1. Field experiments were carried out to determine whether animals move into areas of low shear stress during periods of peak flow and therefore avoid hydraulic disturbance.
2. Flow at the scale of 0.05 m2 patches was reduced experimentally by creating artificial 'refugia'. Invertebrate colonization of cages with 1.1 mm mesh sides, which provided such potential refugia by reducing hydraulic forces within the cage, was compared with colonization of cages with coarser (15 mm) mesh which did not restrict the flow.
3. Colonization of these cages was tested over a series of weekly periods in two different streams. Nine trials were completed in a stream with abundant natural flow refugia (Broadstone Stream, SE England), and during three of these trials strong spates occurred. Six trials were completed in a stream with comparatively few natural flow refugia (Dargall Lane, SW Scotland), and peak flows were relatively less.
4. In Broadstone Stream, the relative colonization of refugium cages was greatest during periods of peak flow, suggesting animals had used these low-flow areas as refugia during spates. Use of the artificial refugia did not occur in Dargall Lane, at least at the flows achieved during the trials.
5. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that stream invertebrates accumulate in refugia during high flow disturbances. Whether their distribution among patches is altered by active or passive means remains unclear.  相似文献

1. Sediment resuspension dynamics were investigated in relation to changes in water column nutrients (TP, TN, PO4-P, NO3-N and NH4-N), chlorophyll a and phaeopigment in seven shallow ( Z m < 1.5 m) lakes in South Island, New Zealand, ranging in area from 0.1 to 180 km2.
2. Benthic shear stress, calculated from wind speed, effective fetch and depth, was a considerably better predictor of nutrient and pigment concentrations than wind speed.
3. For TP, TN, chlorophyll a and phaeopigment, sixteen of the possible twenty-eight linear correlations with benthic shear stress were significant at P < 0.05, with 16–87% of the variation being explained by shear stress.
4. Wind decreased the ratios of TN : TP, with ratios exponentially approaching those of the sediments as shear stress increased in four of the lakes.
5. Relationships of dissolved inorganic nutrients to shear stress were considerably weaker than those for total nutrients and showed no consistent trend over the seven lakes.
6. Estimated annual mean TP inclusive of resuspension was over four times higher than that derived from measured calm samples in two lakes.
7. The number of nutrient and pigment parameters that were significantly correlated with shear stress and the strengths of the relationships varied widely from lake to lake. We could establish no simple relationships between these effects and any single characteristic of the lake, sediment, or water.
8. A function is developed to predict the rate of entrainment of TN and TP in response to an applied shear stress, where the independent variables are sediment nutrient content and particle size, and the macrophyte density in the lake.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of CO2 concentration and soilnutrient availability during growth on the subsequent decomposition andnitrogen (N) release from litter of four annual grasses that differ inresource requirements and native habitat. Vulpia microstachys isa native grass found on California serpentine soils, whereas Avenafatua, Bromus hordaceus, and Lolium multiflorum areintroduced grasses restricted to more fertile sandstone soils (Hobbs & Mooney 1991). Growth in elevated CO2 altered litter C:N ratio,decomposition, and N release, but the direction and magnitude of thechanges differed among plant species and nutrient treatments. ElevatedCO2 had relatively modest effects on C:N ratio of litter,increasing this ratio in Lolium roots (and shoots at high nutrients),but decreasing C:N ratio in Avena shoots. Growth of plants underelevated CO2 decreased the decomposition rate of Vulpialitter, but increased decomposition of Avena litter from the high-nutrient treatment. The impact of elevated CO2 on N loss fromlitter also differed among species, with Vulpia litter from high-CO2 plants releasing N more slowly than ambient-CO2litter, whereas growth under elevated CO2 caused increased Nloss from Avena litter. CO2 effects on N release in Lolium and Bromus depended on the nutrient regime in whichplants were grown. There was no overall relationship between litter C:Nratio and decomposition rate or N release across species and treatments.Based on our study and the literature, we conclude that the effects ofelevated CO2 on decomposition and N release from litter arehighly species-specific. These results do not support the hypothesis thatCO2 effects on litter quality consistently lead to decreasednutrient availability in nutrient-limited ecosystems exposed to elevatedCO2.  相似文献

Several aspects of the ecology and biology of red grouse (Lagopus lagopus scoticus) could prevent the complete admixture of genes within and between populations. Male red grouse display a high degree of natal philopatry, are territorial, and show less aggression to kin man to non-kin. Such factors acting in combination predict limited male-mediated gene flow, which will promote social structure within a population by the formation of stable kin clusters, and facilitate a rapid rise in allelic coancestry and/or inbreeding. In this study we utilize hypervariable microsatellite polymorphisms to examine the extent of social affiliation between relatives in a moorland population of grouse from NE Scodand. Levels of genetic relatedness between individual male red grouse occupying territories at Glas Choille in die spring and autumn of 1995 were examined, and kin clusters delimited. Nine kin groups (mean size = 2.4 individuals) were identified prior to breeding in the spring, which increased to 11 kin groups (mean size =4.0 individuals) when territories were reformed in the autumn. The majority of tiiose individuals that were recruited into the adult population during the autumn already had a first-order male relative established, supporting the hypothesis that recruitment is facilitated by behavioural interactions among relatives. The demographic and population genetic consequences of philopatric recruitment and kin clustering are examined and discussed.  相似文献

Previous studies have indicated that the common European pipistrelle bat ( Pipistrellus pipistrellus ) comprises two cryptic species, P. pipistrellus and Pipistrellus pygmaeus , which differ in echolocation call frequency and mitochondrial DNA sequence. However, levels of divergence based on nuclear markers have not been examined, and hence the potential for male-mediated gene flow between the species cannot be discounted. Moreover, little is known about population structure and migration patterns in either species. Here, we describe the use of microsatellites to investigate nuclear DNA differentiation between, and the pattern of population genetic structure within, the two cryptic pipistrelle species. In total, 1300 individuals from 82 maternity colonies were sampled across the British Isles and Continental Europe. We show, using multivariate analyses, that colonies of the same species are generally genetically more similar to each other than to those from the other species regardless of geographical location. Our findings support the hypothesis that the species are reproductively isolated. Significant patterns of genetic isolation by distance were identified in both species, indicating that mating may occur before any long-distance autumnal migration. The presence of a sea channel does not confer higher levels of genetic differentiation among colonies over and above distance alone in either species. Differences in genetic population structure were identified between the species, with P. pipistrellus showing a wider range of levels of genetic differentiation among colonies and a stronger relationship between genetic and geographical distance than P. pygmaeus . The immediate effects of tillage on protected soil C and N pools and on trace gas emissions from soils at precultivation levels of native C remain largely unknown. We measured the response to cultivation of CO2 and N2O emissions and associated environmental factors in a previously uncultivated U.S. Midwest Alfisol with C concentrations that were indistinguishable from those in adjacent late successional forests on the same soil type (3.2%). Within 2 days of initial cultivation in 2002, tillage significantly (P=0.001, n=4) increased CO2 fluxes from 91 to 196 mg CO2‐C m?2 h?1 and within the first 30 days higher fluxes because of cultivation were responsible for losses of 85 g CO2‐C m?2. Additional daily C losses were sustained during a second and third year of cultivation of the same plots at rates of 1.9 and 1.0 g C m?2 day?1, respectively. Associated with the CO2 responses were increased soil temperature, substantially reduced soil aggregate size (mean weight diameter decreased 35% within 60 days), and a reduction in the proportion of intraaggregate, physically protected light fraction organic matter. Nitrous oxide fluxes in cultivated plots increased 7.7‐fold in 2002, 3.1‐fold in 2003, and 6.7‐fold in 2004 and were associated with increased soil NO3? concentrations, which approached 15 μg N g?1. Decreased plant N uptake immediately after tillage, plus increased mineralization rates and fivefold greater nitrifier enzyme activity, likely contributed to increased NO3? concentrations. Our results demonstrate that initial cultivation of a soil at precultivation levels of native soil C immediately destabilizes physical and microbial processes related to C and N retention in soils and accelerates trace gas fluxes. Policies designed to promote long‐term C sequestration may thus need to protect soils from even occasional cultivation in order to preserve sequestered C.  相似文献

Increasing housing density is an important component of global land transformation, with major impacts on patterns of biodiversity. However, while there have been many studies of the changes in biodiversity across rural–urban gradients, which are influenced in large part by housing densities, how biodiversity changes across the full range of regional variation in housing density remains poorly understood. Here, we explore these relationships for the richness and abundance of breeding birds across Britain. Total richness, and that of 27 urban indicator species, increased from low to moderate household densities and then declined at greater household densities. The richness of all species increased initially faster with household density than did that of the urban indicator species, but nonurban indicator species richness declined consistently after peaking at a very low housing density. Avian abundance showed a rather different pattern. Total abundance and that summed across all urban indicator species increased over a wide range of household densities, and declined only at the highest household densities. The abundance of individual urban indicator species generally exhibited a hump-shaped relationship with housing density. While there was marked intraspecific variation in the form of such relationships, almost invariably avian abundance declined at housing densities below that at which the UK government requires new developments to be built. Our data highlight the difficulties of maintaining biodiversity while minimising land take for new development. High-density housing developments are associated with declines in many of those species otherwise best able to exploit urban environments, and those components of native biodiversity with which human populations are often most familiar.  相似文献

Effects of xanthene dyes on mycelial growth and conidial germination in three species of entomopathogenic fungi, Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anispoliae and Paecilomyces fumosoroseus, were evaluated in a variety of assay systems. In a disk-diffusion assay, erythrosin B and phloxine B (but not eosin B) produced zones of inhibition in colonies of all three species under continuous exposure to light at disk-loadings of 100mug. None of the dyes produced zones of inhibition in the absence of light at disk loadings of 100mug. Both erythrosin B and phloxine B inhibited mycelial growth of all three species in the light in a dose-dependent manner. Weaker dose-responses for inhibition of growth in the dark were observed for some fungus/dye combinations. Erythrosin B, tested singly, completely inhibited conidial germination in the light in all eight fungal strains tested at 100mug ml-1 medium, but failed to inhibit conidial germination in any of these strains in the dark at the same concentration of dye. For single strains of each of the three fungi, erythrosin B and phloxine B inhibited conidial germination in a dose-dependent manner in the light with IC50s < 6.2mug dye ml-1 medium for all fungus/dye combinations. Phloxine B was a more potent inhibitor of germination than erythrosin B for all three fungal species. At fixed dosages of erythrosin B and phloxine B, inhibition of conidial germination in all three species increased with time of exposure to light. These results constitute the first quantitative demonstration of photodynamic inhibition of conidial germination in fungi by xanthene dyes.  相似文献
