Abstract: Key aspects of the morphology, autecology, systematics and taphonomy of the crustacean syncarids from the Montceau Lagerstätte (Upper Carboniferous, Stephanian B; France) are presented. Palaeocaris secretanae is the most abundant faunal element of the Montceau biota and shows striking morphological similarities with Palaeocaris typus from the Mazon Creek Lagerstätte (Westphalian D; Illinois, USA). Palaeocaris secretanae was a shrimp‐like animal with a short head (no head shield), large mandibles, 14 trunk segments (the first one being reduced) and a fan‐like caudal termination. Both the body and the appendage design indicate abilities for crawling on the substratum (slender endopods) and for escape reaction (uropodal fan, pleonal flexibility), although swimming activities may have been reduced (trunk appendages with small flap‐like exopods). Details of the appendages involved in feeding, e.g. mandibles and maxillipeds, indicate poor ability for predation but point to an omnivorous detritus feeding mode. Poorly developed respiratory organs (small cylindrical epipods) suggest a relatively low level of locomotory activity. The field of vision may have been large and panoramic (stalked eyes). Rows of pores on 12 trunk segments are interpreted as possible sensory organs used for current detection. Females were brooding eggs (clusters of eggs preserved along anteroventral trunk). Microprobe analysis indicates that siderite is the major component of the nodules. Four events played a key‐role in the three‐dimensional preservation of syncarids: (1) rapid burial, (2) minimal decomposition, (3) phosphatic mineralization shortly after the animal's death and (4) nodule formation around the carcass. Palaeocaris secretanae is morphologically close to Recent syncarids such Anaspides tasmaniae (freshwater streams, Australia) in its general body plan and detailed anatomy, e.g. mouth parts, indicating morphological stasis in syncarids over more than 200 million years. 相似文献

Abstract: We tested whether colony-site availability could allow for an increase in the unusually small breeding populations of yelkouan shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan) on the islands of the Port-Cros National Park (France) if feral cat eradication were undertaken. Comparisons between colony and noncolony sites indicated yelkouan shearwaters preferred deep-soiled and low-outcrop-covered coastal sites. A substrate cover, light avoidance, and sea proximity model suggested that 17.5% of unoccupied sites are suitable for colony establishment. The low proportion of suitable sites currently used by yelkouan shearwaters suggests that these colonies could be refuges and that feral cat eradication will probably lead to a breeding population increase. 相似文献

Both the conversion of natural habitats to farmland and efforts at increasing the yield of existing crops contribute to a decline in biodiversity. As a consequence of land conversion, specialised species are restricted to remnants of original habitat patches, which are frequently isolated. This may lead to a genetic differentiation of the subpopulations. We used seven microsatellite markers to examine the genetic population structure of the grass snake, Natrix natrix (Linnaeus, 1758), sampled in remnants of pristine habitat embedded in an intensively used agricultural landscape in north‐western Switzerland. The study area, a former wetland, has been drained and gradually converted into an agricultural plain in the last century, reducing the pristine habitat to approximately 1% of the entire area. The grass snake feeds almost entirely on amphibians, and is therefore associated with wetlands. In Central Europe, the species shows severe decline, most probably as a result of wetland drainage and decrease of amphibian populations. We found no genetically distinct grass snake populations in the study area covering 90 km2. This implies that there is an exchange of individuals between small remnants of original habitat. Thus, gene flow may prevent any genetic differentiation of subpopulations distributed over a relatively large area. Our results show that a specialized snake species can persist in an intensively used agricultural landscape, provided that suitable habitat patches are interconnected. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 51–58. 相似文献

Species traits in relation to temporal and spatial heterogeneity in streams: a test of habitat templet theory 总被引:8,自引:1,他引:8
1. The habitat templet approach depends on defining templet axes appropriate to the organism(s) of interest, predicting the traits of species associated with different parts of the templet, and testing these predictions in a range of habitats whose positions in the templet have been determined. 2. In this study of thirty-five benthic insect taxa at fifty-four tributary sites of the Taieri River on the South Island of New Zealand, we chose as the temporal axis the intensity/frequency of disturbance, defined in terms of bed movement during high discharge events. As the spatial axis, we postulated that three features would provide refugia and therefore ameliorate disturbance—percentage of the bed with low shear stress, percentage of the bed made up of large substratum particles and availability of interstitial space in the bed—from which we derived a combined multivariate refugium axis. 3. More disturbed communities contained a significantly higher percentage of individuals possessing the following traits: small size, high adult mobility, habitat generalist (each predicted to confer resilience in response to disturbance), clinger, streamlined/flattened and with two or more life stages outside the stream (each predicted to confer resistance in the face of disturbance). When analyses were performed on the percentage of taxa having particular traits, the predicted positive relationships with average bed movement were found for high adult mobility and habitat generalist traits. 4. The percentage of variance in trait scores explained by intensity of disturbance was generally higher in sites with less refugia available and lower in sites further from the headwaters. The percentage of variance explained was higher in sites recently subject to a major high discharge disturbance, suggesting that disturbances tend to strengthen the pattern of preponderance of resilience/resistance traits. 5. We mapped insect taxa onto the two-dimensional templet, following Grime et al.’s triangular terrestrial plant classification. The full variety of resistance and resilience traits were represented in insect species throughout the templet, but taxa associated with more disturbed conditions generally displayed a larger number of resilience and resistance traits, combined, than taxa associated with more stable stream beds. 相似文献

- 1 Ostracods occurring at two sections of the Upper Rhône River, France, were examined to determine relationships among species traits, habitat utilization, the relationship between species traits and habitat utilization, and trends in species traits and species richness in the context of spatial and temporal variability of habitats. Twenty regularly sampled species were used in this study and fifteen species traits were considered.
- 2 Throe groups can be distinguished according to their species traits: group 1 has species of mixed sizes with high reproductive rates, short life span, spherical shape, long swimming bristles, low thigmotactism, and high resistance to desiccation; group 2 has medium-sized species with low reproductive rates, long life span, low or no tolerance to desiccation, geometric (trapezoidal, triangular) or streamlined carapace shape, no swimming bristles, and a strong thigmotactism; group 3 has the largest species with parthenogenetic reproduction, medium-sized swimming bristles, and flattened or cylindric carapace shape.
- 3 Ostracod habitat utilization segregates the superficial and interstitial habitats along a gradient from the main channel to the abandoned arms and to the temporary waters.
- 4 The co-structure (= relationship) between species traits and habitat utilization indicates that the species use particular habitats with a particular set of species trait modalities. Species with long life spans, late maturity, low fecundity, and low migratory ability are restricted to the interstitial habitats; the epigean species with long life spans, large size, and parental care are more abundant in permanent flowing and standing surface waters; the epigean species with short life spans, high migratory ability, and high tolerance to desiccation are more abundant in temporary ponds.
- 5 The analyses of the distribution of the species traits in a river habitat templet of spatial and temporal variability emphasized that the main disturbance structuring the Rhône River ostracod assemblage is desiccation.
- 6 Of the trends predicted for species traits in the framework of the river habitat templet, five (size, body form, attachment, reproductive technique, and mobility) are clearly opposite for ostracods (because the predictions were mainly established for flood-related disturbances) but four (life span, number of reproductive cycles per year, age at first reproduction, and desiccation tolerance) are in agreement.
- 7 No trends in ostracod species richness in the framework of spatial–temporal habitat variability were evident.

A fuzzy coding approach for the analysis of long-term ecological data 总被引:15,自引:1,他引:14
- 1 We present an unconventional procedure (fuzzy coding) to structure biological and environmental information, which uses positive scores to describe the affinity of a species for different modalities (i.e. categories) of a given variable. Fuzzy coding is essential for the synthesis of long-term ecological data because it enables analysis of diverse kinds of biological information derived from a variety of sources (e.g. samples, literature).
- 2 A fuzzy coded table can be processed by correspondence analysis. An example using aquatic beetles illustrates the properties of such a fuzzy correspondence analysis. Fuzzy coded tables were used in all articles of this issue to examine relationships between spatial-temporal habitat variability and species traits, which were obtained from a long-term study of the Upper Rhône River, France.
- 3 Fuzzy correspondence analysis can be programmed with the equations given in this paper or can be performed using ADE (Environmental Data Analysis) software that has been adapted to analyse such long-term ecological data. On Macintosh AppleTM computers, ADE performs simple linear ordination, more recently developed methods (e.g. principal component analysis with respect to instrumental variables, canonical correspondence analysis, co-inertia analysis, local and spatial analyses), and provides a graphical display of results of these and other types of analysis (e.g. biplot, mapping, modelling curves).
- 4 ADE consists of a program library that exploits the potential of the HyperCardTM interface. ADE in an open system, which offers the user a variety of facilities to create a specific sequence of programs. The mathematical background of ADE is supported by the algebraic model known as ‘duality diagram’.

Streams in mediterranean regions have highly seasonal discharge patterns, with predictable torrential floods and severe droughts. In contrast, discharge is less variable in temperate regions and intermittent flow conditions are uncommon. Hydroclimatic models predict that climate change would increase frequency and severity of floods and droughts across Europe, thus increasing the proportion of streams with mediterranean characteristics in actually temperate areas. Correspondingly, understanding actual ecological differences between mediterranean and temperate streams may help to anticipate large‐scale ecological impacts of climate change. Given that large‐scale factors determine local community composition, we hypothesized that climatic differences between mediterranean and temperate regions should affect the taxonomic and biological trait composition in streams. We assembled the abundance of stream macroinvertebrate genera of 265 sites each from the Mediterranean Basin and from temperate Europe and linked these abundances to published information on 61 categories of 11 biological traits reflecting the potential of resilience from and resistance to disturbances. Although regional taxonomic richness was higher in the mediterranean than in the temperate region, local taxonomic richness and diversity did not significantly differ between regions. Local trait richness and diversity were significantly higher in the mediterranean region. Both local taxonomic and trait‐community composition differed between regions, but the former varied much more than the latter, highlighting that climate change could produce large changes in the taxonomic but rather weak changes in the trait composition. The mediterranean region was characterized by macroinvertebrates with higher dispersion and colonization capabilities, suggesting that species loss in the temperate region, by extinction or northward emigration of taxa, would be compensated for by immigration of southern mediterranean taxa. Thus, climate change would likely have stronger implications for the local conservation of taxa than for the trait composition of stream macroinvertebrate communities. 相似文献

Resistance to water‐stress induced cavitation is an important indicator of drought tolerance in woody species and is known to be intimately linked to the anatomy of the xylem. However, the actual mechanical properties of the pit membrane are not well known and the exact mode of air‐seeding by which cavitation occurs is still uncertain. We examined the relationship between cavitation resistance and bordered pit structure and function in 40 coniferous species. Xylem pressure inducing 50% loss of hydraulic conductance (P50, a proxy for cavitation resistance) varied widely among species, from ?2.9 to ?11.3 MPa. The valve effect of the pit membrane, measured as a function of margo flexibility and torus overlap, explained more variation in cavitation‐resistance than simple anatomical traits such as pit membrane, pit aperture or torus size. Highly cavitation resistant species exhibited both a high flexibility of the margo and a large overlap between the torus and the pit aperture, allowing the torus to tightly seal the pit aperture. Our results support the hypothesis of seal capillary‐seeding as the most likely mode of air‐seeding, and suggest that the adhesion of the torus to the pit border may be the main determinant of cavitation resistance in conifers. 相似文献

In order to study the effects of inorganic phosphate (P1) starvationon C4plants, 3-week-old maize plants (Zea maysL cv. Brulouis)were grown in a growth chamber on a nutrient solution withoutP1 over 22 d During the first 2 weeks, Pi-starved plants grewas well as control plants The Pi concentration in the planttissue decreased rapidly with time, which suggests that normalbiomass production can be maintained at the expense of internalP1 In addition, photosynthetic CO2 assimilation measured 4-6h after dawn was not affected, but the concentration of glucose, sucrose, and starch in leaves was much higher than in the controls14CO2 pulse-chase experiments earned out on the ninth day oftreatment showed that 14CO2 assimilation was perturbed duringthis initial period, resulting in a larger flow of carbon toboth starch and sucrose At the beginning of the third week ofP1 starvation (15 d after treatment) 14C incorporation intosucrose stayed high relative to controls but this was not thecase for starch At the end of the third week of P1-deficiency,shoot growth was considerably reduced and fresh weight was onlyone-third of that of the control plants. The P1 concentrationof both the leaf and root tissues was less than 1.0 µmolg1 FW compared to 20-25µmol g1 FW in the controls.Photosynthetic CO2 assimilation was reduced and the leaf concentrationof sucrose and starch, which had begun to decrease after theend of the second week of P1 limitation, became lower than inthe controls. These results obtained on maize plants show thatphotosynthesis and carbon partitioning between sucrose and starchwere strongly affected by P1 deficiency, similar to C3 species. Key words: CO2 assimilation, corn, orthophosphate deficiency, starch, sucrose 相似文献

1. Large‐scale comparative studies of ecological responses to anthropological stressors in rivers require measures that are consistent across a range of spatial scales. The biological trait profile of communities offers an alternative approach to traditional measures of macroinvertebrate taxonomic identity and is less constrained by biogeographic influences. 2. We compared the capacities of taxonomic composition and biological trait composition to discriminate the effects of land use (measured as percentage of the catchment in pasture) across a large geographic zone (the whole of New Zealand) in 30 sub‐catchments grouped into five ecoregions throughout the North and South Islands of New Zealand. In addition, we investigated trait consistency (i.e. whether similar traits had similar trait responses to land use at local (catchment) and broad scales). 3. The analysis of taxonomic composition showed that community structure was indeed influenced by land‐use intensity, but that relationships differed among ecoregions. In contrast, traditional assessment metrics (Macroinvertebrate Community Index, richness in Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera taxa) and trait composition were uninfluenced by region. Trait responses were consistent at the broad and catchment scales, with similar traits responding to pastoral land use at both scales. 4. We used general linear modelling to investigate individual trait responses to land‐use intensity, catchment area and region, focussing on 15 trait categories known to be influenced by land‐use intensity at the catchment scale. Several trait categories varied with land‐use intensity and demonstrated consistency at both catchment and broad scales. Of these, the representation of shorter generation time, asexual reproduction and hermaphroditism, ability to lay eggs beneath the water surface, egg protection and respiration types tolerant of oxygen depletion generally increased in assemblages exposed to more intense pastoral land use. At the same time, the representation of short life duration of adults, prevalence of laying eggs at the water surface, sexual reproduction and low body flexibility decreased in assemblages exposed to land‐use intensification. 5. Our results highlight the value of developing predictive response measures that are relevant at multiple scales and provide the basis for new measures of river condition that are as effective as taxonomic identity in terms of response reliability. 相似文献
