ABSTRACT

Although ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) have been recorded in many species of rodent and in various contexts, e.g. sexual behaviour and aggression, it has not been demonstrated for the endangered Turkish Spiny Mouse Acomys cilicius Spitzenberger. This study investigated whether A. cilicius emits USVs and, if so, how these USVs associated with non-vocalization behaviour. Ultrasonic recording equipment was set up for 12 days in an off-exhibit enclosure of A. cilicius at Bristol Zoo. At least seven different types of USV were recorded. For eight of the 12 study days, ultrasonic and video recording equipment were run concurrently. From these observations it was found that emission of USVs were associated with sexual behaviour, aggression and social investigation. The results of this study show for the first time that captive A. cilicius produce USVs that resemble those produced by other rodent species, including its close relative the Egyptian Spiny Mouse A. cahirinus Desmarest. As these findings apply only to a captive Turkish Spiny Mouse population, additional work should be carried out to investigate the behaviour and USV production in the wild in addition to further research on captive populations investigating the apparent communicative function of these vocalizations.  相似文献

Further evidence that dioscorea latent virus is a potexvirus   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Dioscorea latent virus (DLV) was isolated from Dioscoreafloribunda but was not detected in any of 37 cvs of D. alata, D. bulbifera, D. esculenta or D. rotundata from eight countries. It was readily sap-transmitted to 13 of 34 species from five of 12 families; it induced symptomless systemic infection in Nicotiana benthamiana and N. megalosiphon, but only symptomless local infection in other hosts. DLV was stable in vitro: sap from infected N. megalosiphon was still infective after 10 min at 75–80 oC but not 85 oC, after dilution to 10-6 but not 10-7, and after at least 12 months at 23 oC. DLV was not transmitted through seed, by contact or by the aphids Aphis gossypii and Myzus persicae. DLV had filamentous particles most of which measured c. 350–900 nm in purified preparations, with two modal lengths of 445 and 875 nm; the particles sedimented as two components with sedimentation coefficients of 111 S and 131 S and had a buoyant density in caesium chloride of 1–33 g cm-3. The virus had a single nucleic acid species with a mol. wt of 2–3 ± 04 × 106 and usually produced two protein bands (mol. wts 24 900 and 23 100) in SDS-PAGE, although virus preparations made in the presence of chloroform yielded only the larger polypeptide. DLV was serologically distantly related to commelina X and lily X viruses, but not to 11 other established or possible members of the potexvirus group. These results provide further evidence that DLV is a distinct but definitive potexvirus.  相似文献

1. We studied the effects of different temperature regimes on leaf litter processing in three forested Appalachian headwater streams of different pH (mean pH = 4.2, 6.5, 7.5).
2. We compared leaf breakdown rates, microbial biomass and macroinvertebrate shredder density and biomass between two 12-week processing periods (October–January and November–February) in each stream. Leaf processing rates were calculated both as k (day–1) and k d (degree day–1).
3. There were no significant differences in processing rates ( k day–1) between the two study periods for any leaf species in any stream. The average difference in temperature between the two study periods was 175 degree days. Shredder density was significantly higher during the earlier study period on 40% of the sample dates, but shredder biomass was not significantly different between the two study periods. ATP concentration was significantly higher during the early study period for 60% of the sample dates.
4. More significant differences in these variables (shredder density and biomass, ATP concentration) were seen among the three study streams than between the two study periods. This indicates that in this study other factors, particularly stream pH, contributed more to processing rate variation than did differences in thermal regime.  相似文献

Ullucus tuberosus (Basellaceae) plants from 12 locations in the Andean highlands of Peru and Bolivia contained complexes of either three or four viruses. Specimens from six sites in Peru contained a potexvirus, a tobamovirus, a potyvirus and a comovirus, but those from another location lacked the potexvirus. All samples from five sites in Bolivia lacked the tobamovirus. The potexvirus (PMV/U) is a strain of papaya mosaic virus differing slightly from the type strain (PMV/T) in inducing milder symptoms in some common hosts and failing to infect a few other species. It symptomlessly infected U. tuberosus, and infected 15 of 29 species from seven of nine other families. PMV/U showed a close serological relationship to PMV/T and to boussingaultia mosaic virus and a distant relationship to commelina virus X, but it is apparently unrelated to any of ten other potexviruses. The tobamovirus (TMV/U) induced symptomless or inconspicuous infection in U. tuberosus, and infected 21 of 30 species from six of eight other families. It showed a very distant serological relationship to some strains of ribgrass mosaic, tobacco mosaic and tomato mosaic viruses, but failed to react with antisera to cucumber green mottle mosaic, frangipani mosaic, odontoglossum ringspot and sunn-hemp mosaic viruses. The potyvirus, tentatively designated ullucus mosaic virus (UMV), alone in U. tuberosus induced leaf symptoms indistinguishable from the chlorotic mottling and distortion found in naturally infected plants. UMV infected 12 of 20 species from four other families, and was transmitted in the non-persistent manner by Myzus persicae. It showed a distant serological relationship to only two (bidens mottle and alstroemeria mosaic) of 25 members or possible members of the potyvirus group tested. Some hosts and properties of the comovirus are described in an accompanying paper. None of the four viruses infected potato (Solanum tuberosum) and, with the possible exception of UMV, they differed from viruses reported previously to infect three other vegetatively propagated Andean crops (Oxalis tuberosa, Arracacia xanthorrhiza and Tropaeolum tuberosum).  相似文献

The biogenesis of oxalic acid in Oxalis corniculata has beeninvestigated. In O. corniculata the bulk of the oxalic acidis produced by CO2 fixation both in light and in darkness butthe rate of its photosynthetic formation is much higher thanin darkness. Several other plants some of which are known toaccumulate oxalic acid e.g., Biophytum sensitivum, Averrhoacarambola, Impatiens balsamina, Amorphophallus campanulatusand Colocassia antiquorum also fix 14CO2 into oxalic acid photosyntheticallywithin 1 min of exposure to the gas. In O. corniculata 14C canbe detected in oxalic acid within 5 sec and about half of thetotal 14C fixed in the 70% ethanol soluble fraction can be locatedin this compound after 5 min. This is accompanied by a declineof radioactivity in two compounds, the chromatographic behaviourand melting points of one of which and its DNP hydrazone aresimilar to those of an authentic sample of glyoxylic acid. Whenglyoxylate 1, 2-14C is incubated with Oxalis leaf homogenateit is converted to oxalate-14C. Glycolate is also metabolizedto oxalate. The conversion of both glycolate and glyoxylateare favoured by light. The C2 compounds acetate and glycinehowever are utilized rather poorly. Grass for use as silage is widely grown in the UK. However there is little information on the effects of rabbit grazing on crop yield. In a three‐year trial, grass was grown in six enclosures following current agronomic procedures and was subjected to grazing by two population densities of rabbits. The annual yield loss at the end of the trial was found to be 1% per rabbit ha?1. The yield loss per rabbit was calculated to be around 200 kg and the financial loss was calculated as £3.40 per rabbit at 1998 prices (approx. £17 t?1). This new information provides farmers with a better understanding of the economics of damage caused by rabbits enabling them to make more informed decisions as to whether their rabbit population needs to be managed, or whether their crop needs to be protected by some other means.  相似文献

Herbivory by domestic and wild ungulates is a major driver of global vegetation dynamics. However, grazing is not considered in dynamic global vegetation models, or more generally in studies of the effects of environmental change on ecosystems at regional to global scale. An obstacle to this is a lack of empirical tests of several hypotheses linking plant traits with grazing. We, therefore, set out to test whether some widely recognized trait responses to grazing are consistent at the global level. We conducted a meta‐analysis of plant trait responses to grazing, based on 197 studies from all major regions of the world, and using six major conceptual models of trait response to grazing as a framework. Data were available for seven plant traits: life history, canopy height, habit, architecture, growth form (forb, graminoid, herbaceous legume, woody), palatability, and geographic origin. Covariates were precipitation and evolutionary history of herbivory. Overall, grazing favoured annual over perennial plants, short plants over tall plants, prostrate over erect plants, and stoloniferous and rosette architecture over tussock architecture. There was no consistent effect of grazing on growth form. Some response patterns were modified by particular combinations of precipitation and history of herbivory. Climatic and historical contexts are therefore essential for understanding plant trait responses to grazing. Our study identifies some key traits to be incorporated into plant functional classifications for the explicit consideration of grazing into global vegetation models used in global change research. Importantly, our results suggest that plant functional type classifications and response rules need to be specific to regions with different climate and herbivory history.  相似文献
