ABSTRACT. It has long been thought that the cyst form of Pneumocystis carinii , which can resist host defenses and antimicrobial drugs, is responsible for relapses of P. carinii pneumonia. The thick wall of the cyst is immunogenic and rich in glucosyl/mannosyl and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues. In this study we have demonstrated the presence of a hitherto unreported outer membrane in the cyst wall of P. carinii . This membrane was detected by a combination of techniques, including transmission electron microscopy, freeze-fracture electron microscopy, and membrane labeling with fluorescent lipid analogs following treatment of P. carinii cysts from infected rats for 30 min with Zymolyase, a β-1–3 glucanase. As in gram-negative bacteria and blue-green algae, this 2nd membrane may have an important role in osmoregulation and nutrient utilization; it may also mediate the interaction of P. carinii with its host and serve as a target for drug therapy.  相似文献

Sound production of 11 Mediterranean goby species, belonging to five different genera, have been comparatively analysed on the basis of the quantitative properties of the acoustic signal emitted by the male in both the reproductive and aggressive context. The results obtained showed that three groups of species can be recognized on the basis of signal similarity: the larger sized species (genus Padogobius and Gobius paganellus ) producing tonal sounds, showing high values of pulse rate and low values of duration; the larger-sized species producing grunt sounds (genus Gobius and Zosterisessor ) with low pulse rate and low duration; and the small-sized species producing grunt sounds (genus Pomatoschistus and Knipowitschia ) with low pulse rate and high duration. The comparison between these results and those found in previous studies suggests congruence between the acoustic affinities among species and that obtained by means of morphological and genetic data. Detailed information on spring migration routes of songbirds across the Mediterranean is still scanty. Results are presented here from a study on the occurrence of eight Palaearctic-African migrants across the western and central Mediterranean based on ringing data collected during the Progetto Piccole Isole, a co-ordinated project based on standardized mist netting at 21 islands and coastal stations. The species were Melodious Warbler Hippolais polyglotta , Icterine Warbler Hippolais icterina, Bonelli's Warbler Phylloscopus bonelli , Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix , Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca , Collared Flycatcher Ficedula albicollis , Red-backed Shrike Lanius collurio and Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator . Their capture frequencies were expressed as the frequency of each species relative to the total number of migrants ringed at each station in order to correct for differences in capture effort between stations. For most species, the detailed, quantitative results confirmed the scanty information available so far, whereas in the case of Melodious Warbler and Bonelli's Warbler, evidence of undescribed and unexpected migration routes was found. These results suggest that standardized mist netting provides an important method for studying the migratory routes of small birds, in particular for those species which are not frequently ringed in their breeding and wintering grounds.  相似文献

1. A succession of 20 detrital layers was detected in five short cores from the Pallanza Basin in the western part of Lago Maggiore (Italy) by combining thin‐section analyses and high‐resolution micro‐X‐ray fluorescence (μ‐XRF) scanning techniques. The detrital layers range in thickness from 0.6 to 17.4 mm and appear most distinct in the upper 20–25 cm of each core, where eutrophication since the early 1960s resulted in the deposition of a dark, organic sediment matrix. 2. The age‐depth model of previously dated cores was transferred by precise intra‐basin correlation of distinct marker layers, thus providing a reliable chronology for the 20 detrital layers covering the time period 1965–2006. 3. All detrital layers are related to regional floods as recorded by short‐term lake level rises and peaks in discharge of the River Toce, the main tributary to the Pallanza Basin. 4. Detailed intra‐basin correlation of detrital layers allows us to distinguish river run‐off events from local erosion, as well as evaluate the relation between detrital layer thickness and flood amplitude. Massive clay accumulation on top of the thickest detrital layers might have affected lake ecology by attenuating light and influencing metabolic activity. 5. In the clastic‐dominated sediments deposited before 1965, detrital layers are less clearly discernible because of the predominantly clastic pelagic sediment matrix. The combination of thin‐section and μ‐XRF techniques, however, shows the potential to establish even longer flood layer time series from Lago Maggiore sediments.  相似文献

Considerable variation exists in parasite virulence and host tolerance which may have a genetic and/or environmental basis. In this article, we study the effects of a striking, mouth‐dwelling, blood‐feeding isopod parasite (Ceratothoa italica) on the life history and physiological condition of two Mediterranean populations of the coastal fish, Lithognathus mormyrus. The growth and hepatosomatic index (HSI) of fish in a heavily human‐exploited population were severely impacted by this parasite, whereas C. italica showed negligible virulence in fish close to a marine protected area. In particular, for HSI, the parasite load explained 34.4% of the variation in HSI in the exploited population, whereas there was no significant relationship (0.3%) between parasite load and HSI for fish in the marine protected area. Both host and parasite populations were not differentiated for neutral genetic variation and were likely to exchange migrants. We discuss the role of local genetic adaptation and phenotypic plasticity, and how deteriorated environmental conditions with significant fishing pressure can exacerbate the effects of parasitism. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 105 , 842–852.  相似文献

Outstanding progress in understanding segmentation of tracheate arthropods (Atelocerata), i.e. Chilopoda, Diplopoda, Pauropoda, Symphyla and Insecta, has been gained through experimental studies carried out on a single, very derivative organism, i.e. Drosophila. We stress the need for a broader comparative approach. We have studied the segmental structure of the trunk in geophilomorph centipedes, where we can identify morphogenetic units of two, four, eight or 16 segments. Accordingly, we sketch an improved model for arthropod segmentation, with the following initial steps: (a) biochemical marking of a very few repetitive units (eosegments); (b) iterative duplications of this first periodicity, until the embryo acquires an array of biochemical markings matching the whole number of segments of the future larva or juvenile specimen; (c) transpatterning, stabilization and interpretation of this 'segmental' arrangement; (d) possible repatterning, to give a final repetitive pattern we define as metasegmental. Finally, we express some doubt about the homology between annelid and arthropod segmentation.  相似文献
