ABSTRACT. Electroantennogram (EAG) responses of male and female carrot flies, Psila rosae F. (Diptera: Psilidae), were recorded to thirty-six volatile plant constituents. The most distinct EAG responses were obtained to: (1) the general green leaf volatiles 1-hexanol, trans-2-hexen-1-ol and cis-3-hexen-1-ol, their isomers cis-2-hexen-1-ol and trans-3-hexen-1-ol, the alcohol 1-heptanol, the ester cis-3-hexenyl acetate and the leaf aldehydes hexanal and trans-2-hexenal, and (2) from four compounds associated with the umbelliferous host plants of this insect, namely trans-methyl-iso-eugenol, β-caryophyllene, linalool and trans-2-nonenal. Higher responses were elicited by the leaf aldehydes than by the corresponding alcohols. Although the absolute amplitude of the female response was over twice that of the male, there were no differences between the relative responses to the compounds tested in both sexes, with the exception of a much higher response to the leaf aldehydes in the male. The shape of the EAG evoked by the various compounds was consistently different, with the slowest recovery being recorded for trans-methyl-iso-eugenol. While the antennal olfactory receptors of the carrot fly are sensitive to the closely related general green leaf volatiles, they are most specifically tuned to the aldehyde component of this green odour complex. In addition, the ability of this insect to discriminate between different plants may be augmented by the perception of a group of more host specific volatiles. The conformity of the responses of males and females to the compounds tested may indicate that host plant volatiles plays an additional role as an aggregation cue for both sexes.  相似文献

In this paper we examined the notion that plant foraging for resources in heterogeneous environments must involve: (1) plasticity at the level of individual modules in reaction to localized environmental signals; and (2) the potential for modification of these responses either by the signals received from connected modules that may be exposed to different conditions, or by the signals reflecting the overall resource status of the plant. A conceptual model is presented to illustrate how plant foraging behaviour is achieved through these processes acting in concert, from the signal reception through signal transduction to morphological or physiological response. Evidence to support the concept is reviewed, using selective root placement under nutritionally heterogeneous conditions and elongation responses of stems and petioles to shade as examples. We discussed how the adoption of this model can promote understanding of the ecological significance of foraging behaviour. We also identified a need to widen the experimental repertoires of both molecular physiology and ecology in order to increase our insight into both the regulation and functioning of foraging responses, and their relationship with the patterns of environmental heterogeneity under which plants have evolved.  相似文献

Summer heatwaves promote blooms of harmful cyanobacteria   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13  
Dense surface blooms of toxic cyanobacteria in eutrophic lakes may lead to mass mortalities of fish and birds, and provide a serious health threat for cattle, pets, and humans. It has been argued that global warming may increase the incidence of harmful algal blooms. Here, we report on a lake experiment where intermittent artificial mixing failed to control blooms of the harmful cyanobacterium Microcystis during the summer of 2003, one of the hottest summers ever recorded in Europe. To understand this failure, we develop a coupled biological–physical model investigating how competition for light between buoyant cyanobacteria, diatoms, and green algae in eutrophic lakes is affected by the meteorological conditions of this extreme summer heatwave. The model consists of a phytoplankton competition model coupled to a one-dimensional hydrodynamic model, driven by meteorological data. The model predicts that high temperatures favour cyanobacteria directly, through increased growth rates. Moreover, high temperatures also increase the stability of the water column, thereby reducing vertical turbulent mixing, which shifts the competitive balance in favour of buoyant cyanobacteria. Through these direct and indirect temperature effects, in combination with reduced wind speed and reduced cloudiness, summer heatwaves boost the development of harmful cyanobacterial blooms. These findings warn that climate change is likely to yield an increased threat of harmful cyanobacteria in eutrophic freshwater ecosystems.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. We tested the hypothesis that interspecific competition between two grass-feeding stenodemine bug species ( Notostira elongata Geoffroy and Megaloceraeu recticornis Geoffroy) was capable of causing population-scale mortality in the field.
2. N.elongata nymphs were added to two field enclosures in which the M.recti-cornis population was to hatch. In one of these enclosures the grass Arrhena-therum elatius L., on which only M.recticornis can feed, was also added. Population changes of the bug species were then monitored. An unmanipulated enclosure and an unfenced plot of grassland were used as controls.
3. The results demonstrated that N.elongata lowered the survival of M.recticornis and that this effect was removed by the addition of A.elatius . The results also suggested that N.elongata suffered less from the effects of competition with M.recticornis when the latter had access to the refuge foodplant.
4. Interspecific competition was rare among members of the grass-feeding stenodemine guild in the area studied. Only one out of fifteen possible pairs competed, and this competition occurred only under special circumstances.  相似文献

Flooding imposes stress upon terrestrial plants since it severely hampers gas exchange rates between the shoot and the environment. The resulting oxygen deficiency is considered to be the major problem for submerged plants. Oxygen microelectrode studies have, however, shown that aquatic plants maintain relatively high internal oxygen pressures under water, and even may release oxygen via the roots into the sediment, also in dark. Based on these results, we challenge the dogma that oxygen pressures in submerged terrestrial plants immediately drop to levels at which aerobic respiration is impaired. The present study demonstrates that the internal oxygen pressure in the petioles of Rumex palustris plants under water is indeed well above the critical oxygen pressure for aerobic respiration, provided that the air‐saturated water is not completely stagnant. The beneficial effect of shoot acclimation of this terrestrial plant species to submergence for gas exchange capacity is also shown. Shoot acclimation to submergence involved a reduction of the diffusion resistance to gases, which was not only functional by increasing diffusion of oxygen into the plant, but also by increasing influx of CO2, which enhances underwater photosynthesis.  相似文献

Soil flooding results in unusually low oxygen concentrations and high ethylene concentrations in the roots of plants. This gas composition had a strongly negative effect on root elongation of two Rumex species. The effect of low oxygen concentrations was less severe when roots contained aerenchymatous tissues, such as in R. palustris Sm. R. thyrsiflorus Fingerh., which has little root porosity, was much more affected. Ethylene had an even stronger effect on root elongation than hypoxia, since very small concentrations (0.1 cm3 m?3) reduced root extension in the two species, and higher concentrations inhibited elongation more severely than did anoxia in the culture medium. Thus, ethylene contributes strongly to the negative effects of flooding on root growth. An exception may be the highly aerenchymatous, adventitious roots of R. palustris. Aerenchyma in these roots provides a low-resistance diffusion pathway for both endogenously produced ethylene and shoot-derived oxygen. This paper shows that extension by roots of R. palustris in flooded soil depends almost completely on this shoot-derived oxygen, and that aerenchyma prevents accumulation of growth-inhibiting levels of ethylene in the root.  相似文献

Loss of Human Genetic Markers in Man-Chinese Hamster Somatic Cell Hybrids   总被引:23,自引:0,他引:23  
MAN-MOUSE somatic cell hybrids are useful for the study of genetic linkage in man because the human chromosomes are preferentially lost and most murine and human forms of homologous isozymes are clearly distinguishable1,2. There are, however, certain limitations in this system which call for the introduction of other interspecific somatic cell hybrids. (1) Not all the enzyme phenotypes of man and mouse are easily distinguishable by conventional electrophoretic procedures. (2) Groups of human chromosomes may be preferentially retained or lost in the man-mouse hybrids3. We do not know whether such groups form regular patterns and are constant for a particular hybrid type. (3) The frequency and types of chromosomal rearrangements, which has been reported in man-mouse hybrids, might be different in other human interspecific hybrids.  相似文献
