This paper examines the effects of age at marriage and differential mortality of males and females on the incidence of widowhood between the sexes. Abridged life tables constructed from marital status and death registration data of a rural area of Bangladesh for the period 1974-79 were used. The difference in life expectancy between males and females varies from 0.4 to 2.2 years at the ages 0 to 65 years and over. The mortality differentials show that the probabilities of a male or a female surviving the other spouse would be approximately the same, were there no other influence. But the incidence of widows is about ten times that of widowers. Other relevant factors, under a given regime of mortality, are age at marriage and age difference between husband and wife.  相似文献

Oligonucleotides containing 7-deaza-2′-deoxyxanthosine (1) and 2′-deoxyxanthosine (2) were prepared. The 2-(4-nitrophenyl)ethyl group is applicable for 7-deazaxanthine protection that is removed with DBU by β-elimination, while the deprotection of the allyl residue with Pd (0) catalyst failed. Contrarily, the allyl group was found to be an excellent protecting group for 2′-deoxyxanthosine (2). The base pairing of nucleosides 1 and 2 with the four canonical DNA constituents as well as with 3 within the 12-mer duplexes is studied.  相似文献

A series of novel pyrazole integrated benzophenones (9aj) have been designed, synthesized from 1-methyl-5-(2,4,6-trimethoxy-phenyl)-1H-pyrazole 6. The structures of the regioisomers 6 and 7 were determined by 2D 1H–1H COSY, 1H–13C HSQC and 1H–13C HMBC experiments. The newly synthesized compounds (9aj) were evaluated for in vivo anti-inflammatory activity by carrageenan paw edema in rats and in vitro COX-1/COX-2 inhibition and antioxidant potential. Among the synthesized compounds, compounds 9b, 9d and 9f, were found to be active anti-inflammatory agents in addition to having potent antioxidant activity.  相似文献

Using monolayers of intestinal cells, we reported that upregulation of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) is required for oxidative injury and that activation of NF-B is key to cytoskeletal instability. In the present study, we hypothesized that NF-B activation is crucial to oxidant-induced iNOS upregulation and its injurious consequences: cytoskeletal oxidation and nitration and monolayer dysfunction. Wild-type (WT) cells were pretreated with inhibitors of NF-B, with or without exposure to oxidant (H2O2). Other cells were transfected with an IB mutant (an inhibitor of NF-B). Relative to WT cells exposed to vehicle, oxidant exposure caused increases in IB instability, NF-B subunit activation, iNOS-related activity (NO, oxidative stress, tubulin nitration), microtubule disassembly and instability (increased monomeric and decreased polymeric tubulin), and monolayer disruption. Monolayers pretreated with NF-B inhibitors (MG-132, lactacystin) were protected against oxidation, showing decreases in all measures of the NF-B iNOS NO pathway. Dominant mutant stabilization of IB to inactivate NF-B suppressed all measures of the iNOS/NO upregulation while protecting monolayers against oxidant insult. In these mutants, we found prevention of tubulin nitration and oxidation and enhancement of cytoskeletal and monolayer stability. We concluded that 1) NF-B is required for oxidant-induced iNOS upregulation and for the consequent nitration and oxidation of cytoskeleton; 2) NF-B activation causes cytoskeletal injury following upregulation of NO-driven processes; and 3) the molecular event underlying the destabilizing effects of NF-B appears to be increases in carbonylation and nitrotyrosination of the subunit components of cytoskeleton. Babesiosis is a parasitic infection due to the multiplication of tick borne parasite, Babesia sp., in erythrocytes of host, which includes a wide variety of vertebrates including small ruminants causing decreased livestock output and hence economic losses. The objective of the present study was to establish a PCR based method for the detection of Babesia sp. in small ruminant population in Southern Punjab and to determine the risk factors involve in the spread of babesiosis. A total of 107 blood samples were collected from 40 sheep and 67 goats in seven districts of Southern Punjab from randomly selected herds. Data on the characteristics of the animals and the herd were collected through questionnaires. 36 blood samples (34% of total) produced the DNA fragment specific for 18S rRNA gene of Babesia sp., by PCR amplification, of which 20 were sheep and 16 were goats. Samples from all seven district contained Babesia positive samples and prevalence varied between 18 to 68%. It was observed that male animals (P = 0.009) and young animals under one year of age (P = 0.01) were more prone to the parasite. It was observed that herds consist of more than 15 animals (P = 0.007), composed of mixed species of small ruminants (P = 0.022), associated with dogs (P = 0.003) and dogs having ticks on their bodies (P = 0.011) were among the major risk factors for the spread of babesiosis in small ruminants.  相似文献

The use of the antiplatelet agents abciximab and clopidogrel is now accepted therapy in percutaneous coronary intervention. We present a case in which these agents were used in a patient with idiopathic thrombocytopaenic purpura and a platelet count of 40x10(9)/l undergoing primary multivessel coronary stenting. This case shows that unstable coronary syndromes can occur in patients with thrombocytopaenia and that antiplatelet agents may be used safely in this context.  相似文献

A new series of 4-({[2, 4-dioxo-2H-chromen-3 (4H)-ylidene] methyl} amino) sulfonamides have been obtained by the condensation reaction of 4-hydroxycoumarin with various sulfonamides (sulfanilamide, sulfaguanidine, p-aminomethyl-sufanilamide, p-aminoethylsufanilamide, sulfathiazole, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine and 4-[(2-amino-4-pyrimidinyl) amino] benzenesulfonamide) in the presence of an excess of ethylorthoformate. These compounds were screened for their in-vitro antibacterial activity against four Gram-negative (E. coli, S. flexneri, P. aeruginosa and S. typhi) and two Gram-positive (B. subtilis and S. aureus) bacterial strains and for in-vitro antifungal activity against T. longifusus, C. albicans, A. flavus, M. canis, F. solani and C. glaberata. Results revealed that a significant antibacterial activity was observed by compounds (4) and (5), (6) and (8) against two Gram-negative, (P. aeruginosa and S. typhi) and two Gram-positive (B. subtilis and S. aureus) species, respectively. Of these (4) was found to be the most active. Similarly, for antifungal activity compounds (3) and (8) showed significant activity against M. canis and, (6) and (8) against F. solani. The brine shrimp bioassay was also carried out to study their in-vitro cytotoxic properties and only two compounds, (4) and (8) possessing LD50 = 2.9072 x 10(-4) and 3.2844 x 10(-4) M, respectively, displayed potent cytotoxic activity against Artemia salina  相似文献

Tetraketones: a new class of tyrosinase inhibitors   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Twenty-eight tetraketones (1-28) with variable substituents at C-7 were synthesized and evaluated as tyrosinase inhibitors. Remarkably compounds 25 (IC(50)=2.06 microM), 11 (IC(50)=2.09 microM), 15 (IC(50)=2.61 microM), and 27 (IC(50)=3.19 microM) were found to be the most active compounds of the series, even better than both standards kojic acid (IC(50)=16.67 microM) and L-mimosine (IC(50)=3.68 microM). This study may lead to the discovery of therapeutically potent agents against clinically very important dermatological disorders including hyperpigmentation as well as skin melanoma.  相似文献

Reference bias refers to a common problem in fitting experimental data to an initial model. Given enough free parameters, a good fit of any experimental data to the model can be obtained, even if the experimental data contain only noise. Reference-based alignment methods used in electron microscopy (EM) are subject to this type of bias, in that images containing pure noise can regenerate the reference. Cross-validation is based on the idea that the experimental data used to assess the validity of the fitting should not be the same data as were used to do the fitting. Here we present the application of cross-validation to one form of reference-based alignment: 3D-projection matching in single-particle reconstructions. Our results show that reference bias is indeed present in reconstructions, but that the effect is small for real data compared to that for random noise, and that this difference in behavior is magnified, rather than diminished, during iterative refinement.  相似文献
