Light, fluorescence and electron microscopy were employed to follow the development of the endodermis in cluster roots and lateral roots of Grevillea robusta A. Cunn. ex R. Br. Endodermal cells had three different origins: rootlet endodermis arose from the rootlet meristem; endodermis covering the primordium shortly after initiation came from division of parental endodermis; cells at the junction between parent and rootlet endodermis developed from re-differentiated rootlet cortical cells. In the cluster root, the Casparian band formed in three ways, and was not initially present opposite the two sets of single xylem elements in the rootlet stele. A new clearing technique was developed that allowed visualization of xylem, suberized endodermis, Casparian band formation and phenolic compounds. In lateral roots, endodermal differentiation was asynchronous, but was related to position relative to protoxylem poles. However, the observed delay began before these poles had differentiated. At the tip of mature rootlets, which are determinate, the endodermis terminates in a 'dome' of cells, with the initial cell differentiating as an endodermal cell. Results are discussed in terms of determinate development in roots and the spatial and temporal contexts within which this development takes place.  相似文献

Abstract. The potential role of stomatal closure in the control of xylem embolism is investigated by means of a simple model of hydraulic flow in plants. Maintenance of a maximally efficient conducting system requires the stomata to close in an appropriate fashion as evaporative demand increases in order to prevent shoot water potentials falling below the threshold value at which cavitations occur. The model showed that the optimal stomatal behaviour required depends on soil water availability. Further analysis of the model demonstrated that there could be certain circumstances where loss of a proportion of the conducting tissue by embolisms can, perhaps surprisingly, be beneficial in terms of maximizing stomatal aperture and hence short-term productivity. The results are discussed in relation to the signals controlling stomatal aperture, and it is shown that (1) optimal control cannot be obtained using information on leaf water potential alone, and (2) information relating to soil water potential is a necessary requirement for optimal control.  相似文献

Nodules of the aquatic mimosoid legume Neptunia plena (L.) Benth.were always found associated with roots but not stems. Theyappeared macroscopically 10 and 20 d after inoculation on plantsgrown hydroponically and in vermiculite, respectively. The developmentof nitrogen-fixing cells occurred in a series of stages notyet reported in legume nodule formation: initial infection wasapparently intercellular and rhizobia spread between cells andthrough intercellular spaces before penetrating individual hostcells by means of infection threads. Subsequently nodule developmentwas broadly similar to that described for indeterminate papilionoidnodules. The infection threads of Neptunia and pea nodules containeda matrix with a common epitope, which was, in Neptunia, extrudedfrom the infection thread at the point of bacterial release. The central tissue contained infected and interstitial cellsand was surrounded by a three-layered cortex and a phellem.Bounding the infected region was a layer two to three cellsthick with large, unoccluded intercellular spaces. Externalto this was a layer, one or more cells thick, in which the cellwalls were interlocked, reducing the number of radially orientedintercellular spaces. The outer layer, several cells thick,contained intercellular spaces many of which were occluded.These features did not vary with growth conditions in a waywhich might influence oxygen diffusion characteristics. However,the phellem of water-cultured nodules was much more aerenchymatousthan that of vermiculite-grown nodules. Symptoms of corky root disease of Douglas-fir seedlings include: (I) swollen tap- and lateral roots; (2) paucity of lateral roots; and (3) stunted shoot growth. In diseased roots, the primary cortex persisted and enlarged, but secondary vascular tissues, periderm, pericycle and endodermis were reduced. Cylindrocarpon destructans was the fungus most frequently isolated from cortical cells and symptoms were induced by massive inoculum of some isolates but not by dispersed inoculum nor by extracts from cultures. Whereas symptoms first appeared 2 months after seeds sown in May germinated, C. destructans was rarely isolated until 4 months after germination. Relatively more colonies of C. destructans were isolated from corky roots in the winter than in the summer, when Fusarium oxysporum or Mycelium radicis atrovirens were more abundant. Populations of the plant-parasitic nematode Xiphinema bakeri on roots and in adhering soil were highest 2 months after germination and during the summer, correlating positively with the per cent of tap-root affected and negatively with numbers of lateral roots.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were used to assess: (1) whether size assortative mating occurred in the New Zealand amphipod Paracalliope fluviatilis and (2) hypotheses developed to explain size assortative mating. We found that assortative mating occurred and that larger females carried more eggs, suggesting they may be more valuable as mates. Laboratory experiments were then used to determine whether: (1) male size influenced the size of the female selected (mechanical constraints hypothesis); (2) male size influenced pairing success in the presence of competition (intrasexual selection hypothesis); (3) take‐overs of females occurred and whether large males were more successful (intrasexual selection hypothesis); (4) guard duration varied relative to male and female size (guard duration hypothesis); and (5) females had control over pairing success and guard duration (intersexual selection hypothesis). Although there was evidence to suggest the existence of intrasexual competition for mates (i.e. both small and large males preferred large females), there was no evidence of overt competition (i.e. takeovers of paired females). There was also no difference with respect to how long small and large males guarded females, but large females were guarded longer by both male size classes. Females handicapped by having their mobility reduced were guarded for the same duration as control females but males were more likely to pair with handicapped females, suggesting that they were easier to amplex. Given the lack of evidence for direct male–male competition or female choice, we suggest that assortative mating may be the result of: (1) indirect competition (e.g. in situ large males may be better able to access and amplex the largest females) or (2) female resistance to small males in combination with higher costs that small males may incur in securing large females. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 92 , 173–181.  相似文献

Abstract. Tree-ring indices (TRIs) of annual growth rings in stems of Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii ) growing near a copper smelter showed reduced growth during two multi-year time periods in the past. These periods coincided with World Wars I and II, which are known to represent periods of particularly high SO2 emissions from the smelter. Reduced growth was correlated with less negative stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C) in cellulose purified from wood formed in such years. Based on current models for 13C/12C in plants, these results indicate that exposure to air pollution resulted in reduced concentration of CO2 in the intercellular air spaces of the needles. This is consistent with the hypothesis that stomatal closure resulted in impaired photosynthesis and reduced growth during past episodes of high air pollution. The pollution-related change in δ13C was superimposed on a change with time in δ13C, independent of growth, by - 1.4 per mil from 1902 to 1984.  相似文献
