Full accounting of ecosystem carbon (C) pools and fluxes in coastal plain ecosystems remains less studied compared with upland systems, even though the C stocks in these systems may be up to an order of magnitude higher, making them a potentially important component in regional C cycle. Here, we report C pools and CO2 exchange rates during three hydrologically contrasting years (i.e. 2005–2007) in a coastal plain loblolly pine plantation in North Carolina, USA. The daily temperatures were similar among the study years and to the long‐term (1971–2000) average, whereas the amount and timing of precipitation differed significantly. Precipitation was the largest in 2005 (147 mm above normal), intermediate in 2006 (48 mm below) and lowest in 2007 (486 mm below normal). The forest was a strong C sink during all years, sequestering 361 ± 67 (2005), 835 ± 55 (2006) and 724 ± 55 (2007) g C m?2 yr?1 according to eddy covariance measurements of net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NEE). The interannual differences in NEE were traced to drought‐induced declines in canopy and whole tree hydraulic conductances, which declined with growing precipitation deficit and decreasing soil volumetric water content (VWC). In contrast, the interannual differences were small in gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) and ecosystem respiration (ER), both seemingly insensitive to drought. However, the drought sensitivity of GEP was masked by higher leaf area index and higher photosynthetically active radiation during the dry year. Normalizing GEP by these factors enhanced interannual differences, but there were no signs of suppressed GEP at low VWC during any given year. Although ER was very consistent across the 3 years, and not suppressed by low VWC, the total respiratory cost as a fraction of net primary production increased with annual precipitation and the contribution of heterotrophic respiration (Rh) was significantly higher during the wettest year, exceeding new litter inputs by 58%. Although the difference was smaller during the other 2 years (Rh : litterfall ratio was 1.05 in 2006 and 1.10 in 2007), the soils lost about 109 g C m?2 yr?1, outlining their potential vulnerability to decomposition, and pointing to potential management considerations to protect existing soil C stocks.  相似文献

Recent changes in the seasonal timing (phenology) of familiar biological events have been one of the most conspicuous signs of climate change. However, the lack of a standardized approach to analysing change has hampered assessment of consistency in such changes among different taxa and trophic levels and across freshwater, terrestrial and marine environments. We present a standardized assessment of 25 532 rates of phenological change for 726 UK terrestrial, freshwater and marine taxa. The majority of spring and summer events have advanced, and more rapidly than previously documented. Such consistency is indicative of shared large scale drivers. Furthermore, average rates of change have accelerated in a way that is consistent with observed warming trends. Less coherent patterns in some groups of organisms point to the agency of more local scale processes and multiple drivers. For the first time we show a broad scale signal of differential phenological change among trophic levels; across environments advances in timing were slowest for secondary consumers, thus heightening the potential risk of temporal mismatch in key trophic interactions. If current patterns and rates of phenological change are indicative of future trends, future climate warming may exacerbate trophic mismatching, further disrupting the functioning, persistence and resilience of many ecosystems and having a major impact on ecosystem services.  相似文献

The ecophysiology of tropical montane cloud forest (TMCF) trees is influenced by crown‐level microclimate factors including regular mist/fog water inputs, and large variations in evaporative demand, which in turn can significantly impact water balance. We investigated the effect of such microclimatic factors on canopy ecophysiology and branch‐level water balance in the dry season of a seasonal TMCF in Veracruz, Mexico, by quantifying both water inputs (via foliar uptake, FU) and outputs (day‐ and night‐time transpiration, NT). Measurements of sap flow, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential and pressure–volume relations were obtained in Quercus lanceifolia, a canopy‐dominant tree species. Our results indicate that FU occurred 34% of the time and led to the recovery of 9% (24 ± 9.1 L) of all the dry‐season water transpired from individual branches. Capacity for FU was independently verified for seven additional common tree species. NT accounted for approximately 17% (46 L) of dry‐season water loss. There was a strong correlation between FU and the duration of leaf wetness events (fog and/or rain), as well as between NT and the night‐time vapour pressure deficit. Our results show the clear importance of fog and NT for the canopy water relations of Q. lanceifolia.  相似文献

We assessed the ability of several populations of the metal-hyperaccumulator species, Thlaspi caerulescens , to mobilize non-labile cadmium in soils historically contaminated by Pb/Zn mine spoil or sewage sludge. Radio- labile Cd was determined chemically as an ' E -value', [Cd E ], and biologically as an ' L -value', [Cd L ]. For comparison, chloride-extractable Cd, [Cdchlor], was also determined using 1 M CaCl2 as a single-step soil extractant. Values of [Cd L ] were measured for six populations of T. caerulescens that varied substantially in their ability to assimilate soil Cd, and a non-accumulator species with a similar growth habit, Lepidium heterophyllum . Seeds were sown in soil spiked with 109Cd and grown for 9–12 wk in a controlled environment room. Values of [Cd L ] were determined from the specific activity of 109Cd and concentration of Cd in the plant leaves. For the six soils studied, [Cd E ] ranged from 4.9 to 49% of total soil Cd [CdT]. Values of [Cd L ] were, in general, in close agreement with both [Cd E ] and [Cdchlor] and substantially less than [CdT]. However, [Cd L ] showed no correlation with the concentration of Cd in plant tissue, [Cdshoot]. This suggests that, in the soils studied, T. caerulescens did not mobilize non-labile soil Cd by producing root exudates or altering rhizosphere pH. The results imply that there may be significant restrictions to metal bioavailability, even to hyperaccumulator species, in heavily contaminated soils in which a large proportion of the metal may be present in 'non-labile' forms.  相似文献

Alpha-melanotropin (alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone, alpha-MSH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland of most vertebrate animals. This melanotropic peptide, Ac-Ser-Tyr-Ser-Met-Glu-His-Phe-Arg-Trp-Gly-Lys-Pro-Val-NH2, regulates melanin pigmentation of the skin of some mammals. Although MSH may be absent from the human pituitary gland, this peptide can stimulate pigment formation in human skin. We have synthesized several analogues of alpha-MSH, which are superpotent, prolonged-acting, and resistant to inactivation by serum enzymes. One such analogue, [NLe4, D-Phe7]alpha-MSH, has proven particularly useful in a number of physiological studies. In addition, some [Nle4, D-Phe7]-substituted fragment analogues of MSH are even more active than the native hormone, alpha-MSH. For example, these analogues are 100–1,000 times more active than alpha-MSH in stimulating S-91 mouse melanoma tyrosinase activity in vitro. We have successfully labeled one such peptide to high specific activity; this melanotropin, [3H]-Ac-[Nle4, D-Phe7]alpha-MSH4–11NH2, has been shown by others to bind to B16 melanoma cells. We have also conjugated several ligands (fluorescein and biotin) to [Nle4, D-Phe7]alpha-MSH. These melanotropin conjugates might prove useful for melanotropin receptor studies and for the clinical localization of metastatic melanoma. We have demonstrated that [Nle4, D-Phe4]alpha-MSH can be topically applied and transdermally delivered across the skin of mice and humans in vitro, as determined by bioassay and RIA. Initial toxicologic studies indicate that the analogue is nontoxic to mice and is not mutagenic. Studies are underway to determine whether this analogue may prove useful as a “tanning hormone” for increasing the pigmentation of light-skinned individuals or possibly even for treating people with certain hypopigmentary disorders.  相似文献

The forelimbs of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) are unique among mammals as the digits exhibit hyperphalangy, and the entire limb is encased in a soft tissue flipper that functions to generate lift. The typical morphology of cetacean digits has been well documented by detailed anatomical studies. This study however furthers our understanding of cetacean forelimb anatomy by conducting a taxonomically broad survey of cetacean digital anomalies. Forelimb radiographs from museum collections provided the basis upon which we calculated the prevalence and documented the morphology of cetacean digital abnormalities. Results indicated that 11% (n = 255) of toothed whales displayed some type of aberrant ossification: the majority of these cases displayed a fusion of elements within a single digital ray, whereas cases exhibiting branched digits were rare. A small sample of baleen whale radiographs (n = 6) contained the only documented case of baleen whale polydactyly in a specimen of the gray whale (Eschrichtius). Furthermore, some Balaenoptera specimens displayed ossified elements within the interdigital spaces that lacked attachment to the adjacent digits and carpus. ABSTRACT. Eimeria turcicus n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) is reported from the gall bladder of the Mediterranean gecko, Hemidactylus t. turcicus (Linnaeus, 1758) from the Houston Zoo, Texas, USA. Oocysts of this coccidian are elongate and cylindrical, 38.2 × 17.9 (35.2-40.8 × 16.8-20.0)μm, with a smooth, bilayered wall ∼ 1.6 μm thick; shape index 2.1 (1.9-2.3). A polar granule is present, but a micropyle and oocyst residuum are absent. Sporocysts are ovoid, 11.0 × 8.8 (10.0-12.0 × 8.0-9.4) μm, with a smooth, thin wall and suture; shape index 1.3 (1.1-1.4). Each sporocyst contains a residuum measuring 6.0 × 5.1 (4.8-8.0 × 4.8-6.4) μm, additional residual granules scattered among the sporozoites, and two sporozoites that are normally arranged head-to-tail within the sporocyst. Each sporozoite contains a single, ovoid, posterior refractile body and a central nucleus.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The protist Prorocentrum lima , a primary producer of the tumour promoter okadaic acid, is a member of the dinoflagellate class of marine microorganisms. Herein, we have identified and characterized a protein tyrosine kinase (designated PLIK 1A) in P. lima that autophosphorylates almost exclusively on tyrosine residues. PLIK 1A was shown to have an approximate molecular mass of 38 kDa by SDS-PAGE and a native molecular mass within the range of 47–55 kDa by Superdex-75 gel filtration. Phosphoamino acid analysis of autophosphorylated PLIK 1A revealed the presence of phosphotyrosine and autophosphorylated PLJK 1A reacted with monoclonal anti-phosphotyrosine antibodies in a Western immunoblot. In addition, two protein tyrosine phosphatases were identified in P. lima that had apparent molecular masses within the ranges of 150–168 kDa and 73–82 kDa as determined by Superdex-200 gel filtration. These P. lima phosphatases, termed PLPTP-I and PLPTP-II, efficiently dephosphorylated tyrosine phosphorylated myelin basic protein. owever, only PLPTP-I was capable of dephosphorylating the tyrosine phosphorylated substrate angiotensin. Both PLPTP-I and PLPTP-II were able to dephosphorylate tyrosine autophosphorylated PLIK 1A. These data provide the first evidence for reversible tyrosine protein phosphorylation in P. lima by protein tyrosine kinases and phosphatases  相似文献
