Six monoterpenes, ((?)-citronellal, p-cymene, (?)-menthone, α-pinene, α-terpinene and (?)-terpinen-4-ol) and two phenylpropenes, (trans-cinnamaldehyde and eugenol) were tested for their insecticidal activity against the rice weevil, Sitophilus oryzae under laboratory conditions. The bioassays were carried out on wheat at the concentrations of 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0?g/kg. Adult mortality was assessed after 14?days of exposure. After this interval, the treated wheat was retained for an additional period of 90?days, in order to evaluate progeny production and wheat loss. At the concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0?g/kg, trans-cinnamaldehyde and eugenol achieved highest adult mortality. At 5.0?g/kg, all compounds except for p-cymene and α-pinene caused complete (100%) adult mortality. Generally, trans-cinnamaldehyde was the most potent compound causing complete inhibition of progeny at the three concentrations. Similarly, no progeny were observed in the wheat treated with (?)-citronellal, eugenol, p-cymene, (?)-menthone, and (?)-terpinen-4-ol at 5.0?g/kg after 45 and 90?days. Similar trends were noted for wheat weight loss and damage as the treatment with monoterpenes and phenylpropenes at the highest rate preserved the wheat intact and free from damage by S. oryzae for 90?days. Our findings suggest the tested compounds except p-cymene and α-pinene could be recommended for use as part of an integrated pest management program for S. oryzae control in stored wheat.  相似文献

The objectives of this research were to identify certain chemical compounds that may be used as fingerprints of Saudi honey and to evaluate their antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Eleven Saudi ‘monofloral’ honey samples were analyzed and evaluated. Non-phenolic compounds, such as 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one, methyl 3-hydroxyhexanaote and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furancarboxaldehyde were present in different types of tested honey samples. Glyceraldehyde was only detected in five of the honey samples tested. The most promising result was the detection of an alkaloid (by using GC–MS) in only two types of Saudi honey samples. This alkaloid may be of great importance and has the potential to be used as a fingerprint marker for the botanical sources of the various honey samples tested. This alkaloid was present in Toran and Saha. The detected compound is 2-amino-4-hydroxypteridine-6-carboxylic acid, which may originate from the degradation of folic acid as identified by previous studies. These findings can be used as a gateway to obtain a fingerprint for these two types of honey samples and can potentially be used to track any impurities in honey sold on the market. All of the tested honey samples showed antioxidant and antibacterial activities. The highly effective activity was in Toran honey against Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Shafalah honey was effective against MRSA and Acinetobacter baumannii which showed bactericidal effects at concentrations 70–100%. This study also examined the antioxidant activity of honey samples using the DPPH assay. DPPH values of tested honey samples varied between 53.93?±?0.21%, as the highest value and 5.89?±?0.125%, as the lowest value. Significant correlations between the antibacterial and the antioxidant activities of the tested honey samples were noticed. The corresponding total phenolic contents (TPC) values supported the fact that phenolic compounds enhanced the antibacterial activity. The study revealed that some of the locally produced honey samples, specifically Zaitoon, Shaflah, Saha, Rabea Aja and Bareq contained the monosaccharides called glyceraldehydes which was the precursor to produce methylglyoxal (MGO) compound, which has antibacterial effects as documented in several previous studies. There was no clear relationship between these activities and the sum total of phenolic compounds present in Saudi honey.  相似文献

The probiotic effects of seven newly isolated gut bacteria, from the indegenous honey bees of Saudi Arabia were investigated. In vivo bioassays were used to investigate the effects of each gut bacterium namely, Fructobacillus fructosus (T1), Proteus mirabilis (T2), Bacillus licheniformis (T3), Lactobacillus kunkeei (T4), Bacillus subtilis (T5), Enterobacter kobei (T6), and Morganella morganii (T7) on mortality percentage of honey bee larvae infected with P. larvae spores along with negative control (normal diet) and positive control (normal diet spiked with P. larvae spores). Addition of gut bacteria to the normal diet significantly reduced the mortality percentage of the treated groups. Mortality percentage in all treated groups ranged from 56.67% up to 86.67%. T6 treated group exhibited the highest mortality (86.67%), whereas T4 group showed the lowest mortality (56.67%). Among the seven gut bacterial treatments, T4 and T3 decreased the mortality 56.67% and 66.67%, respectively, whereas, for T2, T6, and T7 the mortality percentage was equal to that of the positive control (86.67%). Mortality percentages in infected larval groups treated with T1, and T5 were 78.33% and 73.33% respectively. Most of the mortality occurred in the treated larvae during days 2 and 3. Treatments T3 and T4 treatments showed positive effects and reduced mortality.  相似文献

Complaints of stress are common in modern life. Psychological stress is a major cause of lifestyle-related issues, contributing to poor quality of life. Chronic stress impedes brain function, causing impairment of many executive functions, including working memory, decision making and attentional control. The current study sought to describe newly developed stress mitigation techniques, and their influence on autonomic and endocrine functions. The literature search revealed that the most frequently studied technique for stress mitigation was biofeedback (BFB). However, evidence suggests that neurofeedback (NFB) and noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) could potentially provide appropriate approaches. We found that recent studies of BFB methods have typically used measures of heart rate variability, respiration and skin conductance. In contrast, studies of NFB methods have typically utilized neurocomputation techniques employing electroencephalography, functional magnetic resonance imaging and near infrared spectroscopy. NIBS studies have typically utilized transcranial direct current stimulation methods. Mitigation of stress is a challenging but important research target for improving quality of life.  相似文献

In the present study, six monoterpenes [(?)-citronellal, p-cymene, (?)-menthone, α-pinene, α-terpinene, and (?)-terpinen-4-ol] and two phenylpropenes [trans-cinnamaldehyde and eugenol] were evaluated for their contact and fumigant toxicities against Sitophilus oryzae adults. The effects of these compounds on the mortality of S. oryzae adults in stored wheat and their inhibitory effects on acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and adenosine triphosphatases (ATPases) were examined. The tested compounds showed varying degrees of contact toxicity, with trans-cinnamaldehyde (LC50 = 0.01 mg/cm2) being the most potent compound, followed by (?)-menthone (LC50 = 0.013 mg/cm2) and eugenol (LC50 = 0.015 mg/cm2). In a fumigant toxicity assay, the monoterpenes α-terpinene, p-cymene, and (?)-menthone showed the highest toxicities (LC50 = 50.79, 52.37, and 54.08 μl/L air, respectively). Trans-cinnamaldehyde, (?)-citronellal, and eugenol were the least toxic (LC50 > 100 μl/L air). In general, the oxygenated compounds exhibited high contact toxicities while the hydrocarbon compounds exhibited high fumigant toxicities. When tested for their insecticidal activities against S. oryzae in stored wheat, trans-cinnamaldehyde was found to be the most potent compound, with 73.9% mortality at an application rate of 0.5 g/kg and complete mortality (100%) at 1 and 5 g/kg after 1 week of treatment. All of the tested compounds showed AChE inhibition, although (?)-citronellal and trans-cinnamaldehyde presented the strongest enzyme inhibition, with IC50 values of 18.40 and 18.93 mM, respectively. On the other hand, (?)-terpinene-4-ol exhibited the highest inhibition of ATPases, followed by α-pinene and α-terpinene.  相似文献

The production of hydrophilic mucilage along the course of seed coat epidermal cell differentiation is a common adaptation in angiosperms. Previous studies have identified COBRA‐LIKE 2 (COBL2), a member of the COBRA‐LIKE gene family, as a novel component required for crystalline cellulose deposition in seed coat epidermal cells. In recent years, Arabidopsis seed coat epidermal cells (SCEs), also called mucilage secretory cells, have emerged as a powerful model system for the study of plant cell wall components biosynthesis, secretion, assembly and de muro modification. Despite accumulating data, the molecular mechanism of COBL function remains largely unknown. In the current research, we utilized genetic interactions to study the role of COBL2 as part of the protein network required for seed mucilage production. Using correlative phenotyping of structural and biochemical characteristics, unique features of the cobl2 extruded mucilage are revealed, including: ‘unraveled’ ray morphology, loss of primary cell wall ‘pyramidal’ organization, reduced Ruthenium red staining intensity of the adherent mucilage layer, and increased levels of the monosaccharides arabinose and galactose. Examination of the cobl2cesa5 double mutant provides insight into the interface between COBL function and cellulose deposition. Additionally, genetic interactions between cobl2 and fei1fei2 as well as between each of these mutants to mucilage‐modified 2 (mum2) suggest that COBL2 functions independently of the FEI‐SOS pathway. Altogether, the presented data place COBL2 within the complex protein network required for cell wall deposition in the context of seed mucilage and introduce new methodology expending the seed mucilage phenotyping toolbox.  相似文献

We present a new method for predicting protein–ligand-binding sites based on protein three-dimensional structure and amino acid conservation. This method involves calculation of the van der Waals interaction energy between a protein and many probes placed on the protein surface and subsequent clustering of the probes with low interaction energies to identify the most energetically favorable locus. In addition, it uses amino acid conservation among homologous proteins. Ligand-binding sites were predicted by combining the interaction energy and the amino acid conservation score. The performance of our prediction method was evaluated using a non-redundant dataset of 348 ligand-bound and ligand-unbound protein structure pairs, constructed by filtering entries in a ligand-binding site structure database, LigASite. Ligand-bound structure prediction (bound prediction) indicated that 74.0 % of predicted ligand-binding sites overlapped with real ligand-binding sites by over 25 % of their volume. Ligand-unbound structure prediction (unbound prediction) indicated that 73.9 % of predicted ligand-binding residues overlapped with real ligand-binding residues. The amino acid conservation score improved the average prediction accuracy by 17.0 and 17.6 points for the bound and unbound predictions, respectively. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the combined use of the interaction energy and amino acid conservation in the ligand-binding site prediction.  相似文献

Background:Lifetime risk is a relatively straightforward measure used to communicate disease burden, representing the cumulative risk of an outcome during the remainder of an individual’s life starting from a disease-free index age. We estimated the lifetime risk of diabetes among men and women in both First Nations and non–First Nations populations using a cohort of adults in a single Canadian province. Methods:We used a population-based cohort consisting of Alberta residents from 1997 to 2008 who were free of diabetes at cohort entry to estimate the lifetime risk of diabetes among First Nations and non–First Nations people. We calculated age-specific incidence rates with the person-year method in 5-year bands. We estimated the sex- and index-age–specific lifetime risk of incident diabetes, after adjusting for the competing risk of death. Results:The cohort included 70 631 First Nations and 2 732 214 non–First Nations people aged 18 years or older. The lifetime risk of diabetes at 20 years of age was 75.6% among men and 87.3% among women in the First Nations group, as compared with 55.6% among men and 46.5% among women in the non–First Nations group. The risk was higher among First Nations people than among non–First Nations people for all index ages and for both sexes. Among non–First Nations people, men had a higher lifetime risk of diabetes than women across all index ages. In contrast, among First Nations people, women had a higher lifetime risk than men across all index ages.Interpretation:About 8 in 10 First Nations people and about 5 in 10 non–First Nations people of young age will develop diabetes in their remaining lifetime. These population-based estimates may help health care planners and decision-makers set priorities and increase public awareness and interest in the prevention of diabetes.Diabetes mellitus is a major health problem worldwide and is associated with increased morbidity, mortality, life expectancy and health care costs.14 The prevalence of diabetes in Canada has increased more than twofold over the past decade.5 Currently, the disease affects almost 2.4 million Canadians,6 and its management, along with that of associated complications, costs more than $9 billion annually.7 The burden of diabetes is particularly high among First Nations people in Canada, with prevalence rates 3–5 times higher than those among non–First Nations people.8Reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes will require a broad set of population-based and individual-level interventions that target diabetogenic aspects of lifestyle, as well as social determinants of health. The changes required to achieve these objectives will need buy-in from a wide range of stakeholders. Thus, it will be important to communicate risk in a way that is understood by the general population and by health authorities.Although estimates of incidence and prevalence provide important information about the burden of a disease in the community, they do not provide adequate information regarding the perspective of risk at the individual level. Lifetime risk (the probability of a disease-free individual developing the disease during his or her remaining lifespan) may be more informative for the general population and for decision-makers. Life-table modelling techniques use incidence and mortality data to estimate the lifetime risk of diabetes. This important assessment of the disease burden of diabetes has been undertaken in a few studies,911 but it has not been done in Canada. The need for such estimates is particularly relevant given the higher prevalence of diabetes among First Nations people in Canada. We estimated the lifetime risk of diabetes among men and women in both First Nations and non–First Nations populations using a cohort of adults residing in a single Canadian province.  相似文献
