Data are presented on the segregation of resistance to four races of Bremia lactucae in the F2 progenies of crosses involving 15 resistant and various susceptible lettuce cultivars. Most of these data and those recently published by other workers fit the systematic model for the genetics of race specific resistance to B. lactucae proposed by Crute & Johnson(1976). Seven different dominant resistance genes of major effect were found. There was also evidence of a pair of dominant genes with complementary effect, one of which may sometimes be effective on its own. Two of the genes may be linked and another may have two different alleles for resistance at the same locus. The resistance conferred by these genes is specified in relation to two British, two Dutch and four French races of the fungus. Resistance genotypes are proposed for 16 cultivars.  相似文献

Leaf diffusion resistance interpreted as stomatal resistance,leaf water potential (w), solute potential (s) and leaf turgorpotential (p) of the chilling sensitive species Phaseolus vulgariswere determined during chilling at 4 °C in the light. Bothchill-hardened and non-hardened plants were used. For comparison,the chilling resistant species Pisum sativum was also used. The results for chilled P. sativum were similar to those obtainedfor chill-hardened P. vulgaris plants receiving a chilling treatment.In both cases a reduction in stomatal aperture and the maintenanceof a positive leaf turgor were the responses to chilling. Leavesof chilled but non-hardened P. vulgaris plants were found tomaintain open stomata throughout the chilling treatment despitea severe wilt developing after 7 h at 4 °C. This was incontrast to the chill-resistant P. sativum. which showed a rapidclosing and subsequent re-opening of the stomata to a new reducedaperture. During the first 12 h of chilling wof P. vulgaris leaves changedfrom –0.47 MPa to –1.24 MPa. On more prolonged chillingw tended to return to pre-chilling values. In addition. p decreasedfrom 0.42 MPa to zero after only 9 h of chilling, and remainedat this value for the remainder of the chilling period, s, changedrapidly from –0.89 MPa to –1.35 MPa in the first7.5 h, and after 9 h. w and s, were equal, i.e. zero p. In contrast,the chilling resistant plant P. sativum maintained a positivep throughout the chilling period, and there was little differencebetween values of w, and s in control and chilled leaves. Isolates of raspberry bushy dwarf virus (RBDV) occurring in the field at East Mailing Research Station (EMRS), and an isolate from raspberry seed imported from the USSR, were found to differ from the Scottish type isolate (D200) of RBDV in that they infected red raspberry cultivars that are resistant, possibly immune, to isolate D200. Of several red raspberry, blackberry and hybrid berry cultivars and EMRS raspberry selections graft-inoculated with these recently discovered RBDV isolates only two raspberry cvs (Haida and Rannaya Sladkaya) and one EMRS selection did not become infected. Differences in the conclusions reached in two previous studies on the inheritance of resistance to RBDV in raspberry can be explained by the use of virus isolates that differed in Rubus host range.  相似文献

Increased body size in Brachyteles has been regarded as an important evolutionary adaptation that allowed a greater reliance on leaves compared to other more frugivorous Atelidae, but its association with muriqui positional behavior and substrate use is still unknown. Here, we present original data on the feeding and resting postures of the northern muriqui (Brachyteles hypoxanthus) and evaluate predictions about the relationships between body size, postural behavior, and substrate use derived from previously published data for other atelids (e.g. Alouatta, Ateles, and Lagothrix). The study was undertaken from August 2002 to July 2003 on a large group of well‐habituated muriquis inhabiting the Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural – Felíciano Miguel Abdala in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Consistent with our predictions, we found that B. hypoxanthus was highly suspensory during postural feeding (60.9%) and commonly used tail–hind limb suspension/horizontal tripod (38.0%) or tail–forelimb/hind limb suspension (21.4%). However, although tail‐suspensory postures permitted the muriquis to use the terminal canopy and small‐sized substrates, these areas were also accessed via tail‐assisted above‐branch postural behaviors involving multiple substrates. Unexpectedly, tail‐suspensory postures were found to be frequently associated with large substrates, tree trunks, and the understory. We suggest that Brachyteles’ ability to access food resources from all areas of a feeding tree and from tree crowns at different canopy levels may account for their ability to efficiently exploit food resources in seasonal disturbed forest fragments of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest today. Following conjugation of the hypotrichous ciliate Euplotes aediculatus, the posterior fragments of the old (prezygotic) macronucleus persist until after the first vegetative division. These fragments remain viable during exconjugant development as shown by their ability to regenerate should the cell's new macronucleus be damaged. It thus seemed possible that these parental nuclear fragments might participate in the development of the new macronucleus and/or the crucial post-conjugant cortical reorganization that restores the exconjugant cell's ability to feed. This idea was tested by damaging the posterior fragments with various doses of microbeam ultraviolet (UV) light and assessing the results of such treatment on subsequent cortical and nuclear development. When the posterior fragments of the macronucleus were irradiated at the beginning of cortical morphogenesis, the new macronucleus in 1/3 to 1/2 of the cells assumed a “folded” appearance but did not mature. These cells did not undergo cortical reorganization. Cells irradiated at earlier stages did not detectably develop an oral apparatus; their new macronucleus remained arrested at the spherical anlage stage. The results show that the posterior fragments of the parental macronucleus are necessary for normal nuclear and cortical development. These old nuclear fragments appear to influence the growing macronuclear anlage directly and probably the cortex as well. There also appears to be an information flow from the non-irradiated partner of a persistently joined exconjugant doublet to its irradiated counterpart, enabling normal anlage and cortex development in the irradiated cell.  相似文献

The principal axis model (PAM) uses a principal axis and anellipse to characterize the variation in the relationship betweenthe seed (SWT) and plant (PWT) weights of individual plantswithin a crop. The theoretical linkage between the magnitudeand variability of plant harvest index (PHI), and thereforeseed yield per unit area, and changes in the components of thePAM was examined using data from four field pea (Pisum sativumL.) genotypes sown at 9, 49, 100, 225 and 400 plants m-2. Astrong linear relationship (R 2>93.8%) between SWT and PWTand a negative SWT-axis intercept were confirmed for all crops.Analyses indicated that decreased variability of PHI withina crop would result from selection to: (a ) increase the SWT-axisintercept of the PAM; (b ) increase the slope of the PAM; (c) optimize the ellipse location; and (d ) minimize the deviationaround the principal axis. The first three methods were usedto explain yield differences (P <0.05) among genotypes ofdifferent populations. A potential strategy for single plant selection based on thePAM is proposed. This may enable early generation (F4) selectionof small, high performing plants that may be ideal crop ideotypes.A theoretical example of the strategy is presented, with differencesamong selections based on the PAM, SWT or harvest index highlighted.
