ABA Levels and Effects in Chilled and Hardened Phaseolus vulgaris   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
Leaf abscisic acid (ABA) levels of chilled P. vulgaris weremeasured after 18 h chilling at 5°C, at a saturation deficitof 1.24 g m–3 (SD), and after chilling in a water-saturatedatmosphere. Changes were also followed during a chill hardeningperiod of 4 d at 12°C, 2.1 g m–3 SD. It was foundthat hardening resulted in an almost 5. fold increase in ABAlevels after 3 d at 12°C, and this decreased to approximatelycontrol levels on the fourth day. Subsequent chilling of hardenedplants produced no change in ABA levels from that of controlplants (22° C). In contrast, non-hardened plants chilledat 1.24 g m–3 SD had ABA levels almost 3 times the levelof control plants. However, chilling in a water-saturated atmosphereresulted in a decrease in ABA levels. In addition, the response of leaf diffusion resistance (LDR)to exogenous ABA fed via the transpiration stream was measuredat 5 ° C and 22° C in hardened and non-hardened plants.Use of tritium-labelled ABA was made to calculate the stomatalsensitivity to ABA. It was found that exogenous ABA caused anincreased in LDR at 22°C in both hardened and non-hardenedplants. However, the sensitivity of the hardened plants to ABAwas greater in terms of rate of closure and amount of ABA requiredto close the stomata. At 5°C, however, ABA caused stomatalopening and the maintainance of open stomata in non-hardenedplants. In hardened plants, ABA caused stomatal closure at 5°C.These results are discussed in relation to the locking-openresponse of chilled P. vulgaris stomata. Differences in tuber initiation, tuber growth and partitionof assimilate during development were investigated in six localsweet potato cultivars. Study of the quantitative morphogenesisof root types in the sweet potato root system indicated thattuber initiation was completed by 8 weeks after planting inmost cultivars and frustrated thereafter. Subsequent differencesin patterns of tuber development were not obviously relatedto final tuber yield. Thus, high yield resulted either froma short period of rapid tuber growth or a longer period of slowertuber growth. Maximum shoot growth was achieved by week 12 inall except one cultivar, and the cessation of shoot growth resultedin either increases or decreases in tuber growth rate or hadno affect on the rate of tuber growth (cv. A28/7). The partitionof assimilate to tubers at final harvest was the parameter mostclosely related to the yield of the six cultivars studied, butthere was some evidence that such partition was related to totaldry weight. It is suggested that limiting factors in sweet potatotuber yield, e.g. assimilate production and transport or capacityfor tuber growth varied with the cultivar studied.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. An ultrastructural study of the myxamoebae of Acrasis rosea in the vegetative, aggregative and culminative stages was made. An intracytoplasmic system of microfibrillar bundles develops as the cells enter the aggregative stage and commence the morphogenetic sequence leading to the construction of a fruiting body. The fibrillar bundles disappear in the cells of the mature fruiting body. No relevant ultrastructural differences were observed between spores, stalk cells and microcysts. Each of these cells is surrounded by a single-layered coat of fibrillar material that is oriented parallel to the cell surface. Tubular structures were observed between the plasma membrane and the cell coat. The tubules may be layered along the cell periphery or they may be recessed in pockets formed by the plasma membrane. They resemble lomasomes typical of fungal cells. The myxamoebae of A. rosea clearly differ from the Dictyostelium-type myxamoebae in mitochondrial structure, the presence of lamellate structures in the nucleolus and the absence of prespore vacuoles.  相似文献

This study measured the quantities of effective pollen vectors and their pollen loads arriving at the canopies of dioecious tropical rain forest trees in north-east Queensland. Population flowering synchrony, effective pollinator populations and pollen loads transferred between staminate and pistillate trees were compared among three insect-pollinated tree species. All three were visited by a wide range of insects, 75% of which (mostly 3–6 mm long) carried conspecific pollen. Fewer than 8% of individual insects were found to be carrying single-species pollen exclusively and none could be described as specialist pollen foragers. The introduced honeybee carried greater quantities of pollen than any native species but was not necessarily a reliable pollinator. The brief flowering periods in Neolitsea dealbata (3–4 weeks) and Litsea leefeana (4–5 weeks) populations were synchronized among individuals. Flowering in the Diospyros pentamera population extended over 15 weeks and most individuals were in flower for most of this period. Staminate trees began flowering earlier, produced more flowers and attracted relatively more insects than did pistillate trees, suggesting a density-dependent response of pollinators to flowering performance. Pollen was trapped in greater quantities on insects at staminate trees than at pistillate trees. Insect numbers increased at peak flowering periods and Diptera were the most abundant flower visitors. Anthophilous Coleoptera were more numerous at staminate than at pistillate trees in all three tree species populations. Larger quantities of pollen were mobilized during peak flowering times although the greatest quantities were transferred to pistillate canopies towards the end of the population flowering periods. Diptera carried pollen more often to pistillate N. dealbata and L. leefeana trees than did other groups whereas Coleoptera carried pollen more often to pistillate D. pentamera trees. The two contrasting flowering performances in the three tree species are discussed with reference to mechanisms that facilitate pollen transfer between staminate and pistillate trees.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. The functional diversity of vertebrate skeletal musclelargely depends upon its structure. An important aspect of thisis its hierarchical design. At the cellular level, muscle fibersform three categories whose functional properties grade intoeach other: slow-oxidative fibers with high endurance to fatigue,fast-oxidative\glycolytic fibers also endurant but with greatermetabolic diversity, and fast-glycolytic fibers with limitedendurance but quick response. This partitioning of functionalproperties found among single muscle fibers is conserved ata second level of the structural hierarchy, since the groupof myofibers innervated by a single motor neuron (together calleda motor unit) is composed of the same fiber type. Differentmotor units may be recruited in an orderly pattern dependingupon the functional demands of a particular behavior. Finally,groups of motor units innervated by axons travelling togetherin the primary nerve branches may form discrete neuromuscularcompartments at a third level of structural hierarchy. Differentmotor units may be found in regional arrays in these compartmentsso that slow or fast units tend to be clumped together and maybe recruited together as larger functional units. This hierarchicalorganization of skeletal muscle may be a fundamental vertebrateplan that allows the diversity of functions so evident in vertebratebehavior.  相似文献

In Perthshire (Scotland), Black Grouse Tetrao tetrix broods less than 3 weeks old preferred herb-rich grassy flushes with Bog Myrtle Myrica gale , whereas in the northern Pennines (England), all broods were found on grass-dominated moorland or enclosed rough grazing habitats chiefly of grass and rushes. In both areas, broods used habitats with taller vegetation that had more invertebrates, particularly moth caterpillars and sawfly larvae (Sym-phyta, Hymenoptera). Within preferred habitats, broods were found in vegetation containing more flies (Diptera), plant bugs (Hemiptera) and ichneumon flies (Hymenoptera) than at randomly chosen sites. The main hatch of Black Grouse chicks in Perthshire coincided with the peak availability of moth caterpillars preferred by chicks. Broods in the Pennines hatched 1 week later than those in Scotland, and this later breeding in the south may be an adaptation to utilize the later peak biomass of sawfly larvae, the chief insect prey there. Data collected for Capercaillie Tetrao urogallus suggest a similar degree of synchronization between their peak hatch and the availability of moth caterpillars on Bilberry Vaccinium myrtillus.  相似文献

Measurements of the organic carbon inventory, its stable isotopic composition and radiocarbon content were used to deduce vegetation history from two soil profiles in arboreal and grassy savanna ecotones in the Brazilian Pantanal. The Pantanal is a large floodplain area with grass-dominated lowlands subject to seasonal flooding, and arboreal savanna uplands which are only rarely flooded. Organic carbon inventories were lower in the grassy savanna site than in the upland arboreal savanna site, with carbon decreasing exponentially with depth from the surface in both profiles. Changes in 13C of soil organic matter (SOM) with depth differed markedly between the two sites. Differences in surface SOM 13C values reflect the change from C3 to C4 plants between the sites, as confirmed by measurements of 13C of vegetation and the soil surface along a transect between the upland closed-canopy forest and lowland grassy savanna. Changes of 13C in SOM with depth at both sites are larger than the 3–4 per mil increases expected from fractionation associated with organic matter decomposition. We interpret these as recording past changes in the relative abundance of C3 and C4 plants at these sites. Mass balances with 14C and 13C suggest that past vegetational changes from C3 to C4 plants in the grassy savanna, and in the deeper part of the arboreal savanna, occurred between 4600 and 11 400 BP, when major climatic changes were also observed in several places of the South American Continent. The change from C4 to C3, observed only in the upper part of the arboreal savanna, was much more recent (1400 BP), and was probably caused by a local change in the flooding regime.  相似文献

A field experiment on winter wheat in autumn 1991 investigated the effect of the rhabditid nematode, Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, applied to soil at five dose rates (108 - 1010 infective larvae ha-1) immediately after seed sowing, on slug populations and damage to seeds and seedlings. The nematode was compared with methiocarb pellets broadcast at recommended field rate immediately after drilling and no molluscicide treatment. Slug damage to wheat seeds and seedlings was assessed 6 and 13 wk after drilling. Seedling survival increased and slug grazing damage to seedlings declined linearly with increasing log nematode dose. These two measures of slug damage were combined to give an index of undamaged plant equivalents, which also increased linearly with increasing log nematode dose. ANOVA showed that, after 6 wk, there were significantly more undamaged plant equivalents on plots treated with the two highest nematode doses (3 × 109 and 1 × 1010 ha-1) than on untreated plots, but the number of undamaged plant equivalents on methiocarb-treated plots was not significantly greater than that on untreated plots. Slug populations were assessed by refuge trapping and soil sampling. Deroceras reticulatum was the commonest of several species of slugs recorded. During the first 4 wk after sowing, significantly more slugs were found under refuge traps on plots treated with certain doses of P. hermaphrodita than under traps on untreated plots and more showed signs of nematode infection than expected from the prevalence of infection in slugs from soil samples, suggesting that the presence of P. hermaphrodita altered slug behaviour. Application of P. hermaphrodita had no significant impact on numbers or biomass of slugs in soil during a 27 wk period after treatment, except after 5 wk when slug numbers were inversely related to log nematode dose. However, by this time, numbers in soil samples from untreated plots had declined to levels similar to those in plots treated with the highest dose of nematodes. During the first 5 wk after treatment, c. 20% of slugs in soil samples from untreated plots showed symptoms of nematode infection. It is suggested that this represented the background level of infection in the experimental field rather than spread of infection from treated plots. The apparent lack of impact of P. hermaphrodita on slug numbers and biomass in soil suggests that its efficacy in protecting wheat from slug damage was through inhibition of feeding by infected slugs.  相似文献
