Archean microfossils provide some of the earliest physical evidence for life on Earth, yet there remains a great deal of uncertainty regarding which micro‐organisms were actually preserved. Because of the limited cellular detail remaining, interpretation of those microfossils has been based solely on size and morphology. This has led to significant controversy surrounding the presence or absence of cyanobacteria as early as 3.5 billion years. Accordingly, there has been an experimental bias towards studying their silicification. Here we report the very first findings on thermophilic bacteria–silica interactions, and investigate how Sulfurihydrogenibium azorense, a representative of the Aquificales often found as prominent members of modern hot spring vent communities, interacts with highly siliceous hydrothermal fluids. We show that adsorption of silica is limited to silica polymers and colloids, and that the magnitude of silica adsorption is dependent on its chemolithoautotrophic pathway. Intriguingly, when S. azorense is grown as a H2‐oxidizer, it responds to increasing silica concentrations by producing a protein‐rich biofilm that may afford the cells protection against cell wall silicification. Although the biofilms of Aquificales could potentially contribute to or accelerate siliceous sinter formation under certain growth conditions, the cells themselves show a low preservation potential and are unlikely to have been preserved in the ancient rock record, despite phylogenetic analyses suggesting that they represent one of the most primordial life forms.  相似文献

Linking environmental computer simulation models and geographic information systems (GIS) is now a common practice to scale up simulations of complex ecosystem processes for decision support. Unfortunately, several important issues of upscaling using GIS are rarely considered; in particular scale dependency of models, availability of input data, support of input and validation data, and uncertainty in prediction including error propagation from the GIS. We linked the biogeochemical Forest‐DNDC model to a GIS database to predict growth of Eucalyptus globulus plantations at two different scales (~0.045 ha plot?1 scale and ~100 ha grid?1 scale) across Victoria, in south‐eastern Australia. Results showed that Forest‐DNDC was not scale dependent across the range of scales investigated. Reduced availability of input data at the larger scale may introduce severe prediction errors, but did not require adjustment of the model in this study. Differences in the support of input and validation data led to an underestimation of predictive precision but an overestimation of prediction accuracy. Increasing data support, produced a high level of prediction accuracy (?e%), but a medium level of predictive precision (r2=0.474, ME=0.318) after statistical validation. GIS error contribution could be detected but was not readily or reliably quantified. In a regional case study for 2653 ha of E. globulus plantations, the linked model GIS system estimated a total standing biomass of 95 260 t C for mid‐2003 and a net CO2 balance of ?45 671 t CO2‐C yr?1 for the entire year of 2002. This study showed that regional predictions of forest growth and carbon sequestration can be produced with greater confidence after a comprehensive assessment of upscaling issues.  相似文献

Our claim in this paper is that not being identified as the data source might cause harm to a person or group. Therefore, in some cases the default of anonymisation should be replaced by a careful deliberation, together with research subjects, of how to handle the issues of identification and confidentiality. Our prime example in this article is community participatory research and similar endeavours on indigenous groups. The theme, content and aim of the research, and the question of how to handle property rights and ownership of research results, as well as who should be in charge of the research process, including the process of creating anonymity, should all be answered, before anonymity is accepted.  相似文献

Interactions between saprotrophic and ectomycorrhizal fungi have been largely ignored, although their mycelia often share the same microsites. The mycelial systems show general similarity to each other and, although the enzymatic potential of the saprotrophic fungi is generally considered to be higher, the importance of organic nutrient sources to ectomycorrhizal fungi is now widely accepted. In the experiments described here, nutritional interactions involving transfer of elements from one mycelium to the other have been monitored dynamically using radioactive tracers and a non-destructive electronic autoradiography system. Microcosms were used in which mycelial systems of the ectomycorrhizal fungi Suillus variegatus and Paxillus involutus , extending from Pinus sylvestris host plants, were confronted with mycelia of the saprotroph Hypholoma fasciculare extending from wood blocks. The fungi showed a clear morphological confrontation response. The mycorrhizal mycelium often formed dense patches over the Hypholoma mycelia. Up to 25% of the 32P present in the Hypholoma mycelium was captured by the mycorrhizal fungi and translocated to the plant host within 30 d. The transfer of 32P to the saprotroph from labelled mycorrhizal mycelium was one to two orders of magnitude lower. The significance of this transfer as a 'short cut' in nutrient cycling is discussed.  相似文献

Quantitative genetic variation was assessed in a population of Crepis tectorum subsp. pumila , a winter annual confined to calcareous grassland on the Baltic island of öland (SE Sweden). Plants from 40 maternal sibships were grown in a greenhouse and scored for a large number of traits representing all stages of the life cycle. The study included several characters that have been subject to ecotypic differentiation as well as traits known to be under current selection. Highly significant family differences were found for all but one character, suggesting that past selection was too weak to eliminate the genetic variability of characters presumed to be adaptive and there is a potential for further adaptive change in most traits. Two additional traits treated as qualitative were also found to differ significantly among families. A parallel cultivation experiment showed that the extent of population divergence in a quantitative trait was positively correlated with the amount of inter- family variation, implying stability of the relative variability for substantial periods of time, a possible reflection of phenotypic constraints being expressed both within and between populations. Additional data indicated that genetic trade-offs among traits under simultaneous selection, year-to- year variation in selection in combination with a long-lived seed bank, and genotype × environment interactions, could prevent the erosion of genetic variability in some characters connected with fitness.  相似文献

Abundant well-preserved shelly fossils of Sinotubulites occur in the upper part of the late Neoproterozoic Dengying Formation in Ningqiang County, Shaanxi Province, China. Unlike 'funnel-in-funnel' structures of co-occurring Cloudina shells, the tube of Sinotubulites is nearly cylindrical, composed of several thin layers and characterized by 'tube-in-tube' structure. The tube bears prominent longitudinal sculptures and/or irregular annulations, which were formed by the wrinkles of tube layers, and weaken gradually towards the inner layers. The irregular wrinkle ornament of the outer layer shows plastic feature of the Sinotubulites tubes, which may further imply that the organisms secrete the elastic and flexible organic-dominated walls with mineralization, possibly aragonitic. Detailed thin section and SEM studies indicate that the silicification occurred earlier than phosphatation. Specimens preserved in situ from Hubei and surface ornamentation and polygonal shape of the cross-section suggest that Sinotubulites probably lived as an epibenthos lying on the sea floor.     Aragonitic tube, Ediacaran, Shaanxi. Abstract.Ants of the genus Acanthognathus stalk small insects and catch their prey by a strike with their long, thin mandibles. The mandibles close in less than 2.5 ms and this movement is controlled by a specialized closer muscle. In Acanthognathus , unlike other insects, the mandible closer muscle is subdivided into two distinct parts: as in a catapult, a large slow closer muscle contracts in advance and provides the power for the strike while the mandibles are locked open. When the prey touches specialized trigger hairs, a small fast closer muscle rapidly unlocks the mandibles and thus releases the strike. The fast movement is steadied by large specialized surfaces in the mandible joint and the sensory‐motor reflex is controlled by neurones with particularly large, and thus fast‐conducting, axons.  相似文献

The aim of the present work was to investigate the relationship between canalization and developmental stability under varying environmental conditions. Three different cohorts of Mastomys natalensis (Rodentia, Muridae), displaying different growth trajectories, were analysed by means of geometric morphometrics. A set of 23 landmarks was digitalized on the dorsal skull of 292 specimens from Morogoro (Tanzania). Patterns of among‐ and within‐individual (measured as fluctuating asymmetry, FA) variation were assessed and compared among and within the three groups to test for the presence of a common mechanism between canalization and developmental stability. Results showed that there was no congruence between canalization and developmental stability: (1) levels of FA and among‐individual variation varied in a discordant fashion, (2) no correspondence between the variance–covariance matrix of among‐ and within individual variation was found, and (3) environmental effects were able to alter the covariance structure of among‐individual variation leaving patterns associated with fluctuating asymmetry unaffected.
