination, cell death, and remyelination
of rat hippocampus following local ethidium bromide (EB) injection. Animals received 100 mg/kg vitamin E or 5 μg/kg of vitamin
D3 for 2, 7, or 28 days. The extent of demyelination, myelin staining intensity, and expression of myelin basic protein and
caspase-3 were investigated using histological and immunoblotting verification. Administration of EB alone caused demyelination,
cell death, and afterward an endogenous repair. Vitamins E and D3 reduced the EB-induced damage and increased the endogenous
remyelination of hippocampus. Although the anti-apoptotic effect of these vitamins and protection against demyelination were
predictable based on their antioxidant effect, our results indicated the positive effect of vitamins E and D3 on process of
remyelination by endogenous progenitor cells and supported their possible therapeutic effects in the context of demyelinating

Melatonin was found in the fresh water characeae Chara australis. The concentrations (~4 μg/g of tissue) were similar in photosynthesizing cells, independent of their position on the plant and rhizoids (roots) without chloroplasts. Exogenous melatonin, added at 10 μM to the artificial pond water, increased quantum yield of photochemistry of photosystem II by 34%. The increased efficiency appears to be due to the amount of open reaction centers of photosystem II, rather than increased efficiency of each reaction center. More open reaction centers reflect better functionality of all photosynthetic transport chain constituents. We suggest that melatonin protection against reactive oxygen species covers not only chlorophyll, but also photosynthetic proteins in general. 相似文献
